Info: MagnoliaFan's "a Pre-ANH" - some details please? (Released)
Time
My baby is still in the hospital but doing very well!!!

I'm gonna be heading ov there in a few minutes but I was browsing the forum and this topic keeps popping up....

MagnoliaFan from the information I've gathered has...

- used the DVD (meaning a LD transfer) as one of the sources.

- then I believe that he also used the VHS and a few other sources for the sound

- I only have a PROTOTYPE at this time and the video is near full DVD for the video and the sound was a wonderful transfer with the 'missing' dialogue.

- I hope to have a copy some time this coming week for a better review but based on the prototype - I'd say it's another MagnoliaFan hit.

Magnolifan - If I incorrectly posted any information please let me know and I will correct it ASAP!! (well in a day or so )

AGAIN THIS IS NOT A RE-EDIT or anything like that..........

- MagnoliaFan has taken all the above information that has been collected of the last "only the Maker" knows how long they've been collecting that information - BUT since this information was collected MagnoliaFan (a VERY wonderful and dedicated fan) has taken it upon himself to do his best to RECREATE the original PRE-ANH VHS on DVD - JUST an update to the original - THERE ARE NO ADDED SCENES OR FOOTAGE IN THIS VERSION - (there never was any footage CUT from the original film as it first showed there were only additions - The audio was changed in succesive releasses as the Ben Burtt keeped improving the quality of the audio in each of these succesive releases.

For those of you who did not read the 'The Edits and DVDr releases thread' -

STAR WARS: The True Theatrical Version
- NO Known DVDr version to date, some VHS have surfaced but the quailty is suspect

Pre- A New Hope - From "Star Wars" to "A New Hope":

The reissue of "Star Wars" that ran for three weeks starting on Wednesday, August 15, 1979, DID NOT contain the "Episode IV: A NEW HOPE" subtitle. A trailer for "Empire" was shown, however, and a Kenner toys discount booklet was given out (both of which are announced on the poster for the reissue).

The first appearance of "Episode IV: A NEW HOPE" was on the new prints struck for the two-week reissue of "Star Wars" on April 10,1981, nearly one year after the premiere of "Empire." By the way, when the subtitle was added, the roll-up itself was changed. Lines of text were condensed differently so the length of the roll-up remained the same despite the addition of two lines at the top. The capitalized words DEATH STAR appear on one line in the first version and are broken on the revised version.

For the record, "Empire" was reissued later that year, on July 31, 1981. In 1982, "Star Wars" returned on April 10 and "Empire" on November 19.Both of these reissues featured identical "Revenge of the Jedi" trailers.

Floating around the black market limbo of sci-fi conventions and fanboy heaven is a forgotten bootleg of "Star Wars," a film transfer of the original 1977 theatrical release. It's interesting mainly as a curiosity, because the transfer is awful, the image is cropped poorly, and I'm sure that we all have much better, legal copies lying around. Nevertheless, as an account of the minor changes made to "Star Wars" over the years, it's priceless.

Following is a list of differences -

*Video differences:

First, the tape isn't really panned and scanned. It's panned all right, but not scanned--the picture just sits on the center of the widescreen frame. The only video difference I could find was in the opening scroll. Not only was the "Episode IV: A New Hope" tag missing,
but the lines were formatted differently.

Laserdisc reads:

Episode IV
A NEW HOPE

It is a period of civil war.
Rebel spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have won
their first victory against
the evil Galactic Empire.

During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal secret
plans to the Empire's
ultimate weapon, the DEATH
STAR, an armored space
station with enough power to
destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by the Empire's
sinister agents, Princess
Leia races home aboard her
starship, custodian of the
stolen plans that can save
her people and restore
freedom to the galaxy . . . .

Pre-ANH reads:

It is a period of civil war.
Rebel spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have
won their first victory
against the evil Galactic
Empire.

During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal
secret plans to the Empire's

The KNOWN *Audio differences:

The nine 70mm prints contained a 6-track Dolby mix that was considered unfinished. When the properly cut prints were made, both 70mm and 35mm, they went into wide release accompanied by finished soundtracks. BUT, Dolby Stereo prints of the time were not mono-compatible as they are now, so sound designer Ben Burtt created a totally different monaural sound mix for 35mm, knowing that there were not many stereo theaters at the time. In my experience, this mix got its widest exposure during the "extended first run," which is erroneously (though widely) referred to as the "1978 reissue." The "Story of Star Wars" narration record was made using this different sound mix (with stereo sound effects laid over it); in it one can hear some of these differences. The echo at the chasm is only on the stereo mix, by the way, and it must be played back in stereo in order for it to be heard. It cannot even be heard on a Dolby print played in a mono theater or on a laserdisc played over a mono television monitor.

