What actor/actress would you like to see in new Star Wars Movies?
Time

This fiendishly clever 'Doctor Who/Star Wars' mashup got posted over on FE.org recently and it struck me how Karen Gillan almost looks like a young Carrie Fisher at around the 02.12 mark in the clip (The hair, the Endor background and of course the Lightsaber all help).

https://vimeo.com/86788097

Karen as Leia's daughter would be a great casting choice IMO.

^ Even found a photo of her with the ROTJ hair.

I don't think Lucas would have mishandled him. ANYTHING other than looking awesome, flipping, killing and dying would have ruined him.

I think he looked like he was wearing 'MC Hammer' style pantaloons and flipped around like he was an acrobat in a circus.

^ Darth Maul on his first summer job before he got the tatts.

The only thing that was cool about Maul was the voice and there was precious little of that in TPM. There was probably more in the TV spots and trailers than in the actual film. I'd have liked Dooku to have been in all 3 which would have at least given the PT some kind of symmetry and emotional resonance.

Tony Benn MP 1925-2014

The last of a kind, a noble politician, a giant. I was lucky enough to have attended a lecture he gave 10 years ago at a local church arguing against the Iraq war. He had ideas, conviction and empathy, if only the rest of today's political class had all or any of these three.

I think this deserves to be repeated. Let's not let reality get too far in the way of entertainment. I want to watch ESB:R and say, "YEAAAHHH!" not, "Those speeder flaps are conforming to the laws of physics perfectly." This is art and entertainment, not a documentary.

Totally, all the flashes and bangs and what not are what give the OT it's exhileration. I also like when ANH just cuts to white frames. I don't care what the EU explanation is for them being there.

But I still contend that that particular flash was a mistake and not a deliberate visual flourish like all the rest. Like I said earlier, I haven't come to that conclusion recently, 5-10 year old me in the 80s thought it stood out as an error, even on a blurry and worn-out 4:3 hometaped VHS.

Everyone who downloaded Harmy's latest or who downloads the upcoming ESB:R should own it.  I got someone to give it to me as a gift. ;-)

 Agreed.

I got my copy 2nd hand and if you can get the Blu-Rays at a discount they are worth it for some of the extras. The bonus disc has a number of great documentaries and featurettes about the OT and getting "all" the deleted scenes from the OT was worth the purchase alone for me. However, the PT extras are sh*te, they really are the dregs of what was left over from the stuffed DVD releases (Including scenes so unfinished you'd be ashamed to call them 'animatics').

Yes there are Flak-like light flashes and impacts all over the place in the OT. While I can believe that a Stardestroyer, the Death Star or an AT-AT might be armed with flak-cannons to shoot down smaller ships (That's what flak is for) I'm not sure I buy a small Snowspeeder being armed with flak-cannons. Why would a fighter be armed with two anti-aircraft weapons?

So I still suspect that flash is just too high due to a mistake with the compositing. But if it doesn't bother anyone else and more importantly if it doesn't bother you Adywan, then it doesn't really matter.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Going to an Indie Cinema is my preference.

They attract a better class of person than the multiplexes, people who respect the cinema, the film and their other cinema-goers. They're often cheaper, have better films, better snacks and if you're lucky some quality Ales on tap. Or on the other end of the scale, a gigantic iMax screen is often trouble free as the steep price of the ticket seems concentrate the minds of the viewers somewhat.

I shall be trying to book early for the latter where EpVII is concerned. Although funnily enough I hope my first screening of EpVII is packed to the rafters with loud cheering and boistrous fans (Some dressed in costumes and waving Lightsabers above their heads) just like there was for the SE Trilogy and EpI (EpII and EpIII just got silence). Let's face it I'm gonna go see it more than once, so I can go to a quiet screening the 2nd or 3rd or 4th or...

Alamo Drafthouse is the only place I'll see movies anymore.  Strict no talking or you're booted, no children, bottomless popcorn, plus wine at your seat.  Perfect.  I've been four times already this year.

Sounds like a horrible place to see movies, despite the awesome strict policies. It's all for nought if there are waiters buzzing around all the time serving food and drinks while you're trying to watch a film. I can't imagine anything more distracting.

At least you know that's what you are paying for, I've never once paid extra to have the experience of having to tell other people to shut up.

