Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * <strong>SPOILER THREAD</strong> *
Time

Well, products are getting leaked like crazy, so I don't even know what is worth posting anymore - it's out there if you want to see it. Out of today's leaks, though, this image of a calendar was probably most worthwhile:

http://i.imgur.com/6qCnGhh.jpg

It has some images that I don't think we've seen before. I'm partial to that one of 3P0/R2/BB-8 - I think it's cool to see all three together.

Also, if people care, this visual spoilerboard is pretty up to date and seemingly very accurate. (I've personally still only ventured into the first part, though, because I don't want toooo much spoiled):

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByQR6taehVh7MUdKLWdLRUx5eG8/view?pli=1

I would say that the picture of the Stormtrooper running in the market-type setting basically confirms some of the scenes that that spoilerboard says.

Regarding the lightsaber,  I'm mostly amused at how much consternation it's causing. It's fine, and, if the working assumption that Kylo built it himself with minimal training is correct, I think it fits perfectly. To each their own, but I really don't think it's worth making a big deal out of

This, this was beautiful. I'm not super tech-y or anything, but this is by far my favorite thing you guys have posted / what I think looks the best. I never had a chance to see the originals in theaters, so my only experience with the theatrical versions has been cleaned up GOUTs.

Wow. I've always been excited for these, but some of the other samples (as someone mentioned probably due to compression?) just didn't do it for me the way these did. Awesome job! Keep it up!

Do we know when we get a poster? We're like... four and a half months until launch? And as far as I know, no poster.

In a larger sense, I'm curious about the marketing and the hype machine. Anyone here have any thoughts on that? I thought it would have been in a far greater force by now. I guess... It seems kind of muted (if that's the right word?). I know toys come out in the beginning of September, so are they waiting for that? Or they consciously trying to avoid burning people out by doing too much? Just wondering what people think

Loving the updates. I'm sure you guys hear it a lot, but it's worth repeating: thank you so much for the work you're putting in. I have been following this project for years, and I cannot wait to it all come to fruition. I don't comment a lot, but I'm sure I speak for a large number of other similarly silent observers that I know are just as excited as I am. Keep up the great work

I've seen some mixed thoughts on Poe's X-Wing color scheme, but personally I'm a big fan of it. I was also immediately most interested in the guy in the middle of this picture: http://i.imgur.com/wD6dUoX.jpg thinking that maybe it was some new and or important person. Anyone have thoughts on that? However, it may not be that special, as some people are thinking it is merely this guy: http://www.starwars7news.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Jakku-BTS.jpg

I'm pretty sure that the guy you're referring to in the last link is just Finn in disguise.

It also interesting how Phasma doesn't have a textured head under the helmet. We already know who plays the character, so why bother making it a mystery. Makes you wonder if there's something special going on about Phasma.

(I also posted some of these pictures on the forum about a week ago;
http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/THE-FORCE-AWAKENS-Episode-VII-Discussion-SPOILER-THREAD-See-OP-For-Trailer-Links/topic/16649/page/143/)

Damn, didn't see that. My bad, I normally follow this thread pretty closely. Do you have a particular reason you think it's Finn in disguise? That thought hadn't occurred to me

Full panel in excellent quality is available online.

Alright, well let's dive in. Just from my one quick viewing, the biggest takeaway I had was that it seems as if the website someone posted here a bit ago that collected all the spoilers into one clickable plot timeline seems pretty darn accurate. That site had the movie split into three acts, and I only read through the first two, but from what I read in those two, a lot of this footage seems to match up.

If those rumors are indeed that reliable, then I do have side somewhat with the people who are skeptical that this all revolves around finding Luke’s old lightsaber. If that is the case, it is inherently neither here nor there, but how it is pulled off (without making it feel like a MacGuffin) will be a very tricky balance to find.

However, I always give the benefit of the doubt until I am proven wrong, so all aboard the hype train with me, choo choo.

Other noteworthy bits: we get a glimpse of costumed Leia, and seeing Han sit down in the Millennium Falcon's pilot seat again was pretty cool.

Andy Serkis' role in TFA has now officially been confirmed. He will be playing a  character named Supreme Leader Snoke (click image for larger view).

So I'm guessing then that this "Supreme" leader Snoke might be the guy addressing the First Order rally that we saw in the trailer.

But if he's a motion-capture character then it's safe to assume that he's some kind of alien. I find that a pretty fascinating departure from the Empire that we know from the OT. The Empire pretty much consisted entirely of white men, which fitted well with the allusions to Nazism, colonialism and fascism in general. However now we have a supreme leader that's a non-human and Captain Phasma, who's clearly a very important military figure, is a woman. This is a very big departure from what we know. So the First Order is clearly quite different from the Empire that we saw thirty years ago.

(Also is a fascist regime without any form of racial or gender discrimination a form of social commentary on anything? The Empire were like a mix of Nazis and the British empire, so what would the First Order be an allusion to?)

In the 4k version of that shot, it seemed fairly clear that the figure was a regular human, which makes the mo-cap character an unlikely candidate.

In that possible-plot slideshow that was linked earlier, it sure sounded like Snoke (whose name wasn't known at the time) was a shadowy figure. So many involved in The First Order may not even know who's running the show: snoke & mirrors

Wait, just to make sure, by 4k version, you mean the still images they released, right? There isn't a 4k version of the trailer floating around, is there?