Threepio's lines ("The tractor beam is coupled...") were added back into the home video sound master in 1986. For the recent boxed set laserdisc, a new soundtrack was created for ANH, incorporating all of the above. Oddly enough, Threepio's lines were left out once again!

1) Alarms and klaxons are different.

2) Added panel sound effects aboard the Falcon, including a descending whine as they come out of hyperspace.

3) The communications to Tarkin via comlink are completely different.

4) When Threepio and Artoo are hiding from the Imperials on Tatooine, the stormtroopers dubbed voice is different, and so is the line:

Laserdisc:
"All right, check this side of the street. The doors locked. Move on to the next one."

Pre-ANH video:
"All right, check that side of the street. It's secure. Move on to the next one."

5) A different actress dubs for Aunt Beru. Neither version features the real voice of actress Shelagh Fraser, who has a thick British accent.

6) Some Threepio dialogue uses different takes. The additional lines ("The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations. A power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave....") are

That's the actual MPEG, but only a segment. I'll just have to adjust the colors for the compression. The capture itself is the important part.

Laserman, I can't get Vegas to recognize the huffy AVI (only the audio is recognized.) I'll search the Sony forums, but it looks like I'm resigned to RGB (which still looks awesome, but there's absolutely no compression.), unless Vegas will recognize the Alparysoft codec (I'll try it later.)

Still VERY impreesive - DUDE my dual layer capture is WEAK compaired to this - I'm really looking forward to watching your set in their full 7 hours of Glory (dinner/rest room breaks )

I'm gettin' giddy!!

Nah, such a thing could never be done."

I wouldn't know where to begin with player-titles, but cutting out particular scenes wouldn't be hard.

"Mebejedi, what software are you using to capture. If you use the lossless codec I mentioned, your file will be less than half its current size, and it can capture and playback in realtime no worries."

I'm using the capture program that comes with Sony Vegas. If I can't find a setting for altering the fields upon capture, then I'll try using AMcap, since I know I can specify which codec to use (the Alparysoft one you mentioned earlier.) Like I said, I have to recapture anyways (the key scene I'm trying to improve is when the SD flies overhead. If I brighten the scene to bring out the stars, then the bottom of the SD gets washed-out. It's a little thing, but I'd like to make it look as best as possible.)

I tried a program called AVI-IO, but got too many dropped frames (although I got 12 overall with Vegas.)

"I know someone awhile back was looking at getting dutch subtitles. I am interested in french subtitles. Can anyone help?"

Well, someone who knows Dutch or French would have to translate the films first. After that, it's all cutting and pasting.

Okay, here are my new captures. Tell me how I'm doing so far. I got VirtualDub to work (though I can still only capture in RGB.)

From my AVI

From my MPEG (with bottom field, and deinterlaced)

BTW, do my colors look better now?

LOOKING DAMN GREAT!!!!!

The picture looks a little soft in the last few pictures on the bottom - DON'T get me wrong but the interlaed picture the Star Destroyer seems to have a bit more detail...

AND YES!!

Those colors are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't the Ghost Jedis have a bluish tint too? Maybe this change was made not to confuse the audience... I think it's the first time in the OT that we see a life size hologram. Maybe in the ROTJ time era, technology has improved and the holograms are better; we have already seen better technical displays: the Death Star II plans hologram.

Yep - R2 got a new hologram emitter after Luke thought it would REALLY impress Jabba to see him in full color

Start up Word so it's on a new blank page.

click on File, and then Page Setup, click Paper Size and tick the Landscape box, press OK.

now click on File, then Page Setup, and click on Margins. adjust the margins to 3mm on all sides - this will fit even the 4-disc dvd covers.

click on Insert (top row of commands), and then Picture - scroll onto and click 'From File' - search for the pic you wish to print (or save in word format). Once you've found it click Insert, wait a few seconds for it to copy itself over and then click on File, and then Save As... or Print Preview or whatever you are gonna do to it.

oojason.........

YOUR MY HERO!!

I figured that it was something like that - I tried to figer it out but said screw it and just used Photshop and my HP880c.

But I wanted a faster way that I could just walk into a print shop and have them printed with a LASERJET WITHOUT having to request them to process a JPG or a PSD

Again THANKS!!

To keep my ebay account if nothing else. If you don't want your covers on the CD Rik just say and I'll take them off.

- You can keep them on iit I was just curious