NEW SPEEDER FLAPS

 Simply stunning work Adywan! :-D

This has probably been asked (And answered before) but even as a kid this shot always bugged me a little (Awesome panel readouts btw!)...

...because the impact flash has been composited about 10 foot higher than the top of the AT-AT. In my mind I always put it down to the shot impacting off the (Invisible) shields. But does an AT-AT have shields? I know armour is mentioned but are shields? Not a huge issue in any case.

To make it a little clearer for anybody wondering here are the 10 frames of the shot and impact (Taken from Harmy's DE)...

Portable Deus Ex Game: The Fall on sale for $1 on Android and Apple.

Thanks for the tip (It's £4.99 for UK Deus Ex fans btw). It looks almost as good as the full game. I might wait a bit and see if it gets ported to the PS3 (Like they did for one of the MGS titles) because it looks like it will suck to play on a touch screen.

I'd rather they spent the time developing more DLC for the actual game because the 'Missing Link' mini-game was freakin' awesome. Playing that whole thing through on the hardest settings with no weapons and no upgrades takes pure dedication but a lot of fun.

Nicholas is still alive. He was brilliant in Mr Jolly Lives Next Door.

Very much so, I was listening to him on the wireless while I had lunch today, but he only acts once in blue moon. On the strength of Fenric he should do more... age permitting.

I watched all the Comic Strips ages ago, so I must have seen Mr Jolly but can't remember a thing about it. Should probably refresh my memory one day soon.

Watched a few more serials in the past fortnight...

Robot (Tom Baker) - Obviously the main thrill of this show was seeing Tom Baker's version of the Doctor come into vibrant being. At one point he hilariously has a sulk, uttering the line "Well, of course I'm being childish! There's no point being grown-up if you can't be childish sometimes!" which echoed the Jon Pertwee line "What's wrong with being childish? I like being childish!" that I liked from 'Terror of the Autons'.

It's one of those serials that starts off well but falls apart somewhat in the second half. A great story about a peaceful Robot being forced against it's programming to perform wicked deeds by a cabal of fascistic scientists was very interesting. But then this all gets thrown out the window when the chance for some silly plot twists come along. So the benevolent creator of the Robot suddenly turns out to be evil in episode 3 then just as suddenly turns out to good again in episode 4. Quite why an evil Doctor would create a good Robot but then force it to do evil things against it's nature is beyond explanation. Plus the final episode's 'King Kong' pastiche is fairly clunking. Yet overall depite the flaws, I enjoyed it a lot and it's sad that some of the wonderful people interviewed on the DVD have since died (some quite recently).

The Mutants (Jon Pertwee) - The writing and production values of this 6-parter where terrific. It also has plenty for the dual Star Wars/Doctor Who fan to enjoy as two of the main characters are played by Lobot (John Hollis) and Biggs (Garrick Hagon), both giving superb performances. I wonder if Lucas saw these 1972 performances long before he cast them in ANH and ESB.

Especially as much of the episode revolves around a suspiciously 'Death Star' like orbitting space station with the power to lay waste to the planet below...

It's also tempting to see R2 and C3PO as less inspired by Kurosawa's 'The Hidden Fortress' and more by Cotton and Stubbs (LOL). The political tones come thick and heavy with the end of the British Colonial Empire and South-African Apartheid both transposed brilliantly to the far flung future. Unlike a few Pertwee 6-parters I've watched of late, the whole enterprise doesn't unravel in the last episode. The twisting, turning plot builds and builds and all wraps up in the end.

Curse of Fenric (Slyvester McCoy) - Being from the final season of classic era Who it's surprise on re-viewing how close this serial was to how the show returned. Ace the Doctor's companion takes a central part in the plot (Like Rose or Amy) and easter-egg like elements from other episodes all come together in the finale (Think Badwolf). Also great that the writers take the Doctor to a very dark place we rarely see. This ruthless take on the Doctor was nicely developed over the course of the last two seasons so it's a real shame we didn't see more of it.

It was a good choice to set the serial in a 'Bletchley Park' like millitary base, as it gives The Doctor and Ace the chance to make casual refrences to modern computers, illiciting astonishment from the code breakers of the time. Nicholas Parsons (More known now for his wonderful hosting of radio panel game 'Just A Minute') steals the show as a Vicar who has lost his faith after the horrors of war. It's a shame Nicholas didn't do more acting as he's just fantastic.
