International Audio (including Voice-Over Translations)
Time

Can someone please send me audio files for GOUT-synced (4K83 for ROTJ) Japanese dubs.
And SW and ESB each had two Japanese dubs: a theatrical dub and a home video dub while ROTJ only has a home video dub, both dubs are on the Japanese GOUT.
I only have a Complete Saga Blu-ray from Japan and I am planning on making my own custom Blu-rays for the TN1 4K Trilogy that will match my retail Japanese Blu-rays.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)

I hope the 5.1ch mix for TESB will have a 70mm version which will contain the changes which were on the 70mm mix like Luke saying “You were lucky to get out of there” instead of “You’re lucky you didn’t taste very good” among other things.

Those weren’t part of the 70mm mix. We have in-theater audio recordings of the 70mm mix to prove it, which also prove that the ending sequence was cut differently, meaning you couldn’t make a true 70mm mix restoration and just include it as a separate audio track; you’d need to alter the video as well.

Okay. But my point is, I think a rough approximation of the 70mm mix but synced to the 35mm cut would be great for 4K80 and Harmy’s Despecialized.
It would be nigh-impossible to restore the 70mm cut unless we find a full 70mm print.

I want a rough recreation of the 70mm mix but synced to the GOUT (or 4K80 when it comes out and the sync is different lie in 4K83).
For people who prefer the original 35mm mix, keep a “Purist” 5.1ch mix as well.

It would be great for the trilogy so that the 5.1 mixes recreate the 70mm 6-track mixes.
SW and ROTJ are pretty much 5.1 versions of the Dolby Stereo mixes while TESB will be different, just like the actual 70mm mixes.

I do have a soft spot in my heart for the mono mixes, though.

Movies in UAR - opinions needed
Time

I think some of the Winnie the Pooh films would benefit from this.
The DMC (Disney Movie Club) exclusive Blu-ray release is in it’s original production aspect ratio of 1:66:1 but it loses some of the sides in the Blu-ray version compared to the iTunes version which is cropped to 1:78:1, even if some detail on the top and bottom is lost on iTunes.
Meanwhile, the DVD has the most information on the top, bottom and sides.

I think a UAR version of Piglet’s Big Movie with the iTunes version on the top, bottom and sides applied on the Blu-ray image would be great. With the DVD version applied to parts of the image which the iTunes and Blu-ray versions don’t show.
But I think it would just be an open-matte edit.

There is also Pooh’s Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin.
It’s on a 1:66:1 aspect ratio on the US DVD, Blu-ray and iTunes (weird, since for most of the other Winnie the Pooh iTunes releases, they are cropped to 1:78:1, so the iTunes release may just be the HD master for the US DVD release).
And the framing is different on both the iTunes and Blu-ray versions, with the iTunes version showing parts of the image that aren’t on the Blu-ray while cutting some parts of the image which were present on the Blu-ray, in both horizontal and vertical axes.

There are also the European and Asian DVDs, which are in 1:33:1 fullscreen.
They cut off part of the sides but are also open matte and show more of the top and bottom.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to locate a comparison of the Asian DVD, US DVD, iTunes and Blu-ray all together.

However, I think we should combine the Blu-ray and iTunes for the widescreen part (maybe utilizing the US DVD, since it may have more image) with the European/Asian DVD filling up what’s lost in the Blu-ray and iTunes versions.

Here are some screenshot comparisons:
http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=307016 Piglet’s Big Movie
http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=307015&page=4 Pooh’s Grand Adventure (Blu-ray vs. iTunes)
https://www.dvdizzy.com/poohsgrandadventure.html Pooh’s Grand Adventure (Widescreen vs. Fullscreen)

As for colour, I know the Blu-rays have more saturated and bright colours more in line with The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and the Blu-ray release of The Tigger Movie.
But I personally prefer the Blu-ray colours, since the detail pops out more (and I personally think the iTunes and DVD releases of Pooh’s Grand Adventure looks like it has a purple tint).
Just give fans an option between the Blu-ray colour palette or the original iTunes/DVD colour palette.

New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Preservation Project (* unfinished - lots of info *)
Time

This bootleg looks like a conversion of those Russian WEB-DL torrents.
And there’s a chance the quality could be worse, since Blu-ray can’t support 1080p 25fps, Blu-ray can only support 25fps in 720p or 23.976fps 1080p.
So either he’s lying and it’s actually downscaled to 720p, it’s we get missing frames with converting 25fps to 23.976fps by removing some frames, or it’s actually a proper 25fps to 23.976fps correction.

Either way, I really can’t see how the quality would be that different from the Russian WEB-DL torrents.

There Is A YouTube Video That Was In 60FPS and it was The Star Wars Holiday Special.

Cool, that’s probably the best the Holiday Special would look on an HD display.

That’s the Editdroid version from few years back. It was the master tape, not “recorded” like the uploader suggests.

No, I was referring to how it looks great (but not much, considering it’s the Holiday Special) because of the 60fps deinterlacing.

The Spongebob Squarepants Movie - 35mm Re Creation (a WIP)
Time

I love the premise behind this project.

Reminds me of how Studio Ghibli’s digital productions are filtered for Blu-ray to look more like they’re made on film.
With subtle film grain, softness and even gate weave.
Though, I do like that even when they are filtered, the grain is still more subtle than actual 35mm prints or actual 35mm productions.

I love the appearance.

I really wish that your re-creation of The SpongeBob SquarePants movie would look more similar to Studio Ghibli’s approach instead of the grain of an actual 35mm print.

