Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

And for some Disney examples:

  • The Incredible Hulk which was owned by Universal but was on the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One box set by Disney.
  • Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro which was licensed for North American release by Discotek/Eastern Star Media but was on The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki box set by Disney.

For the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One box set, the Paramount distributed ones were copyrighted under Marvel and immediately went to Disney after they released The Avengers: the last Phase One movie. This may happen again in case they make a Phase Three box set where they most likely will include Spider-Man: Homecoming.

And for The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki box set (US release only), Disney licensed all the other Hayao Miyazaki films for release in North America.
And Studio Ghibli has the home video distribution copyrights for all of the Hayao Miyazaki films in Japan, and Walt Disney Japan is Studio Ghibli’s official home video distributor in Japan, so there are no problems over there.
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro was also included in both UK and Australian releases since StudioCanal in UK and Madman Entertainment in Australia own the distribution copyrights to both Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro and the other Hayao Miyazaki films in their respective countries.
The only problem is in Hong Kong where Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro wasn’t included in the box set because IVL, the official Hong Kong distributor for all the Studio Ghibli films, never got the distribution copyrights to Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro nor was it licensed by another company, leaving it without an official release in Hong Kong at all.
Pretty ironic since the Studio Ghibli films are quite popular in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China.
Bootlegs of that movie with Chinese subtitles are still quite common in Hong Kong given how much the Chinese love Studio Ghibli films.

I found a better source for the 2020 figure… Disney’s official SEC filings for Q4 FY2013:

https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1001039/000100103913000164/fy2013_q4x10k.htm

“Prior to the Company’s acquisition, Lucasfilm produced six Star Wars films (Episodes 1 through 6). Lucasfilm retained the rights to consumer products related to all of the films and the rights related to television and electronic distribution formats for all of the films, with the exception of the rights for Episode 4, which are owned by a third-party studio. All of the films are distributed by a third-party studio in the theatrical and home video markets. The theatrical and home video distribution rights for these films revert back to Lucasfilm in May 2020 with the exception of Episode 4, for which these distribution rights are retained in perpetuity by the third-party studio.”

Well, THAT’S definitive. I’m sure Disney will work out something to include IV with any movie set, but I’m sure the accountants will want to wait until May 2020 to ONLY worry about IV.

Disney will never release Star Wars individually, even if the rest of the Saga and/or Original Trilogy will be released by Disney.

Fox will probably release Star Wars and maybe it will have matching artwork but Disney won’t do it.

Disney can, however, include Star Wars with the rest of the Saga and/or Original Trilogy in a box set as long as they have permission from Fox.

Disney already did it with The Incredible Hulk (Universal) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One box set and with Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (Eastern Star Media/Discotek) in The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki box set and they had permission from the companies that distributed the respective films from their respective box sets as well as the fact that Disney owns every other movie in said box sets.

In The Incredible Hulk, Disney didn’t author a new disc, they just recycled the same content from Universal’s disc.

Though with Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, they did author a new disc just so it will have the same menu style as the other Studio Ghibli Blu-rays by Disney and so it won’t have bonus features like the other movies in the Hayao Miyazaki box set.
They also used a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 version of the remastered audio mix from the 2014 Japanese remastered theatrical reissue which was only in a lossy form in the US standalone and Japanese Blu-rays.
And they also upmixed the Streamline dub to 5.1 for their box set but they only duplicated the mono channel in all of the speakers.

So maybe the Star Wars Blu-ray by Fox can be also authored similarly to the other movies.

With Disney suddenly going all out with 3D, it’s kinda ironic that The BFG didn’t have a 3D release in the US. Nor did Alice Through the Looking Glass, even if both movies had 3D versions in other countries.

What’s even weirder is that Frozen and Big Hero 6 never had 3D versions in the US while they did in other countries and none of them had re-releases unlike The Force Awakens or The Jungle Book Remake, I think a 3D Collector’s Edition re-release of Frozen in the US would sell like pancakes for Disney.

First of all I would like to thank you for the fantastic work you do. I have had access to the MKV of the movies. Yesterday I can enjoy with my children a movie session as the original trilogy deserved. Unfortunately I do not have access (although I have already requested) to the torker torrent and to be able to download this fabulous work that you have done with all the menus and extras that the versions deserve.

I hope that some Administrator hear my requests and give me access to Myspleen since I have a good machine and a good internet line to share this fabulous work.

Many thanks for everything

These look great, reminds me of some of the horizontal boxes for the Super Famicom games which I had as a kid (I did not understand some of the text back then because I didn’t learn Japanese yet but I loved playing them, even without being fluent in Japanese). Some games which had vertical boxes like Super Mario World, Mega Man X1-4 and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and some were horizontal like the Final Fantasy games, Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia.

What cases are they for?

And speaking of the Super Famicom and horizontal covers, I think a cover series inspired by the boxes of the Super Star Wars Trilogy on the SNES would be really cool.

Glad you like them - I’m surprised we haven’t seen more landscape’ style covers like Ell the Ewoks - I think they are kind of different and look fun. I don’t think they were for a specific set - which is also kind of nice when you can easily use covers for various sets 😃

To see a Famicom/SNES-based dvd cover of the Super Star Wars trilogy would be cool. Is this what you are thinking of?:-

Yes. But I’m thinking some of the logos and text would have to be altered if we were to make a DVD/Blu-ray cover.

