Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Yeah. There would really be nothing to be gained from using a higher bitrate. And, ok, I'm just gonna go out and say it, even though it's against my better judgement - I will likely do a new render for the BD in which I will fix a few things. I would still prefer any problem be reported via PM, so that I'm not caved in by an avalanche of suggestions and people trying to convince me to fix stuff I don't want to fix.

I might lower the gamma slightly on a few shots in the Luke meets Ben scene, but that's as far as I'm going with it.

That would be fantastic. I've already watched it a few times and that's the only thing that I noticed that seemed slightly off - a few shots when they first meet appear to be too blown out.

Can't wait for the BD version man.

Harmy, man, I just watched it again. Start to finish.

The color grading was fucking superb. Not only that - the detail established in the areas that were previously obscured by black crush was unreal. The difference is even more pronounced after watching it all the way through twice. Also man - the fact that I was mentioned in the "Special thanks" section at the end of the credits almost made me shit myself.

It's only my 2nd viewing in the last couple days but in the next couple weeks I can guarantee you this will get into the dozens.

Now I wait until you craft it into a BD version so I can give it to my brother.

Thanks! I would have run it through spellcheck before wrapping up but half of the words there would get underlined :-)

No problem. I also forgot to put this in my previous post:

The original shots were painstakingly restored using various different sources (listed bellow) and the film ...

...track from the 1993 LD release and a British commentary for visually impaired. An assortment of foreign audio and subtitle options (listed bellow) is also a part of this release...

"Bellow" wouldn't have come up in a spell checker even if you did run it through because it is a word, but there it needs to be "below."

OK, in one hour from now, I'll take all the mixes I have by then and start muxing, packing and uploading.

Here's the readme file I plan to attach to the MKV, let me know if I forgot anything important:

This is a fan preservation made for culturaly historical and educational purposses.

Fanedits and preservations must not be bougth or sold.

5) Cutom mattes, 35mm and 70mm film cell scans etc.

7) Japaneese Special Collection Laser Disc

TRACK 12) 1.0 Brazilian Portugese dub @ 96Kbps

"Subtitles - Project Threepio" folder, copy it to the folder with the .mkv file and rename the .srt file to the same name as the .mkv file,

while keeping the .srt extention.

I'm sure you don't really care about minor misspellings in the Text File but I thought I'd put them in bold italics and underline them if you wanted to fix 'em.

Although it is not explicitly summarised in the thread, my interpretation of the release sequence is as follows:

1. mkv - 16GB 720p mkv, movie only

2. AVCHD - 8.5GB 720p basic Bluray structure, movie only

3. Bluray - 25GB 1080p advanced Bluray structure, movie with extras

Corrections to this view welcomed.

Since the AVCHD will be about half the size of the mkv, then the mkv will be higher quality?

ClownBD can convert mkv-->M2TS-->Bluray without transcoding loss.

M2TS has an additional timestamp field designed for random access in PVRs, players etc, so theoretically has more stable navigation than TS or even mkv. It is curious that some members mention mkv as being better, but perhaps it comes down to the (limited) implementation of M2TS in the players.

One correction. I doubt the blu-ray will be true 1080p. 720p as far as I can tell.

Yeah, Harmy has said this will be 720p... due to the constraints of his hardware and it being designed to suit a single layer BD 25.

That being said - given the fact that the highest quality available source (for most scenes) is the BD which is sourced from an "older" 2004 master, the drop in picture quality won't be all that noticeable with decent compression. The retail BD itself isn't (as in it doesn't appear to be) "true" 1080p either (even though resolution doesn't apply to film as such) relative to other films transferred from much more recent masters (Braveheart, Jaws, Blade Runner, etc.) The data itself is 1920X1080 24p on the Blu Ray, "true 1080p," but that doesn't speak to the actual amount of detail that can be discerned as it plays back. Film has a very high potential resolvable resolution, much more than 1080p, but when the most current master was struck for Star Wars (over 8 years ago) technology was far behind where it is today, so its current BD transfer is hardly on the bleeding edge of visual fidelity. I doubt any significant amount of fine detail will be lost in downconverting this to 720p given the state of the BD.

When dealing with film, "true" 1080p on BD is completely relative - it's purely a marketing term. The Thin Red Line (unbelievable picture quality) and Tomb Raider (shit on a stick) are both "true" 1080p per se on BD in that they're both 1920X1080 24p. Tomb Raider looks horrendous on the medium even though it was shot in the not so distant past; it appearing so soft and flawed was not part of its design as it was being shot (as is the case with some films like Lost in Translation) either, it's the fact that its master is old and sucks dick... Not like a new master would improve Tomb Raider anyway, fucking terrible movie.

I'm not taking a breather at all, I'm studying for my final exams that take place on the 5th September and I definitely don't plan to start any work until after that :-)

And I don't really need to find bonus content as much as create it :-)

Here's the plan for the BD:

Animated Menu (similar to the sample I posted some time ago)

Same video for the main feature as the MKV

All the same soundtracks and subtitles as the MKV but the original three English mixes in lossless and maybe the 93 mix as well and maybe some of the other AC3s in higher bitrate.

