I just had to suspend disbelief and not think about stuff like the ship being under water for 30 years. Or his door being made out of parts of the X-wing. The door Chewie tears off its hinges.
Or Anakin’s Saber magically being made whole again.

I still really enjoyed the movie.

Apparently according to the novelization Rey repaired the ship from parts of the TIE Fighter.

What lovely symbolism, too bad it’s not in the movie…

Unfortunately. The movie could use some quieter moments.

The Sequels - George's Original Trilogy
Time

I’m really sad we’ll more than likely never see George’s full concepts and vision for the Sequel Trilogy.

Like many before me though I’m very intrigued by the Whills and their relationship with the Force. The glimpses it seems we got with the Yoda arc in The Clone Wars with the Force Priestesses wasn’t nearly enough.

George told StarWars.com during a retrospect for The Phantom Menace last year, “Early on, it was that Anakin had been more or less created by the midi-chlorians, and that the midi-chlorians had a very powerful relationship to the Whills [from the first draft of Star Wars], and the power of the Whills, and all that. I never really got a chance to explain the Whills part.”

I really get the impression from taking into account this, George’s conversation with James Cameron, and the Yoda arc that they’re Immortal beings who study and watch the events of the mortal beings and they are the Force. They created Anakin to combat the growing threat of the Dark Side which took the Force out of Balance as it may have always been told by a central Whill. It makes me wonder if part of the journey of the Sequel Trilogy would’ve been about the grandchildren of Anakin discovering their deeper connection to the Force. Similar in a way to the Ones on Mortis. They’d become the embodiments of Light and Dark to maintain long term balance with Anakin serving as Father.

I imagined the Sequel Trilogy we got ending like that in a way. I saw Rey whose a Skywalker (as George wanted) in some way and Ben coming together as the Daughter and Son to embody the Light and Dark as Anakin tries to contain them. Ensuring a long term Balance.

I’m not sure about this now but it really makes me wonder how George would’ve gone about tackling this considering he saw Anakin as the Chosen One.

Prayer requests, Anyone?
Time

I’d really appreciate prayers with my studies. I’m currently studying for my GED as I never finished high school. (Quite a few moons ago now) The biggest reason is if I earn a 2.75 or higher GPA I’ll be able to apply to my dream university in England’s Foundation Year. It’s honestly very intimidating and scary for me as this is truly an opportunity out of a storybook. I’ll get to study Anthropology, Ancient History, Modern History, Sociology, Liberal Arts, English Literature, and Politics to progress to their BA in Visual Arts and Film with Russian. I’ll study the arts, films, and cultures of Russophone Eurasia, Middle East, West, and East Asia. They equally offer a year aboard in Moscow studying at the VGIK, the oldest film school in the world and where my hero Andrei Tarkovsky went. I really need the prayers and strength that I can accomplish this. It’s truly everything I’ve ever wanted and more.

The Phantom Menace - anyone want to chat about TPM?
Time

act on instinct said:

Recently watched TPM on mute, I appreciated it a lot more just by taking it all in visually, so much great design and I could follow the story pretty well despite having not seen it in a long time. I’ve heard another good thing to try if you hate the line delivery is to watch the prequels dubbed in a foreign language with subtitles. Moments still took me out of the movie but they were fewer and farther between, the acting is the biggest fish of the problem, that improves with each prequel.

TPM also I can understand feeling underwhelming to those who really would have preferred to see the characters they already loved in an episode 7, instead it feels like the pilot of a tv series or like the first or second Harry Potter. So it feels like a rejection of the new characters made worse by wooden performances and an overall resistance to change leaving a bad impression. I can admit I just didn’t grow up with these movies first and it does influence my bias, but I’ve come to welcome the prequels to the table when I consider the generation that would actually grow up watching 1-6 in order and don’t have an implicit bias. Anyone is allowed to ignore them but I don’t really think a Gungan is dumber than an Ewok. The way I remember the theatrical releases most people at the time were confused by the sleeker ships and droid technology, and that they wanted to cut to the chase and see Anakin become Darth Vader. But it starts lighthearted and slow and people got impatient. The OT is a classic many fans don’t want tampered with, for some that includes backstory.

George mentioned the last bits in interviews in the 80’s and 90’s.