And while I usually prefer Japanese cover art for most retro games, I think this kind of cover should be based on the US or Europe boxes since the Japanese box was vertical.

If you need to cure your 5.1 fix, on the 'spleen there are audio files for the Star Wars Original Trilogy (aka. GOUT) that uses the rarely heard 1997 Special Edition sound mix made from the original CinemaDTS CD-ROM discs. Of course, portions of the audio include the sound mix from the GOUT to patch over footages where the 1997 SE audio would be out-of-place.

Just mux these to the MKV video and you are good to go.

is the music score quieter than the SFX during the death star attack? i dont recall if that change happened in 97 or 2004/2011

I think that happened in the 2004 version.

I listened to the 2011 version once and I think it wasn’t there.

I think the 1997 mix is the best for the original star wars though. It sounds really good.

Agreed. SE changes aside, the 97 mixes were very good. They didn’t start really mucking things up in general until 2004. Same with the colors.

Indeed. For my personal a new hope I used the 97 mix and just used the pcm 93 mix to patch over se nonsense.

But empire strikes backs theatrical audio mix doesn’t have the sound quality problems that anh’s does so that’ll make it easier.

Actually I prefer dolby surround over dolby digital as a format anyway. More versatile. Want surround effects? Got it. Don’t have surround? No problem still sounds good in stereo. Less bitrate required to sound good, or you can have the same bit rate and have very little compression artifacts.

Yes, the 2.0 surround DTS Stereo mixes for the Studio Ghibli films are really versatile.

And Studio Ghibli retained the audio in DTS Stereo instead of making it 5.1 or 7.1 for movies theatrically presented in Dolby Stereo to retain the theatrical soundtrack as much as possible is just pure genius.

Regarding other dubs, the official Hong Kong DVDs and Blu-rays definitely don’t have a Cantonese dub (we have them; they don’t), I think Blu-ray.com just has some bad data on the Blu. There may very well be a Cantonese dub for television (lots of languages have these, not just Tagalog), and knowing how common bootlegs are over there, there may be a very official-looking DVD with the Cantonese dub that you can buy in Hong Kong, just not the kind you can buy in regular stores in the US. If you find that or the Tagalog dub, I’d love to hear them. I don’t care much if they’re well-done, they’re for accessibility–some of our other dubs are… interesting… too. If there’s one person out there who doesn’t know English very well, but knows Tagalog, that’s enough reason to have it.

I checked, the “bad info” about the Hong Kong Blu-ray having Cantonese-dubbed versions is actually true from a certain point of view.

The set includes the Prequel Trilogy alongside the Original Trilogy but only the prequels have Cantonese dubs.

Move along. We’re not discussing the Prequel Trilogy translations here.

What is the difference between the 5.1 1980 mix and the 2.0 1980 mix? Are there any content differences, or are they just mixed through more channels?

Also, does the 16mm mono track differ from those two in any way?

IIRC, the 5.1 1980 mix is just the matrixed stereo upmixed to 5.1, with some of the LFE channel from other sources like the Blu-rays where they still seem decent. In other words, it’s a nice, tasteful upmix of the stereo mix. Unlike Star Wars, it is NOT an attempt to reproduce the original six-channel mix. And unlike Jedi, we know that there are content differences from the six-channel mix, but the six-channel mix didn’t apply to this cut of the film. So no content differences, just more channels, technically not theatrical but not actively revisionist in any way.

The 16mm track is way different. C-3PO gets some different lines (ones that later showed up in the Special Editions), and the mixing is occasionally a bit different too.

So in other words the 5.1 is just stereo? It does sound amazing but just interested as i thought it was a pure 5.1 source. Is there any interest in obtaining a true 5.1 source or using the 6.1 source from the blu rays etc?

  • Rev

No, it’s an upmix of matrixed stereo, not plain stereo, which gives you 4 distinct channels. Mix in the LFE and it’s true 4.1, upmixed to 5.1. The channels aren’t as distinct as a modern discrete mix but they’re distinct enough. However, it is just the stereo mix, i.e. sound effects and dialogue specific to the stereo mix. No content from the original mono or six-channel mixes.

The point of the 1980 six-channel mix is to be authentic yet multichannel. You could certainly get more channels from the Blu-ray, but you’d lose everything else–quality, authenticity, etc. 4.1/5.1 is about as good as you can expect in this regards when the cadillac best-of-breed audio in 1980 was 4.2. The only thing theoretically better would be a preservation of the 70mm version of the video with accompanying six-channel audio, but that’s unlikely–and frankly I don’t like the 70mm cut as well, so what we have now is still better, IMO.

alexp120 said:

It is possible to insert 6.1 sound from the Blu Ray to the Despecialized edition, however the Blu Ray is the special edition cut with added shots not seen in the Despecialized edition.

Also the audio quality on the Blu-rays is fairly tragic, so if you can find a nice, alternative lossless source (which we have), you’ll end up with considerably better results than anything using the Blu-rays as a significant source. You’re not going to improve anything by pulling in audio from an inferior source, regardless of the nominal channels.

Excuse me, but how do I convert the raw .wav files of the 1993 mixes from schorman’s collection to DTS-HD Master Audio?

I am planning on doing a separate MKA with lossless 1993 mixes since Harmy only added the 1993 mixes in lossy Dolby Digital format.

I know the 1993 mixes aren’t theatrical mixes but I am partial to them since they were the most polished pre-1997 mixes IMO and are my favorite.
