#1 they are all assigned one token, and a counter will collect all these tokens as to be able to assert that they have all entered the central living area.

#2 During the first 100 days:

If it is their first time in the living room and the light is off to leave it off. They then remove their token.
If it is their second time in the living room and the light is off to turn it on and assign themselves the role of the counter. The count (number of tokens) is equal to the day number minus one (since he's been in the room twice).
If the light is on, do nothing regardless until day 100, in which case switch it off.

This gives a bit of a head-start, on average the initial count is 12. Meaning there are now on average 11 people with no token, 88 people with one token each and the counter with 12 tokens.

I will also give you my main concept, which I came up with myself and is a huge advantage if you couldn't think of it yourself.

The concept is if we were to assert that a prisoner releases his token, wherever possible for the counter to collect by turning the light on, then we expect the counter and everyone else to enter the room once every time a token is released. Meaning there is conceptually 100 room entries per token release. Reducing this ratio should be our main concern.

I believe I've worked out the perfect strategy, but I have to do some pretty heavy number-crunching until I can make it optimal.

Afterwards I believe I could then produce an optimal strategy with the rather nasty alteration:

The procedure ends not when a prisoner asserts that all prisoners have entered the room, rather the prisoner must assert that all other prisoners now know and have asserted that all prisoners have entered the central living room.

Ooooh that's nasty, I shouldn't have thought of it. But it can be done.

why doesnt my way work.

Even if Karma wanted to do it, he couldn't. Starting up an offtopic thread within a topical section is just bad form and Karma wouldn't do that anyway.

Karma, he was definitely out of line and I don't see any reason why an off topic section cannot be created. Have you tried sending private messages to the rest of the forum membership to get their opinion? I'm sure that if you were to find a large group of people who want it and were willing to e-mail the Nazi... errr... forum mod all at the same time, he might see the light and start up the section.

I say a bunch of you give the mod an e-mail blitzkrieg.

i know but if you start creating thread in a folder inwhich they dont belong eventually the webmaster will have to create a place for them.

well your both wrong and only one of you is right. gun you are correct as far as i know P4 is better the Celeron, and gun you are wrong about AMD. in terms of desktop PCs AMD is the the best proccessor to get. they have been known to need a lill more cooling then the other but overall they are by far the best PC chips to get. i dont know what your friends was talking about with centrino a buddy of mine has one and i have compared his to my P4 i get about 3 and half to 4 hours of batt life, he gets liek 6 and a half to 7 hrs. and in terms of speed his is equal to mine, if not faster. ill ask him thou if his chip is getting wonky and if his batt life is reduced.

ok well how about they decide that the first time a prisonor goes they turn the light bulb on and then off and each time after that they dont touch the light. so then the prisoners jsut count the numebr of times the light bulb is on and once they reach 100 they will know that everyone has beeen in the room once.

no i am not at all

the 1.5 processor will run just as fast if not faster then the P4 3.0. why its becase centrino processors have bigger caches and so they can instantly compute information faster. it the same idea(i think) as a mac G4 1.7 being as fast as the P4 3.5 for something along those lines.

that is also part of the reason centrinos saves batt life, its because it uses less power to do the same task as a P4, and it needs less cooling.
