A revised opinion of George Lucas
Time
Is it a sin that Lucas' desire to tinker with his movies outweighs this so-called responsibility for his fans and lmasterpieces that he never saw? Fans serve themselves well enough, they dont need to be the deciding factor in George's movies.

And I would agree that Lucas made some poor decisions, but I accept the good points of them. I don't take it that serious. I have fun.

I had been building up all this hope for the epic duel between Anakin and Ben, but it just felt a little flat. I know it was a "fancy" saber fight, etc., but I thought the fights in Empire, Jedi, and the Maul fight were better. More "weight" to them I guess. Lucas screwed himself by letting TPM be almost completely an introduction film that really didn't advance the story that much, and left ROTS to tie up a bunch of loose ends really quickly. Bad planning in my opinion.

I'm going to have to disagree. The two trilogies basically tell different stories. The subplot between Anakin and Palpatine is good enough to tie the two together, but basically the idea of the prequel trilogy (not to say its a perfect story) was done fairly well, in an awkward very Star Wars sort of way. Long, political, action-filled, sci fi fantasy, eye candy.

Padme's grave - is it mentioned in the EU / novels?
Time
I havent read the book, but I know theres one where Leia and Han (or Luke... somebody) goes back to Tatooine and do some research about Anakin. They find out about his mother, and Anakin's massacre and how that related to Beru and Lars.... honestly, I don't remember how that all worked out in the PT myself...

Is Lars still related to Obi Wan, or was that idea scratched when AOTC came out???

it's hard to reconcile the first two prequels with ROTS, because I do dislike them so much, and like the latest one. it feels...weird. i never expected to have any new star wars I could stomach watching.

thanks, i knew i wasnt the only one
Last night I rented TPM and I noticed just how visually beautiful all of it was. Though I still havent found a copy of AOTC, I have a feeling that the main problem with the first 2 sequels was that George was trying to tell too many stories, and became much too involved in subplots and new characters. Jar-Jar himself as a stand-alone character is really interesting (possibly not the right word), but overall not important to the story. He's not as fake-looking as I remember him to be.
I never watched the prequels as much as the OT, and having payed careful attention and repeated viewings of TPM, I've come to peace with it much moreso than ROTJ. The pod race scene is pretty perfect, and I'm sure most of us agree that the darth Maul fight is one of the best in the entire series, and the other scenes are either stunning visuals are an attempt to introduce the characters and circumstances of the prequels. Just my careful new impressions of the story. Lucas definately tried to tell a different kind of story than the OT, and maybe the difference between the first two prequels and the third is supposed to be as noticable as it is. There's an innocent fairy tale, where the some of heroes don't even have to intentionally defeat their enemies. A story about heroes who start to realize that they're being manipulated, but their suspicions are ingored once war begins, and right when they're beginning to realize that they've been fooled, they're wiped out. Doesn't make for the best movies, but it definately has a dramatic payoff.

I've yet to re-evaluate AOTC. I really can't wait to just sit and watch it. Blockbuster's new "No Late Fee" policy is convenient, but it also means that folks never return the damn DVDs!

Too bad that in the 19 years between ROTS and ANH Obi-Wan ages so badly. Oh, no offense mr. Guiness, wherever you are.

he went from like 35 too 55

i can see the aging there.

Definately, I have seen some horrible things happen in that amount of time. Even less. I may look no further than my parents... considering the greif for a once great Jedi establishment, the constant threat of imperials, a Jedi's endless wait for a mission, and living in exile on harsh planets, its no wonder Ben and Yoda seem a tad winkled, worn and loony.

I haven't watched a SW movie since midnight ROTS
Time
I used to be a real happy SW kid. I taped the OOT off of TV when I was 7, mom bought the Star Wars Encyclopedia when I was 8, I curled the pages of that thing into paper fluff in a matter of weeks, and continued to be a hardcore fan until I was 12. I bought the Episode 1 screenplay a couple weeks early and couldnt decifer any of the dialog, and by the time I got to Jar-Jar's dialog I gave up. I must have been wondering what the hell "bombad" was supposed to mean. I'm still a little confused where Lucas even came up with that one.
I watched TPM twice at the Zeigfeild in Manhattan. The first time I was just happy to see some Star Wars. The second time I was just OK with it, and by the time the VHS came out, I realized there were only 2 sequences I liked. The podrace and the lightsaber duel. Overall, it killed my dwindling interest in Star Wars to near nothing, because my usual hunger for SW was not being satiated by new star wars literature and technical guides about a movie I wasn't so keen on.

