Raiders of the Lost Ark HDTV 35mm LPP regrade
Time

I imagine this will be the best-looking version of the film compared to the 35mm LPP scan?

I’m not very sure of it myself though. From seeing the comparisons of the HD TV/Blu-ray with the 35mm scan, the 35mm version almost looks excessively dark. I gave it a pass until I noticed the same when comparing the 35mm scan of Star Trek III (released by the same group as this project’s 35mm master) with the HD TV cap, the colours look a hell of a lot more muted, desaturated, and dark.

Perhaps I’ve been ruined by all the extremely bright and vibrant Blu-ray releases of classic films and don’t know how they’re truly supposed to look, but are we absolutely sure that the film’s not just faded or weathered after all this time? Is this fairly accurate to the original presentation?

EDIT: Apologies for all the questions, but does anyone know what master this TV broadcast was sourced from?

Has anyone compared the restored 35mm scan of Star Trek III (from Spleen) with its HD TV counterpart?

I haven’t seen either yet, but the screenshots of the 35mm print look glorious and it comes with the PCM 2.0 Laserdisc track. It’s much easier to attain so I’m leaning towards grabbing that rather than the TV version.

Screenshots here and here.

I’m guessing there’s no real point to using up HDD space on the Star Trek II cap. The new Blu-ray seems to be a faithful restoration and a 4K UHD release is on the horizon. The others though… sheesh.

BTW, since no one seems to be interested in any restoration project with the DTS/PCM tracks, would anyone mind putting them up on the Spleen?

dlbsyst sent me encrypted filenames and passwords for the Sky rips last year. They were accessible through NZBclub.com until recently, when they had a hard drive crash. They are currently rebuilding their huge 2800-plus-day database, I’m looking up the encrypted filenames and they currently don’t show up. No idea if they’ll ever come back.

But I do have the TS files for 1-4 and 6 (I do not like 5 so I never downloaded it, now I kwish I had). I could upload them on one of my cloud drives on one of the storage sites I’m signed up for, but I don’t think they’d all fit at once.

TServo2049 these were posted to Usenet over 7 years ago but appear to still be available if your provider has them in retention. Mine seems too. I use Usenet Server (UNS). I can post the file names if that is allowed. Otherwise send me a PM and I can set you up for the ones you don’t have. Skycaps for Generations, First Contact and Insurrection are available also. NZBClub is a no go but you can find them on NZBKing.com

PM’ed.

That would be greatly appreciated. Even just going one at a time!

I’m curious though, how and why are the broadcast versions so different from the Blu-rays? I don’t get why they’d slather inappropriate amounts of DNR and EE all over the BRs and leave the TV versions untouched.

Things like this can be earlier scans done that were originally made and cleaned up for DVD, but also used for HDTV streaming. The picture quality is lower, but it’s not as big of a deal for DVD, and HDTV presentation might have been a lower priority (especially when it was less common). Along comes blu-ray and a push for the idea that sharper and smooth is good, while grain is bad.

In most cases, the older HDTV transfers aren’t shown much once the blu-ray comes out.

Ah, okay. Well that’s a shame then. Anyone know where to find the older HDTV transfers?

Anyway, Sky are showing all ten Prime films on Monday July 18 on their new “Sky Cinema Star Trek” channel. I don’t know if they’re the same versions as the ones we’ve been talking about in this thread, but I thought I’d let you guys know anyway. I don’t have the channel, but I’m considering going for a month just so I can cap them.