Full interactive compilation of the currently rumored plot elements.  (a more organized and easier to read version than my previous post about this)

http://spoilerboard.blogspot.de/2015/05/welcome-to-star-wars-force-awakens.html?m=1

Most of this sounds pretty amazing to me, I didn't ready any of the two versions of Act III to avoid potentially spoiling the ending, but the first two acts seemed pretty interesting. If this turns out to be true then they're going for a much more simple and "calmer" narrative, which I personally welcome after the messy and frantic plots of the PT (ROTS especially, I mean that entire film was just one long climax with breaks). It also sounds very similar to ANH's plot structure. It has the characters, and therefore also us the audience, gradually getting to explore the universe of the film. I really hope that most of this is what the final film will actually be like.

I also liked the stuff with Maz Kanata. If it turns out to be true then it might piss of some SW purists, but I kind of liker the idea that they might have expanded on the nature of the force. Of course the title already kind of suggested that they had, but I always felt that the PT played it a little bit to safe and just gave us stuff we'd already seen. The only thing they added was midichlorians, and that just sucked the magic out of it. This seems like a step back towards the more mystical and magical aspects of the force.

Agreed. I skipped all of Act III as well, but I liked what I read from Acts I and II. For what it's worth (probably not much), it was only the first two acts that high confidence percentages. Thanks for that link, emanswfan! That was well put together.

On the movie itself, I'm optimistic enough. I definitely err on the side of optimism though - I just like liking things way more than disliking them. We haven't seen what JJ can do with Star Wars, and again (optimism speaking), I'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt to see what he can do.

The Star Wars Screenthemes pack (SEE HERE) made some available in higher resolution, but even then, there are many holes that still exist. For example, THIS picture of Luke and Darth dueling is in the ROJ storybook, and is a famous image, but try as I might, I can’t find a digital version of it in good resolution. Does anyone know where they could be found (if at all)? Or have them themselves? Good resolution images not in the Screenthemes pack are out there, and I am curious as to where they may have come from.

Many questions to answer but I'll focus on this.

Firstly, all ScreenThemes pics are cropped, original images are wider/taller that have been cropped to 1600x1200. Also McQuarrie art from the Themes have been squished.

Secondly, LFL does have all promotional photos digitalized. They have had catalogs and probably still do which I also have where are thumbnails of most promo images (but still there are slight variations of the same set as could have taken a couple of photos and you can see a slight movement between them, and also harder to find images that have not been touched up e.g. blaster bolt missing, lightsaber blades missing etc.). They could offer the catalogs to press/other media that wanted to use hires pics, and they would have to order them from LFL if they had the luxury to choose. There is the elusive Kodak Photo disc which has all these images in hires but haven't ever found it. Anyways, the only chance to get the original hires images is from press material, that's where they usually originate. "Unofficial" hires pics are scans of photos made outside LFL.

So, let me make sure I understand this all. Regarding Screenthemes, no matter what, it was cropped, and in the case of McQuarrie, it was also squished? I knew that McQuarrie was squished, but that's good to know that everything else has also been cropped.

Next, LFL has, yes, digitized all of the photos, but they are only available via a catalog? Is this catalog digital or in print? And, have you seen the catalog? I'm not quite sure if you were implying that or not. So then, if a big media company, say Time Magazine for example, wants one, they can order it directly from LFL? But us commoners are out of luck?

Finally, this Kodak disk.... Is there any info or any links to learn more about it? Sounds intriguing. Or do you have any other info about it?

Thanks for the info! And sorry for all the questions

That's exactly what they are. Tons of these (for all kinds of movies) can be found here: http://www.moviestillsdb.com/search?query=star+wars

But you need to buy download credits to actually download the full size versions.

Gah I love OT. Thanks for the help, I'm going to enjoy poking around that site.

Original Trilogy Promo(?) Pictures
Time

Hey all, I’ve been pondering this for a while, and recently started looking into it again. In short, what is the story behind the “iconic” still images from the OT? (You’ll know what I mean when you see them). EXAMPLE ALBUM HERE. I love the look and feel of these images, but as I started to go through the actual movies more closely, I realized that these pictures are most definitely not straight from the movie (the view out the window in the end shot from ESB is completely different, for example, and Darth and Obi-Wan don’t really duel in that position). Additionally, the lightsabers look very different from their film counterparts.

On a hunch, a memory from childhood, I just ordered each of the original films’ storybooks off of Amazon for a few bucks (here, here, and here). ROJ and ESB arrived today, and my memory did serve correctly – the books are filled with exactly these “type” of images. Talk about a trip down memory lane. Just for reference, in a quick count, there were about 70 different images in the ESB storybook, and 65 different ones in ROJ.

So I guess I come to this: as asked above, where and how did these images come about? Shot on set with an actual camera, and then edited later? And would I be correct in assuming they have essentially been promo images for the last forty years? Then, to follow up, are they available in higher res anywhere? I am quite the hoarder of hi-res Star Wars images, and while some seem to be obtainable (for example those in the album I linked to above), some simply elude me, even though I know I’ve seen them all over, whether it is in books or other merchandise.

Finally, the other idea I’ve toyed around with is taking actual screenshots from the movies themselves, and trying to imitate the look (just for fun + completion’s sake). If I had to use a word to describe the feel of these images, I guess the word would be dreamlike? Glow-y? Ethereal? They have a very unique style, and I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to imitate it. I’ve only played around a little bit, but a combo I discovered was using the “Glow” + “Soften Portrait” options in Paint.NET to achieve a *somewhat* similar look (although that may be generous). Maybe I should also add some grain? EXAMPLE 1, EXAMPLE 2.

Anyway, I’m interested to hear what people know about them.

NSP's Empire Strikes Back: Despecialized CC w/ Grindhouse (BD9, BD25) (Released)

So I see this on the Spleen, and am trying to pin down the above messages. I too thought this was going to be the Grindhouse version, with essentially the Despecialized colors. But it sounds like.... this is still the Despecialized video with the colors slightly altered based on the Grindhouse colors? Is that correct?
