Who else turns the volume up when they know the Sando aqua monster scene is coming?
Who else turns the volume up when they know the Sando aqua monster scene is coming?
I’ve read that the 1080p blu-ray discs included in the 4k boxed set as well as the individual 4K releases were the new scan, but the individual 1080p discs are now just the old blu-rays repackaged with the new covers. Is this true?
I think even the new D+ streaming versions are a vast improvement over the old 1080p Complete Saga (2011) boxed set, but in my opinion, you need a decent 4K TV with HDR as well as a 4K player with HDR to fully appreciate how good these new UHD discs look. I know some things certainly amount to personal preference, but I question what equipment some are looking at things on, and how their screens are calibrated.
Also, I’ve never gotten really great sound while streaming. The best sound by far is on the disc.
A lot of the technical stuff on this site is beyond me, but as someone who hates the special edition changes, I’ll just say for me to love these new discs as much as I do is saying something.
I was social distancing way before covid. I love the theater, but I’ll stick with streaming at home for the foreseeable future. Fitting that The Rise of Skywalker was the last movie I saw in a theater. Never got groceries delivered before, but it doesn’t cost much at all. Totally worth it and I will continue to do it even after covid is gone.
What ever became of the movement to make “Jedi” a choice for religion on the census? Wasn’t that actually accepted somewhere?

Maybe Apple will buy Disney and fix it all. 😄

Nexus 6?

So what’s the verdict on purchasing something like the above? Frowned upon? I only have a chromebook. Some of us do not have the means and/or ability to download some of the projects talked about here. Does the wording above somewhat legitimize it or not?
Interesting that they can sell 4K80 even before it’s been finished or released! Maybe I should buy a copy to see how it turns out.
Spaceballs the Videotape!
Oops. I went back and looked again. This is what it says:
“Since I do not own the content on the discs, I cannot sell them. If you would like the 6 discs included, please send a message and I’ll gladly include them FREE. Again, to be clear, I’m selling the artwork & cases for these. If you would like the discs included, they will be added for FREE. I’m just a one man operation, so the cost is to cover materials & time spent putting these together. I lovingly recreated the artwork of the original CBS FOX VHS releases in the format of these 2-sided Criterion size cover art inserts & had the artwork professionally printed on the same stock as normal studio blu-ray insert art.”
Disc 1. Star Wars: Project 4K77 (DNR Version, 1080p) - blu-ray (BD25)
Disc 2. Star Wars: Harmy’s Despecialized Edition v.2.7 - blu-ray (w/Bonus Features BD50)
Disc 3. The Empire Strikes Back: Harmy’s Despecialized Edition v.2.0 - blu-ray (w/Bonus Features BD50)
Disc 4. The Empire Strikes Back: TN1 35mm “grindhouse” scan (has not been cleaned up or had DNR applied) 1080p blu-ray (BD-25)
Disc 5. Return of the Jedi: Project 4K83 (DNR Version, 1080p) - blu-ray (BD25)
Disc 6. Return of the Jedi: Harmy’s Despecialized Edition v.2.5 - blu-ray (w/Bonus Features BD50)
I remember being excited for the special editions to hut theaters. I think the suppression of the unaltered versions causes more distaste for the changes. People like having a choice. They may even be receptive of even greater changes if given the ability to still easily choose the unaltered versions.
Blade Runner: the Final Cut is my preferred version, but if the theatrical version with the narration was impossible to find, you better believe I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it.
This is probably blasphemy in these parts, but I’d be up for special edition versions of the entire Star Wars catalog, including the made for TV Ewok movies, if only the original versions were also released, in comparable quality. Imagine if the special effects in the prequels were updated to current standards?
Return of the Jedi
The Rise of Skywalker
Revenge of the Sith
Thor: Ragnarok
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The Bourne Ultimatum
Die Hard with a Vengeance
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Return of the King
Back to the Future III
Goldfinger
Skyfall
Mission: Impossible III
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1
Star Trek Beyond
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Rocky III
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
Ocean’s Thirteen
Chasing Amy
The World’s End
Another Thin Man
My list needs updating.
There are likely those who grew up with the prequels who wouldn’t be fans of Star Wars otherwise. The Original Trilogy has earned a place in history but the continued popularity of the Star Wars franchise is in how it connects with the next generation. The sequels and The Mandalorian are now part of that too. The originals by themselves would not carry the franchise into the future. I don’t think it is possible to recreate what was in 1977, so Star Wars must evolve. So embrace the new because it is an extension of the old we love so dear.
Don’t want to waste too many keystrokes on this film so I will summarize my thoughts in one sentence. I can’t believe that we got a Star Wars movie that crossed over into the “so bad it’s good” category, but this film achieved it.
Holiday Special? Ewok movies?
I think constantly striving to improve on things is great for fans and everyone involved, but at some point you have to stop and smell the roses and recognize just how far watching Star Wars at home has come.
When I was a kid, I had an old 32" CRT connected via RCA plugs to an old boom box with detachable speakers with a VHS I recorded off HBO and in my mind I was ready for Robin Leach to feature me on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. I had it all.
I never dreamed what would be available in the future. Now I have a 65" with HDR and full-array dimming, a 4K player with Dolby Vision, and 5.1 surround sound (working toward Atmos).
To think back at what I used to watch and was so happy with puts it all in perspective. I have my Harmy 1080p discs for when I just don’t want to see the special edition changes, and the new 4K UHD discs for when I want to see the highest resolution and HDR.
Sure, the best would be 4K Harmy with HDR, and maybe we’ll get that next, but in my opinion we’ve come a long way, and things keep getting better. I don’t think the perfect release for all-time is achievable, so I’m just appreciating what I have now while anticipating what might be next.
I saw a set of blu-ray cases on eBay said to be modeled after the old CBS/FOX VHS covers with original movie poster art. It said the price was for the cases only, but they would include 4k77, 4K80, and 4K83 free of charge (since it is illegal to charge for them) if you send a message asking for them to be included.
I don’t think it is possible for anyone to ever release any sort of restoration on any part of the Original Trilogy that wont immediately be regarded as inferior to what is actually desired.
I love Star Wars so much, I can never get enough. I get online to find other fans to share in the joy, but I keep getting caught up in a constant flow of negativity and hate to the point it starts to detract from that joy. I distance myself from forums, social media, and such, and find myself enjoying Star Wars much more again. Enjoying it so much in fact that I am compelled to get online and talk with other people…
I’d follow the same story exactly, but as an animated series.
Time to cue up an old classic in celebration!