“If the first trilogy is social and political and talks about how society evolves, Star Wars is more about personal growth and self realization, and the third deals with moral and philosophical problems. The sequel is about Jedi Knighthood, justice, confrontation, and passing on what you have learned.”

I will attach the 90’s quote when I find it.

It really makes me sad to consider what may have been if he made his Sequels. It feels like a natural progression.

Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread
Time

The more I watch Rogue One the more I highly regard it. It definitely captures the spirituality and feel of the first six Star Wars films the best. I love Chirrut and the scenes on Jedha especially. I appreciate how it expands the lore and canon but doesn’t step on the toes of anything that came before or after it. It feels like a love letter to both the Prequels and Originals. I’m always really glad when there’s geninue parallels to the Prequels through ring composition and this film has loads of them. it certainly could use a bit more character development but Sam Witwer made the good point of how in A New Hope we know just about the same amount of information as we do with the characters in Rogue One. It’s really a good point. All and all it’s a beautiful looking film with lots of fun and interesting themes.

I like the prequels a lot. In fact, the more I watch them, the more I like them. Especially after the Disney trilogy (which I do NOT hate btw. Imagine someone actually hating a movie, … A MOVIE 😄 What a pathetic individual that must be. Save such deeply negative feelings for the people and situations that truly deserve them, not a piece of entertainment you don’t like because it’s not what you wanted it to be).

TPM is my favorite of the prequels. Yes, it has its problems and most of the film’s fans are quite aware of them, to a lesser or greater degree.
GL isn’t exactly the greatest director of human actors (he’s better with purely CGI ones - YES, Jar Jar actually has more personality than almost any other character in the film), the dialogue he writes is sometimes weak even for the purpose of his idea of a story that is told mainly through its visuals. And some of those visual ideas can at times come off as a bit too wacky, over the top or even cringeworthy (before you get used to them and eventually get to like them).

And yet, he was able to create the most fascinating, rich and immersive universe by combining known mythological, sci-fi and fantasy themes and ideas with his own vision into this unique world of Star Wars. The world/universe full of the weirdest creatures you’ve ever seen, where the old fairytale-like struggle between good and evil takes place (in a story that actually has a lot more to say than the seemingly simple message on its surface).

I must give GL credit for creating something so imaginative, cool and deep that it has been able to fascinate and grab the interest of so many people of all ages, of many different intellects, professions, religions, etc. and maintain that interest for such a long time.

Even now, with its dated CGI, TPM immediately takes me back to the galaxy far far away anytime I watch it and leaves me with more impression than almost any other modern blockbuster.
For sure, the prequels have their own vibe and atmosphere, very different from the OT and yet so good in their own right. GL introduced us to this new and at the time not-so-perfect CGI technology (which he used in fascinating new ways and also overused, but still - it’s a rather uniform visual style and much of the the uniqueness of the prequels comes from how all those digital backgrounds, CGI creatures, vehicles and sets create this colorful, other-worldly atmosphere of the prequels’ galaxy. Just think about it - with the prequels we were introduced to so many fascinating new worlds, locations, spacecraft and aliens, all of them expanding upon everything that had been established in the OT. Greatly expanding the universe and its mythology.

If the Disney trilogy failed to do one thing it was to let us discover new interesting worlds and capture our imagination the way GL did with his six movies. Always expanding his already rich galaxy in truly imaginative ways, bringing in more interesting and fascinating worlds, aliens and beautiful images overall. His CGI may not hold up to today’s standards but the visual ideas he provided us with are so much more interesting and vivid than the boring environments, aliens, costumes, etc. brought on by the sequels. Maybe it’s because those films were trying so desperately to mimic the OT’s atmosphere that they eventually became almost parodies if it. Plus they had no well thought out story arc and were throwing in ideas on the go
instead of having a good idea about where the story and the characters would go. TPM on the other hand is part of a coherent trilogy of films with a story that felt complete. Not all of it was super interesting (hi, how about an official release of the IMAX cut of AOTC?, gimme please), but at least I knew what and why was going on and felt it was ok if not always perfect.

And no, by introducing new imaginative ideas and images I do not mean images of Lea flying around in open space. We’re not making a parody, we’re expanding upon a well established universe. (coming from a person who actually likes TLJ best out of the sequels).

Mostly agree with everything you’ve said.

👏👏👏👏👏

That’s cool! I’ll have a listen once I have the chance. Really excited to hear his passion come through further.