Ghibli’s approach is cleaner and it isn’t as overly filtered, but it still looks really nice and film-like.
Truly the best of both worlds.

Info: Recommended Editions of Disney Animated (and Partially Animated) Features
Time

I wish they would just release them with two aspect ratios on the Blu-ray, with a 16:9 1.78:1 theatrical format version and a 4:3 1:33:1 open-matte version.

The Black Cauldron, however, should be released in a 2:20:1 aspect ratio rather than the slightly cropped 2:35:1 aspect ratio it has on iTunes.

Also, for Disney animated movies, the ones I am really excited for a 4K Ultra HD release are the ones which premiered in 70mm (Sleeping Beauty, The Black Cauldron, Treasure Planet).

I know Treasure Planet will be a 2K upscale unless Disney can find a way to re-render CAPS animation in 4K or if they scan an IMAX print in 4K (which would look inferior to even a 2K upscale since it didn’t come from the pure digital source) but Sleeping Beauty and The Black Cauldron will look amazing when they scan the original negatives in 4K and not screw up the grain.
Treasure Planet should be in it’s IMAX open matte aspect ratio of 1:66:1, just like the DVD and Blu-ray.

Sleeping Beauty should be in it’s 2:55:1 CinemaScope negative aspect ratio while The Black Cauldron should be in 2:20:1 from it’s 70mm negative.

And each film should come with it’s theatrical audio mix (4.0 for Sleeping Beauty, 5.1 for The Black Cauldron and Treasure Planet) in DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD in addition to a Dolby Atmos remix for their 4K Ultra HD releases.

Info: Disney's Tarzan 35mm found! for sale on ebay...

Also from the same seller, Treasure Planet http://www.ebay.com/itm/323024463378

I’m more than willing to help pitch in for any of these. Thank you for letting us know about these prints, I hope they find a good home where they can be preserved!

Too bad the bidding has ended.
I would’ve really wanted that.
Especially if the scan was open matte 1:66:1.

However, I would want an IMAX 70mm print to be found, even if it’s nigh-impossible.
As well as the IMAX audio CDs.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Someone asked me something interesting regarding what official releases need to be owned before getting the Despecialized Editions.

Apparently, some countries like Hong Kong and the Philippines had DVD-only versions of the 2011 Special Editions which were the basis for the Despecialized Editions.

She asked me if one is legally allowed to download the Despecialized Editions if she owns the 2011 Special Editions on DVD but not Blu-ray.
And if so, is she allowed to download any version or just the DVD5 version?

And, if she bought the digital releases but only in SD, is she allowed to download any version of the Despecialized Edition or only the DVD5 version?

Please give me answers for my friend who wants to dip into the Despecialized Editions.

As the forum rule states, you’re not allowed to download any movie (The Last Jedi) that does not have an offical home video release/Still in theaters.

I know that.
So I’ll just download the cinema recordings of The Last Jedi when I get my hands on the 4K Ultra HD.

And also, I’m not sure if my plans are gonna go through, since it’s a very daunting task for someone who is always busy like me.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

Harmy said:

Actually, most GOUT shots will be replaced with 35mm - the main difference between v2.5 and v3.0 will be that with 3.0 I’ll be starting from scratch on the whole thing at 1080p, whereas v2.5 will be the same v2.0 720p master with some shots replaced (just like was the case with v2.x of the other films).

Can you please give a timeframe on when v2.5 can possibly be released?
Really excited for this, even if it’s just a minor update.
I am personally expecting this to come out around May the 4th.

Also, I know v3.0 will be a gigantic update for all three movies, especially since you’re starting from scratch at 1080p. and fixing more issues than the v2.x Trilogy.

Dang. Two worlds of hurts back to back!

I agree, though. Getting seamless branching working (thanks again, Williarob) was a challenge enough. Getting a BD-J disc authored and working would be a nightmare, as cool as those picture-in-picture features are.

I think PiP doesn’t need BD-J, since the Japanese Studio Ghibli Blu-rays have no BD-J and they have PiP features in the Storyboards (essentially watch the workprint version of the film where it’s entirely storyboards) and the discs are not BD-J.

The PiP feature in the Storyboards in the Japanese Ghibli Blu-rays is that the workprint takes up the entire screen, you can choose whether the final film can be seen in a smaller window and you can even choose which corner to put the final film’s window.

The US Ghibli Blu-rays, however, don’t have the PiP feature for the workprint storyboards.

And while most people don’t like watching the workprint feature which is a standard for most Ghibli releases, I actually love watching the storyboard versions. I love watching workprints of films, and I really love it when they include a workprint as an extra on the official Blu-ray or DVD.

But I’m getting sidetracked. What I’m saying is that if the Ghibli Blu-rays to get PiP working without BD-J, then it’s theoretically possible for most.

Sounds like true PIP then, and not just burned in? Very cool.

Yes.
And the options for the display of the final version can be brought up with the pop-up menu and you can disable the PiP altogether and just watch the storyboard workprint, but only on the Japanese Blu-rays as far as I know.

I don’t know why Disney (and later GKIDS) cut this out for the US releases.
Especially since they did the opposite with the Diamond Edition Blu-ray of Beauty and the Beast, which had the theatrical edition take up most of the screen while the WIP version was the smaller picture, and it’s actual PiP, even if it’s very disappointing that the WIP version isn’t the one in the big screen.
Then again, they also removed the WIP version in the Signature Edition Blu-ray and made it digital-only for that particular version.