Also, I don’t think Luke was on Ahch-To for 30 years.
I’ve always called it Star Wars from the beginning and I just can’t break from it. A New Hope just sounds strange to me. I don’t even think about it. It’s just Star Wars to me.
Only after the criticism do people realize how good the prequels actually are.
There is a whole generation that is growing up with the sequels. Soon they’ll be online talking about how much those movies mean to them and how they kinda like the other six that came before, but the sequels are the best.
I just wasn’t ready for the prequels back then. They caught me off guard. When they were first released, I was mixed on them. I saw so much I liked, but also a whole lot I didn’t. Combine that with the ongoing special edition changes and I thought Star Wars was going in a direction I just didn’t like. I didn’t want more Jar Jar style humor and cgi clone troopers.
Fast forward to now and Star Wars is very much different. My advice to anyone who doesn’t like the current flavor of Star Wars is to just wait. The prequels were a product of their unique time, and so are the current movies. Each generation will likely put their own stamp on Star Wars. The things that used to bother me simply don’t anymore, because now I know they aren’t the way of things forever. This makes the variety not only tolerable, but enjoyable.
It’s never going to be like the Original Trilogy again. In a way, I sort of like that. I’m among the few who got to grow up with those movies and continue on with where we are today. Now Star Wars is so many things at once. I honestly like it all. Some parts more than others, but I like it all nonetheless.
I can’t wait to see what comes next. Looks like the focus will be Disney+ series. Judging from the first season of The Mandalorian, I will like that very much.
