I hate how EU explanations over-think everything and are generally stupid.

That's a good point. I remember something in the script mentioning that the lightsabre was heavier than Luke expected when he first ignited it.
In a real duel, I would think sword-fighting could be quite fast. The sabre fight between Obi-Wan and Darth Anakin in Episode III was shot at normal speed. That's probably a bit faster than a normal duel, but if two people who are really good at sword-fighting go up against each other I would be surprised if they fought as slowly as in the OT.
January 15:
588 B.C.: Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon lays siege to Jerusalem. The siege continues until July 23, 586 B.C.
A.D. 69: Otho claims the title of Emperor and rules for three months.
A.D. 1535: King Henry VIII declares himself head of the Church of England.
Finally, a day with some interesting history.

I wonder what Twister is up to--my game with her isn't going very far right now.Sumimasen.
I have to apologize for my absence from the game. If I knew you on some alternative site I would've updated you as to why it would be a while for me to make the next move. Essentially the reason I was taking a break from visiting this site is that I got a security warning. Thing is I practice very safe on-line browsing. It's to the point where it's instinctual and I just do it. Thus when I get a warning of suspicious activity on an internet site it's very difficult for me to fight that instinct and visit again. Combine that with the thread being created of a "minor security breach" before that and if it wasn't for the people I interact with here I would've left this site and never returned. I did pop in a few times to the main forum index but that was primarily out of accident since I've got this site listed under my bookmarks.
All that said, I can only apologize and give you my word that within 48 hours I'll be prepared to visit this site often again and thus continue the game with you.
I am most sorry for the delay. Lo siento. Je désolé. qaQoS.
No problem, glad to see you back.

No worries buddy. Out of curiosity, how old are you?
I'm fourteen.
I kind of gather that you are in high school, and if so, I'm impressed by your maturity.
Awww, thanks :D
I mean it :)
Well, I appreciate it. :)
Anyway, sounds like a plan. I'm glad you're open to these variants and are willing to try this again. I'm not as familiar with this as regular shogi, so I don't have much strategy to offer.
I'll do my best. N-4d

From what I've seen, the knight seems to be a far more valuable piece in the early game then in regular Shogi. I think one of my biggest problems with the small variants will be using my normally weaker pieces effectively and not worrying so much about the bishop and rook.
You know, I'm learning the same thing as we go. The knight can be kind of devastating against the other pieces in such close quarters when used properly.

Ah, of course. Yes, I would tend to agree with you then.
Excuse my ignorance, but what does "TOTJ" stand for?

Watch, his 30,000th post will read "..0" in the 30,000 countdown thread. I expect something anticlimactic.

Well, I was kind of hoping that people would mention alternate story lines they think should have been used and stuff like that. I don't really care about hearing about the details as they have been mentioned many times and fixed in various fanedits. I'm looking for things that can't be changed, like things from "I wish Darth Vader's mask looked like the original McQuarrie artwork" to "I think Luke and Leia should have been unrelated because..." to "I think the rebel base in ESB should have been on Dagobah and Yoda should have found Luke and trained him there."*
Disclaimer: Those are all just EXAMPLES. I don't agree with any of those, so those of you who don't catch on very quick, please don't criticize them.
Hmm...I'm not sure. I think the reason I did poorly is partly due to the fact that I'm looking at Japanese pieces and my awareness of the board isn't as good as it would be were I looking at western pieces. I say we play another game since that went really quickly and I would like a bit more practice with it.
I'll let you make the first move this time so I'll be able to learn from your strategy...
Sorry, I thought I had posted this before I left home, so sorry I kept you waiting.
It would suck if anyone on this forum died because we wouldn't know what happened (we might suspect something if a normally active member suddenly stopped posting without warning, but some people disappear without warning for a while and come back--e.g. TheBoost) unless they personally knew other members of this site.

Ah, I see. I see now that I forgot to mention where the promotion zone is. Let me give you a pointer for future reference. Notice that on most shogi boards there are four dots at the intersections of the grid lines. Those dots represent the promotion zone. If you pass the dots, you're in the zone.
OK, that makes sense.

I think Han believed in the Force by then. He knew what a Jedi Knight was and believed that Luke was one when Chewie told him.
In ROTJ though, he wasn't bright enough to realize that he it was Luke who levitated him...I don't know, sometimes he's smart, but other times he just seems a bit slow.
I suppose having viewed it in context of the prequels, I had come to regard C-3PO as being somewhat of a dimwit by the time I got to Episode IV, and never really thought he might be doing something deliberately clever.
But 3PO's not that clever. He blabs all kinds of things he shouldn't and doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut.
Yeah, Leia even says "There's no time for sorrows Commander", which seems like a bit of an underreaction to the fact that she lost her parents, her friends, her planet, her dog, etc. forever in a quick second. It's not as if her house burned down, she lost just about everything for goodness sake!
The Railroad Tycoon board game is a lot of fun to play. It isn't too complex, but you really have to plan ahead if you want to get anywhere.
To be dishonest, I agree with you.
It's interesting how Chu Shogi (played on a 12x12 board) was once considered a medium-sized game of Shogi. Now what we call Shogi is played on a 9x9 board and there are variants as small as 3x3. There are variants as large as 25x25, if not bigger, but those are far less common than small games.
My move is simply P-6d
I didn't realize that pieces promoted upon reaching the second last line and thought they had to reach the end of the board before doing so. If I had known, I probably would have been a bit more wary of your rook.

How did that merit a double facepalm?
Fast LS duels are one of the many flaws with the PT, slow and talky LS duels are exactly what is right with the OT.
So it's not only, not a flaw but it's actually a highlight, hence the double nature of that facepalm.
(I was joking as well)
but on the topic...
Lucas made the first half of ANH slow as hell on purpose because he didn't think people would be able to follow the story. We all had no problem and loved the film so it's a shame he wasn't more bold and cut out about 15 minutes from the start (All the time spent on Tatooine) and used that extra quarter hour adventuring aboard the Death Star with Leia.
I'd kill for an extra 15 minutes of Leia bickering with Han, Leia insulting Chewbacca, Leia shooting stormtroopers, Leia talking all over Luke and generally shouting orders and being badass.
Personally I don't have a problem with fast sabre fights, as long as they're done a certain way. They need to be interspersed with dialogue, emotional, and economic (as in not wasting energy jumping over people's heads, flipping, spinning, etc.). If it is done so that it isn't eye candy, then I'm all for it.