I watched AOTC once in theaters (i walked to the theater after a hard day, and i was surprised it wasnt crowded), opening day after school. It wad fun for me because I hadn't seen Star Wars in years, but for some reason I never made it back. I rented it once and Natalie Portman's nipples were missing, and I was devastated and I don't even think I finished watching it. (I'm only kidding... maybe)

My roommate in college (a regular on this board) had all his DVD's at my fingertips, and he let me watch the Balance of the Force, and Clone Wars and in a way that just made me resent the Prequels more. I do enjoy MagFan's work though, and plan to follow it.

I watched ROTS (the tuesday after it came out, coincidentally another hard day), and sat back as this movie somehow made me grieve for the prequel characters i never even cared for, and ripped my heart out watching them being killed, defeated, and decieved by an evil politician. It was like reliving 9/11, except I knew everyone. I cried a WHOLE LOT. I know somebody else must have experienced something close to what I felt watching ROTS.

When I got home, my interest in Star Wars was rekindled. I forgave George Lucas, I forgave the first 2 prequel movies, and I can definately say that it actually enhanced my opinion of episode 4 (though I now think williams' interpretation of the imperial theme needs an update to match the rest of the movies). As a younger fan, I had a hard time watching A New Hope all the way through. I found it to be a bit predictable, but considering its placement after Episode 3, its a rush of good natured hero vs. villain action cinema.

Recently, I watched the original Episode 4, four times in a row. I mean, I watched it three times in a row one night, went to bed, and watched it again. I would have gone on if I didn't have other things I had to do, but in a way, ROTS made me rejoyce every time the Death Star blew up, and revel in the magic of the End Credit music more than I ever did when I was 8.

So I'd have to reccomend ROTS to anyone who really LOVES Star Wars to the point you SMILE every time Luke does, and get the giggles every time R2 makes a insulting remark at C3PO. It's a hard movie to watch once everything's set in motion, but I think it makes episode 4 feel even better than it used to.

Sorry if you don't like endless rants about my sad devotion to an ancient religion.

PS: I started reading the EU stuff again and this time I'm old enough to know it's completely unhealthy, but it isn't really? Right?

PPS: What's this list you speak of, Hardcore Legend?

So why Define STAR WARS as OT OR PT?
Time
Han isn't really dodging that blast easily. If you notice, he takes his endless badass essence and conjurs up a computer-generated action, and then he smokes Greedo. I liked it when the screen filled with sparks and gave us a Fried Green Rodian. Just a personal preference. If I make any edits of the trilogy, I'd get rid of this ridiculous and pointless special effect, as well as Jthe cruddy-looking Jabba scene.

Also, Jabba's appearance in Episode one really doesn't exist to many folks here. To some of us, Epsisode 1 doesnt exist. To others, we rely on MagFan's talents to deliver the good edits.

PS: I also like the deleted scenes in the prequels. I actually like Jarjar's waterfall sequence, but I'm not sure why! Heck, I even like Jarjar, just not his goofy "tongue" scenes.

Hey, I watched the original Star Wars three times tonight. I'm a sick person like everybody else now!

So why Define STAR WARS as OT OR PT?
Time
Tony, I became a fan around the same time you did, and I find I share many of your viewpoints. I too find the original film trilogy to be highly overrated (especially Jedi now that I'm older) and the the prequel films should be considered more.
However, the posters of this forum do make as many good points. They will probably just have to live with the newer films and treat them the way most treat the Expanded Universe stories.
I have a few ideas for fan edits (though currently I don't have the technology, much less the time, nor experience to pull it off).
One of an isolated original trilogy (probably edited DOWN from the upcoming final edits mixed with previous cuts) to include the more desirable special effects while restoring the original revelation of the Falcon (Jabba is too gangsta to get stepped on like one guy pointed out), Han's blast, original sarlacc (the new one bugs me! was that in the SE? I don't remember), and the original Anakin. You know, the "aint broke" stuff.
The second a 6-film would include these same changes, with the inclusion of deleted scenes from the prequelsminus a few cheap giggles from Jarjar (the poo-butt joke, the "my tongue" bit, and boss nass' floppy cheeks) and some of lil' Annie's dialog (this is pod racing, yippee, it's working, oops... goddamn Jake Lloyd).

Actually, these edits are so minor that I'm confused why George Lucas wouldnt have fixed these silly silly things by now, but he probably won't. We'll see how it turns out. Hopefully Lucas will do SOMETHING to fit the movies together, and have the sense to make the ANH jabba scene a bonus rather than to exist in the film).

To Tony, as much as you accuse the old school fans of holding on too tightly to their childhood, you seem to protect George's "True Star Wars Story" with as much passion. I like to keep in mind that the Star Wars universe is subject to endless imagination. Nothing in Star Wars has ever been official, and I'm sure that even after the 30th Anniversary, we'll find continuity disaggreements, not to mention bad acting and mistakes. BTW, did they ever fix the mirror-image Boba Fett?

