The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

Not to go off topic, but I'm incorporating some ideas similar to stuff that's been brought up here, or so I'm told, in my TPM edit I'm working on. I'd be happy to include some of these other ideas in there too, but I don't have a good track record with special effects. Things like darkening the skies of Naboo I can't really do, but would love to include.

Basically, I want to make a cool, different version of TPM. Not too radical, but different. So if you guys want some of this stuff incorporated, I'll see what I can do!

So I want to put an update here for everyone following along.

- The goal is to make the film feel like more of a standalone adventure movie, similar to the original Star Wars and the first Pirates of the Caribbean.

- No Jar Jar

- A bigger focus on Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan as the protagonists

- Darth Maul replaces Sidious as the main villain. This will be done via darkening the Sidious holograms and adding a new voice over for Maul.

- The story now revolves around a new energy source discovered on Naboo, and the Federation's desire to control it.

- The inexplicable lightsaber battle room is now the energy source mine.

- C-3PO will be removed entirely from the film.

- The obvious stuff (no midichlorians, no accidental heroics, no fart gags, no Captain Olie-Obvious)

Everyone caught up? Good. Because this thing has gotten pretty crazy over the past few days since I originally posted. Please post crazy ideas. I want to make this movie really sing. There are already good edits of TPM, so I don't feel like I need to play it safe. Let's try some new shit. It could be a great new Star Wars movie, or it could be an interesting failure. Either way, it'll be fun.

Yes. How is this for a start?

Turmoil has engulfed the
Galactic Republic. The small planet
Of Naboo has discovered a powerful
New source of energy deep in the
core of their planet.

While most of the galaxy celebrates
Their discovery, the greedy Trade
Federation has blockaded the planet,
Wanting the source for themselves.

While the congress of the
Republic endlessly debates
this alarming chain of events,
the Supreme Chancellor has
secretly dispatched two Jedi
Knights, the guardians of
peace and justice in the
galaxy, to settle the conflict...

I quite like that, but I want there to be a hint of Sidious in there so it has some lead in to the other prequels. What if we only see Sidious when Maul talks to him on Naboo?

If I just remove the face from the Sidious Holograms and add a new voice, it should work well. Then it'll be a great moment when our shadowy antagonist pulls dowm his hood to reveal he's got badass horns on his head.

I like it. I like it a lot.

I'm not entirely sure how that's all going to work out. I want to focus on getting the story structure down first. I may or may not dub Maul, but definitely the Neimoidians. I gotta try and erase Jar Jar from everything as well, which might be tricky. Specifically in the scene where the Jedi jump off the overpass to save the Queen. It'll be really hard to cut around him there.

I'm going to add in the Anakin beating up Greedo scene, but I'll leave out mention of that being Greedo. He's just some kid.

I'm also going to trim the podrace down a bit and add music.

The fight at the end will resemble how I cut it for Duel of the Fates, minus the new music.

Well, I don't know that Jedi would allow themselves to be distracted by some energy releasing. I don't think it has to be a huge effect. It could look pretty cool though.

AND I could get rid of the cheesy CGI Maul splitting in half. He could start to fall down the pit, then an energy blast could engulf him. Obi-Wan watches, the blast stops, he switches off the lightsaber and runs to Qui-Gon. Badass.

What if that bottomless pit spews out energy, and the doors keep the excess heat contained?

It's not really something I could do, but what if when the doors are closed we get some energy emission, maybe something that looks similar to the explosion after the Emperor is tossed into the bottomless pit in his office in ROTJ?

Then there's at least a vague reason for the doors to exist, and it plays into the new energy source concept.

That's all I needed. Thank you very much.

The tone poem probably won't fit anywhere, but it is seriously awesome. I've never seen that before.

I'm just trying to make Grievous more sinister. I think a more Darth Maul-like voice, maybe a bit less calm and controlled, would sell him better.

I've got 3 days off this weekend, time to get down to it. I'll post some of what I work on.

so the video stream from my mkv comes out as ".h264" format. I can't open that with anything. Anyone know what my next step should be? I figure it needs to be mp4/move, but it doesn't come out that way.

I've also decided that throughout the prequels I'm going to change some lightsaber colors. Mace's will be green, Grievous' will all be red.

Also Grievous will have a different voice. English accent, low, quiet... a bit like Maul's, actually...

Let's all say something nice about George Lucas. No insults allowed.

I'll get back on topic, swear, but let me just say that every fanediting comes with the understanding that you must own a legal copy of the movie before downloading the fanedit. It becomes piracy if you did not pay for the legal copy of the movie. If you have a copy of Star Wars, it's just a back up. There's very little the feds can do with that. I've also never heard of anyone getting in trouble over a fanedit.

Back on topic, I've always liked that Lucas lets others play with the universe. The Clone Wars has gone from a crappy movie to a fantastic TV series, with some of the best Star Wars EU stories in existance. A lot of that comes from direct input from Lucas, but clearly the show belongs to Dave Filoni. Filoni brings a great style to the show without losing the "Star Wars" vibe. Lucas doesn't have to let him get dark on the show, or kill characters. And I gotta respect that.