A short making of video (HD)

A trailer (HD)

The v1.0 comparison gallery (the one on picasaweb)

New comparison gallery (comparing SE, GOUT, v1.0 and v2.0)

A video comparison of the despecialized shots (1080p) (comparing SE, GOUT, v1.0 and v2.0 - the above gallery will comprise of screenshots from this video)

At least one easter egg (I have something really fun in mind, though I could use help of someone with musical talent)

I'm open to other suggestions of course but I can't promise anything.

As you can see, it will take some time to finish the BD but it should be worth the wait :-)

 That sounds fucking amazing man.

Just got an account here, hate that I have to do this but as much as I love Star Wars it's faster then searching through 185 pages of comments.

1st: I downloaded the demonoid torrents for the entire trilogy and have the iso files. Are these the most current or has there been a new release?

2nd: If anyone can tell me how to mount the images so that i can play them or can point me to a thread that does explain this, please instruct me

3rd: If i burn the files to a dual layer dvd, will it still only work in blu-ray players? im assuming so, hence the earlier question in case i want to show them to someone who has no hdtv/bluray capability

Thanks, I fully and deeply appreciate the help that is hopefully forthcoming.

1: There's a new release for SW coming very, very shortly. Harmy is nearly finished with it, by reading only the last few pages of this thread you'll get a good idea of how far along he is. He plans on also doing Empire and Jedi as well (eventually), but those are a long way off. I'd recommend DL'ing Empire and Jedi and waiting for the new version of SW.

2: I'm a fool when it comes to this sort of thing but I found it very easy to do using ImgBurn (a free program.) Here's the directions for using ImgBurn to burn it to a DVD. For burning the .iso you'd use the "write image file to disc" option and select the .iso. You'll need a DVD burner capable of burning DL DVD's obviously. The new version that's about to be released will also have a Blu-Ray version (for a single layer 25gb BD disc.) You'll need a BD burner for this. The directions can be found here. A DVD version will also be made available for the new version, and you'd follow the first set of directions I linked for that one.

3: Yes, you'd need a BD player (for both the older DVD versions you've already DL'ed and the upcoming improved version of SW). The DVD versions of the films are encoded in AVC-HD, DVD players can't playback discs with that codec.

I favor the top one. The bottom is so "off", so drastically different, that I'm suspicious that there's something wrong with the Technicolor print.

EDIT: The top picture on the previous page, not the two pics just posted. For some reason I thought I was on the last page when I was on the previous page. I blame Frink.

To be fair I don't think the studio would've cared as much if he had waited 35 years after its theatrical run to leak it.... which is the point Star Wars is at now.

This project is not going to undercut any potential sales, it's already been released on several formats over the years, including BD, and there's no indication whatsoever that the UOT will be officially released in anything resembling high quality so it's not as if this would affect Lucas' bottom line.

If Lucas were to get bent out of shape over these fan releases he would've done it years and years ago. He obviously doesn't care.

Info: My attempt at color correcting the GOUT (Outdated thread - though lots of info)

I don't understand why Dark Jedi is compelled to be a jerk to anyone who even flirts with the idea of offending his (overly-delicate) sensibilities.

I have no beef with him personally, and I'm looking forward to his and You-Too's project as much as the next guy... but the always-full-on-abrasive-and-unpleasant shtick got old like 6 years ago. It's just not necessary, it's bizarre if anything. You don't have to lash out and everyone and anyone who offers the smallest critique. Just chill the fuck out, seriously.

Just to let you know guys, I've got lots of school work piled up (what with my final exams coming up and all), so there hasn't been much development lately. I'd wanted the edit to be done before I had to start doing all the school work but since I didn't manage to meet that dead line and I don't want to rush it, because I want to get everything right, I won't be able to resume work on this until the end of May.

How goes the school work Harmy? Done with Finals and stuff?

Beauty, much obliged.

Any idea on ESFs final covers, from this page?

Damn, I've never seen that thread. Some good shit in there.

Anyway, I noticed you were looking for a larger version of that Luke on Hoth painting by McQuarrie, Cobra Kai. Not sure if this helps at all but this is a pretty decent-sized pic.

As you've reworked that entire shot, how about fixing the shadow, too?

Totally, I can get behind this. Harmy, while you're at it I also think you should put Liam Neeson's ghost behind some rocks when Obi Wan first meets Luke. Nothing too gaudy but if he can just peek out a little bit that'd be a cool nod to the prequels and would help tie everything together. It's also probably a little too much but if you could manage it I think you should digitally enhance Vader's visible bulge, nothing too extreme but at least a triple sock ball. Prowse was kind of known for his tiny package and it didn't really ever jive with James Earl Jones' voice. If you could just blow it out a little, really make the bulge pop, I think it'd be way better overall.