The Phantom Menace - anyone want to chat about TPM?

Rodney-2187, feel don’t think. Trust your instincts. Haha. The novelization also gives history of the Sith that comes straight from George.

I’m interested to hear your thoughts JadedSkywalker and StarkillerAG after you watch!

I think one interesting thing to note about the Prequels is according to Steven Spielberg in a special called Omnibus (from the lead up to The Phantom Menace) is part of George’s concepts and process for the Prequels was the Sequels. So I do think some of the “Plotholes” like Anakin’s origins were to be explained later. As George told StarWars.com last year during a retrospect for the 20th anniversary of The Phantom Menace that, “Early on, it was that Anakin had been more or less created by the midi-chlorians, and that the midi-chlorians had a very powerful relationship to the Whills [from the first draft of Star Wars], and the power of the Whills, and all that. I never really got a chance to explain the Whills part.”

This is in line with Mark Hamill telling an interviewer in the 80’s that more or less things end in another plain of existence and George discussing things briefly with James Cameron.

There’s also George saying in the commentary for Attack of the Clones that the Clone Wars is very, very important to the whole epic of Star Wars. Around the same time be said in an interview how there’s things in Episode II that connect to VII. I wonder if that could be Sifo-Dyas.

Maybe that one is reaching a little but it does give me the impression he did have a broader vision for the nine part saga even if he denied it happening for a period of time. I think ultimately he wasn’t always trying to link just the Originals and Prequels but set the groundwork for the Sequels if he ever went forward to make them.

It’s little things like these things that really make me think the “Plotholes” were intentionally not resolved and were there for later stories.

I love the Prequels and Originals equally.

It’s implied in the novelization when they’re in the hanger as they’re about to leave Naboo that Qui-Gon is well aware of what is going on between Padme and Sabe when they have their “We are brave, your highness” back and forth.

There’s also Qui-Gon’s tongue and cheek moments on Tatooine when he tells Padme “The Queen doesn’t need to know” and “The Queen trusts my judgment, young handmaiden. You should too.”

It’s my favourite Star Wars film. That is all, that is all.

Why? I’m genuinely curious. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone with this opinion before.

I really love the story told in the film. I ultimately see it as being overall about people helping people and symbiotic relationships. I love how the story is very light hearted but has underlying cynical layers that show corruption and greed like with Watto and his gambling, Sebulba and cheating, and the Trade Federation and their dealings with Palpatine. I feel these things show the seeds of what begins the decay of the Republic as a whole. This is contrasted by Anakin’s desire to help his new friends, Qui-Gon doing the right thing by freeing Jar Jar, and Jar Jar bringing the Naboo and Gungans together. It’s great cause and effect. The characters are all interesting and play off of each other really well. I especially think so with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan as you see one following what he feels to be the will of thes Force while the other follows more of the rigid compliance of the Jedi Order. There’s even little subtle moments like Qui-Gon putting his hand on Shimi’s shoulder that contrasts the Jedi later who are slowly losing their compassion. I also love that the Trade Federation is more physics based while the Gungans are more biology and organic based. There’s lots of duality like that within the film. The world building is beautiful with underwater sequences, Coruscant before it became more commercial as seen in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, and seeing new sides to Tatooine. There’s a sense of scale and atmosphere. It doesn’t feel like everywhere is within walking distance but actually takes time to get to point B from A. The action is some of the best in the series as you have the podrace, Duel of the Fates, taking back Theed, a War and Peace like battle between the battle droids and gungans, and quite a lot more. That’s not even mentioning John Williams’s score or the costumes. Both are truly incredible. There’s a lot going on and it makes discovering new things each viewing all the more exciting!

There’s a lot more I could say about why I love it but that’s just some of my reasons!

Time

Let’s see if someone can help me find this movie after years of trying to find it again!

There’s this film that came out in the late 80’s or very early 90’s about two brothers and a girl they both like. It’s set in Miami as the oldest brother was a Heat fan and the little brother has a very severe fear of the water because their father had a drowning accident. I remember he worked as a lifeguard and I’d like to say had a Walkman he listened to but I can’t be certain about that detail. I remember though they both liked the same I believe blonde hair girl and they had a fight over it.

That’s about all I can give as it’s been a few years since I’ve seen it on one of the film channels but I remember really enjoying it.
