Just curious, Williarob: is there any overlap between this project and the Team Blu / Poita restoration effort? This would seem to be the ultimate preservation of SW77, will it render Poita’s project moot?

I’d also like to say that, even if The Mouse House embark on their own 4K reissue I still believe yours to be a very worthwhile and essential effort. Disney will still go back to the negative and may well foul up the color timing again while digitally scrubbing the movie within an inch of its life. I love the grain I see here; the mild presence of dirt, the subtle picture weave that speaks directly to my memory of what Star Wars - and film-going - was like in '77. That’s something a glossy modern transfer is very unlikely to achieve.

For those of you wanting a closer look at the difference between the Denoised and non-denoised version:

I know some of you will hate the DNR, while others will prefer it, which is why I figured I should make two versions…

Jedit: By the way, the DNR is calibrated on a shot by shot basis, rather than just applying it to the whole film with one setting. As we all know, some scenes are much grainier than others!

I’m firmly in the anti DNR camp so extra thanks is in order for your being so considerate to we grain fetishists. 😃

A couple of questions:
Is a Grindhouse release on the cards?

Harmy’s Grindhouse of Jedi is from these scans, is it not?

I was wondering more about Star Wars '77 - there hasn’t been a Grindhouse version released to my knowledge - but as Poita is producing all new restorations from multiple prints any fresh Grindhouse takes on ESB and JEDI may be marginally superior (ie; worn-looking as opposed to tattered) to the -1 and Harmy cuts. While I do treasure the existing GH editions, ESB is rough almost to the point of distraction in some spots. A slightly more refined GH preservation would be a very appealing prospect to me although I can completely understand if this is neither a real priority nor something that fits conveniently into this project’s workflow. Once again, huge props and thanks to Poita, Harmy, tN1, et al for their hard work. Legends all.

The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)

Hello everyone,
I’m a long time lurker, first time poster and grateful beneficiary of this community’s efforts, just wanting to express a heartfelt thank you to all involved in the heroic work being done to preserve The Trilogy.

Poita, I’m thrilled that you are spearheading a new set of restorations; the sample you have just posted looks marvelous. A huge thank you to you for your ongoing efforts.

A couple of questions:
Is a Grindhouse release on the cards? And may I ask from what source(s) are you restoring Empire?

Cheers!