Natalie Portman Goes CUEBALL!!!!!!!!!

If you have an attention span to read fanboys complain about SE's and PT's, you probably don't mind reading a few curse words. All I have to say is that when I saw AOTC in the theaters, I could have sworn I saw Portman's nipples just sticking out of that white outfit of hers, and when I rented the DVD I was greatly disappointed and I havent watched it since.

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New Hope score could use a couple retouches. You can't tell me it's perfect. Half of that shit sounds like Planet of the Apes. I'm sure even John Williams would agree considering he's used Vader's signature music in all other 5 films.

EPISODE 4
Enter Vader
Cue generic bad-guy music

EPISODE 5
Cue IMPERIAL MARCH

I won't miss the throw-away 3-second villain fanfare. It never clicked with the other movies. If you're convinced otherwise, please explain to me WHY.

Should Lucas replace Guiness with an aged McGregor?
Time
I agree completely with THX's every statement. I did the same thing after seeing Episode 3 and I found the same problems. The current Empire Strikes Back looks very modern even today, and I'd never go for a CGI Yoda. I think some scenes could be spruced up with better special effects so it matches the prequels, which I'm sorry to say guys, is not nearly as bad as you think it is, especially compared with the original trilogy which has been placed on a pedestal of perfection. They're just movies! I don't think I've stayed awake or sat through through A New Hope since I saw it for the 49th time. Great story. Great characters. Wonderful movies, but not perfect. I'm open to any progression.
About Obi-Wan, McGregor looks and sounds like Alec Guiness more than I could ever imagine. That dude's crazy. CGI Yoda looks damn good, and they need to replace the TPM puppet. Never looked for moved right.

The Prequel Curse
Time
I hope you guys dont mind my 2 cents. I'm 18. As a kid who grew up with star wars (age 8-11 most vigorous) I watched the original theatrical versions over and over followed by the special editions (this was very exciting but the jaba always looked too fake). When I saw TPM, it was like I had to move on. Sure, I had fun, but I really couldnt get involved with the characters, or fully understand the plot. I blame Lucas for his warped sense of screen writing (I'm no fan of scifi either). At any rate, I've watched TPM less than 10 times since it came out.
Fast forward to last tuesday. I watched Episode 3 and I can forgive the prequels because the whole time I wasn't seeing the entire story. Now, do I enjoy the original trilogy? Yes, but as a young person who broke ties with the story and made my peace with it, I've accepted the changes made to the original movies and the differences in the PT. I don't think that means I'm accepting "crap." To me it's the same crap you can find in the original trilogy. I hope the posters in this forum don't actually believe that the original trilogy is flawless... just that it should be available the same way other classic films are (at least A New Hope). Anyone who refuses to accept, or who isn't in any way satisfied with these new things Lucas has given us may feel this way because of a prolonged worship of these flawed, and somewhat dated films. These films belong to Lucas, and his main objective is to make the story he wanted to, and I think he should have freedom to complete it the way he wants. If it means an extra scene with Han and Jabba, I can accept it because it helps introduce the character who for 3 films previous wasnt seen and is now going to be a main character in the second trilogy. If that means an extra scene with the Emporor in Episode 4, I say go for it. A New Hope as it stands in the vast scheme of things isn't going to flow well with the other movies. As a revived fan, I want to see this story unfold.
What's really important is that the characters, the story, and the music are there. Can anyone really complain about the music in the prequel trilogy? In some respects, I think it's better than the originals. Do I REALLY care that Boba Fett's voice is different? Well, maybe a little bit, but I don't mind that much if it takes me back to Epside 2 for a moment. Maybe what it comes down to is that if you've become attached to something so much for over 20-30-40 years (is this healthy? i'm too young to know), you're not going to want to see these changes. I think that if Lucas really wants to, he'll accomplish the real thing.
Heh. 2 cents is probably easier to digest than that. Take it or leave it.

ESB always. Stylisticly the most interesting to me. The only Star Wars film with half-decent dialog. Fun and tragic. The details of the force.
Sith is another magic movie. A Return of the Jedi with a more interesting story. I actually cried for about 40% of the time the first time I watched it. Just gut wrenchingly ugly and tragic. So in short...

Empire
Sith
Hope
Menace
Jedi
Clones

No offense to Jedi, but I feel it drags too much in the middle. Hopefully, Williams has been asked to compose some new stuff for A New Hope, because I think it's too detached to the overall story right now. Very impressed with the outcome of all the movies stringed together.
