TPM 1080p Theatrical Preservation (a WIP)

This might already have come up (albeit seemingly not in this thread), but the theatrical edit of the pod race sequence is included as an extra in the digital release of TPM.

No idea what resolution it's in, though.

It's good that you pointed it out because they are quite many who are not aware of that. I wonder how good it looks. Has anyone put it to vimeo or anywhere else? I'm not going to buy TPM again just to see one 10 minute scene.

Since I raised the question, I thought I'd best attempt to answer it! Here's the 35mm trailer scan vs. the Blu-ray and PAL DVD:

 photo SWTPM comparison.jpg

I should stress that this isn't an identical frame - the shot as used in the trailer is cut at completely different positions, so there's no overlap - but I estimate there's about a 5-6 frame difference here.

The DVD, as expected, is the most conservative of the three, while the Blu has the most picture area in general and the film scan sits somewhere inbetween. I presume the folks who scanned the film* captured every possible shred of picture information; perhaps more than would have realistically been projected. So the previous assertion of a-bit-more-than-the-DVD seems pretty much on the money...

*Since the trailer came from the other site they might wish to keep a low profile here, but I'll certainly credit them if they like!

Give me a hint where I could get that 35mm scan.

I know I touched on this earlier but I'm still on the fence as far as the extended frame from the Blu-ray goes.

It would be great if RU.08 would somehow be able to put back the 8% of the picture that was missing from every release before Blu-Ray. It's going to be really hard though.

Random thought, but my crazy hope for adywan's PTR is that he replaces CGI Yoda completely with a OT accurate puppet. Pretty simple request right? That shouldn't be too hard. But seriously I would love it and he's the only person with the skills and drive to make that happen.

If not him, maybe someday someone else... who knows?

I'm pretty sure he can do it but it will be extremely time-consuming. I've always liked the TPM puppet more than the CGI one from the other two. He looks so symphatetic and happy. I know something went wrong because he doesn't really look like the Yoda from OT but it doesn't bother me. Adywan could easily fix the mouth movements and eyes. Didn't he enhance Yoda somehow in TESB:R?

I don't think they intended to add the bridge, I think it was a result of re-rendering the scene from the wrong computer file. These screenshots are from the bluray:

I don't think so. Jorge just didn't pay attention. He wanted to add the bridge but didn't realize it should be added to that other shot aswell. There are numerous horribly executed changes in the OT. For example in ROTJ during "Jedi Rocks" you can still see the original Sy Snootles puppet in the earlier scene. In ANH in the "dead end" scene they forgot to change the reflection of the ground that still showed the wall even though there was now this huge hall full of Stormtroopers.

Idea: The Force Awakens Color Correction

In defense of this thread, there is a lot of stuff that is in this section of the forum that doesn't belong (like 98% of the posts in Ady's threads that ask when the edit will be finished). Changing the color timing of the film, does not count as a preservation, and it doesn't count as other. I say it counts as as a fan edit.

I think the color tint to the film looks fine. It's not a ridiculous level like Man of Steel or the Attack of the Clones. I also support the idea to make the film look more classic as a fun project.

 You get it.

TPM Jabba has always bothered me. Why is he so grey? :D I know LD and DVD had the weird pink tint. Blu-Ray kinda fixed it but made Jabba look even worse :P He's obviously green in ROTJ and the animators know that. I don't believe he was aways like that in TPM. I found one picture (probably some kind of promo pic) from Google. Here he's clearly more green than grey:

I would assume he looked more like this in theaters (I can't really remember). What do you guys think?

What about the audio? Are you going to use the cinema DTS or something else?

Keep up the good work!

Those trading cards look so much better! We have to wish that only the trailers and tv spots use the orange and teal colors so heavily and the actual movie uses colors closer to those cards. Sadly the orange and teal color palette seems to be a trend in the modern Hollywood but It's not an end of the world if they do decide to use those overused colors. Fans can quickly fix that problem :)

Here's a comparison of the shot in question:

In the bottom "Revisited" half, notice how much light there still is along the walls. It has always been this way originally but, as evidenced by the previous shot, there should hardly be any light down here (only the minimal light the MF emits).

The top half of this split-screen was gradually shadowed darker so its interior matches the previous shot of the interior better. As it's traveling downward, wherever the MF is, that's where the light should be more prominent.

I'm hopeful Ady will take this into consideration, if he hasn't already.

Maybe Adywan has already changed that. That seems like a pretty obvious continuity "error". It's not a big one but good that you pointed it out.

While we're on the subject of the asteroid field, I'd like to bring up this question, since it was never answered.

In the latest version of the asteroid chase, when the Falcon gets close to the surface of the big asteroid, it still has a perfect circle for a shadow. Is it still in the plans to make a more detailed shadow that matches the Falcon's shape?

Guys! Answer to this questions and stop complaining about the donations!

All of you probably remember this scene where the Tie Fighter explodes:

Did you ever wish that this explosion would have been the Death Star explosion. I did. It looks much more realistic and bigger and cooler and... and... well... yeah :D

It's funny how that little Tie Fighter could explode like that and Death Star's explosion looked so tame compared to it.
