Hey guys
Where can I find the non dnr Version?
Searching a few times, but can’t find it and the Usenet Files are Offline.
Can someone help? The Bluray DNR Version are very bad 😦

Thanx a lot

The current Director’s Cut Blu-ray disc release for STAR TREK II: The Wrath of Khan is still the best looking out of the TOS films since it received a full 4K restoration. Original color timing too.

Needs a 4K remaster. Especially with both video and audio being low bitrates. Could look and sound even better.

I was sure the LD had a different color grading; lately, another member did a capture and discover that it is identical to DVD, so at the moment there are two official gradings, LD/DVD/HDTV (open matte, don’t know if exists an OAR version) and BD/HD DVD.

The LD/DVD/HDTV is original (At least the 1999 DVD) and DVD (newer)/BD/HD-DVDbut ths the revised. Already mentioned the current BD/HD DVD doesn’t have very good compression. Would be nice to have a 4K scan with both color timings. Would WB do it? My guess is they’d release other movies first before getting around to it.
My take is the BD is the best video source for current color timing and the HDTV, even though
it’s open matte and better compression (details), for OG color timing. Take note LD and DVD both have lower color space compared to UHD/BD/HD DVD. I even own certain releases of titles from two separate countries and companies with wildly differing color timing.

(i.e. Mona Lisa. The USA Image Entertainment uses a vastly outdated transfer, is a much older release, while the newer UK ARROW Video disc is a brand new glorious 4K scan. Proper color, compression, and film grain retention.

A better example would be another stylized science fiction or action film which received a full remaster compared to what the drama received above. Of course if a film has more than one official cut, said cuts need to be directly compared to each other if they vary in terms of color timing.

YMMV.

Info Wanted: 'Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia' - UK sound?
Time

PNG is superior to JPG since the former is lossless with better compression and the latter has more artifacting. So for image comparisons, PNG should always be the option clicked on regarding Caps-a-Holic.com

I wouldn’t fully trust Amazon UK reviews. Better to browse various forums regarding the video and audio side in specific threads. Seems to me that person who left the review is a Twilight Time fanboy. More research needed though. (See if DVDBeaver mentions anything. Same goes for Blu-ray.com forum, AVS, HiDefDigest.)
I dunno, really.

I know all that, but it doesn’t seem to be the actual original 1999 color timing. I’ll ask the Cinémathèque what year their print is from.

One of the main reasons I’m still keeping the DVD released in '99. WB needs to give The Matrix a proper remaster anyway since the Blu-ray disc release, even the HD DVD too, uses a far older transfer. Random mention but I do own the video game THE MATRIX: Path of Neo for PC (IMO far superior to Reloaded and Revolutions) which also uses clips from the films. Really don’t remember what color timing those clips were in-game though, for the first film. Should be a video on Youtube from someone either making a custom cutscene compilation or playthrough.
Maybe color matching?

Okay, so I just got back from a 35mm screening of “The Matrix” in the French Cinémathèque in Paris, France. It had French subtitles and I am not aware of any rerelease of the movie, so it was most likely a print from 1999. And I was shocked to see that the Blu-ray is actually not that far from being alike in terms of color grading. It’s not accurate in every part, that’s for sure, but man, the 1st color grading we’ve seen on video back in the day is dead wrong, and it was not the same as the 35mm scan released by our pals here either. Some parts looked alike, that’s for sure, but the Blu-ray also in other parts. And when toying with the color temperature on my TV screen from medium to warm and sometimes the other way around, I manage to closer match the Blu-ray with what I’ve just seen in 35mm.

The HDTV for the screencap is the original cinematic color timing. The Blu-ray is the revised one which matches the sequels.

One, use Caps-a-Holic.com with PNG clicked along with full-screen comparisons to check. Twilight Time usually has shite compression so I’d automatically use Arrow instead.
Two, both appear to be the original audio. Twilight Time (Re-release) uses lossless DTS-HD Master Audio at 48kHz, 24-bit and the UK Arrow uses uncompressed LPCM at 48kHz, 24-bit.
Three, I don’t really think it needs it but other Sam Peckinpah movies should. (Great or adequate HD video with film grain perhaps on The Getaway and The Wild Bunch but with uncompressed Laserdisc audio.)
Four, the Limited Edition is currently on sale on Arrow Shop for only £12.99/$16.83. https://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/shop/index.php?route=product/product&keyword=Bring &product_id=887
(IMO Twilight Time aren’t worth it to own at all.)
Five, best to focus on titles which have far less than adequate Blu-ray disc releases from around the planet. i.e. the aforementioned Sam Peckinpah titles.

I’d love to see an HD (1080i/p) preserved 2-Disc custom BD25s for both uncensored cuts of Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. 2005 Special Edition (115:08) and the 1988 Turner Preview Version (121:28). Maybe even a Theatrical Cut reconstruction too on a BD25. BUT my guess is Warner Archive will eventually release an awesome pressed Blu-ray disc for it.

@dvdmike, maybe. But there’s just something else, watching a film print. It’s like getting transported back in time. An experience, that you won’t get from watching clean digitised video.

Anyway, the print has been sold, so that’s that.

I’m not DVDMike but I’ve seen some awesome BD and UHD releases which have received painstaking 4K and greater remasters which preserves all film grain including original color timing. Why would I want to watch a worn print? I’d rather feel as though I’ve been transported in time seeing the film in pristine condition within the first few days of release.

Quantum Leap: Complete Series with ALL of the Original Music Restored Project. (a WIP)
Time

This is awesome and I still only have the DVDs, R1 DVD for Season 1, 4 & 5 along with R2 UK for S2 & S3. No doubt I figured the Mill Creek would have great video but it’s lacking subtitles of any sort and the aforementioned few missing songs.
Guess handbrake would be ideal to take MKVs of the episodes and add English srt files for the subtitles. I’d want both regular and SDH ones.

EDIT: DO NOT apply any DVNR or EE! Leave the film grain as-is!

No chance for just an Extended Edition which would essentially be the longest running time cut without the unneeded George Lucas-esque tinkering?
Guess not.

It won’t be possible to do this edit without some tinkering. I will not be adding any dinosaurs or anything like that. If I do something it will not be in bad taste. That wormhole animation is basically the same thing.

How do I extend the footage using the deleted scenes of the gate opening for the second time without doing some tinkering?

It just won’t work without it… I am going to go for updating some special effects mattes I won’the be touching anything else. I want to have fun and learn something in the process.

I think the animation is a nice update and it is not radically different. Extending the footage is very radical and requires a lot of tinkering and far more work.

Should I add the staff weapon effects missing in the special edition?

Is that tinkering because they put the footage in without bothering to finish the effects?

There’s also a big effect missing for Caveman Ra’s abduction

I got the music sussed for extending entering the gate now but the sound effects need work. I will post a version soon and I think I discovered a music cue in the process. But I have also had to make it work…

Finishing effects as long as it looks similar to the current Blu-ray disc, in terms of quality negating resolution, is fine to me. Guess I’d consider it sorta similar to BLADE RUNNER: The Final Cut and STAR TREK: The Motion Picture - The Director’s Edition.

Walt Disney Classics - 4K (donations sought) (several WIPs)
Time

If this was more about the live-action compared to animated Walt Disney Pictures/Studios output, I’d’ve been way more interested. i.e. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Black Hole, etc.
Top priorities should be The Sword in the Stone and any other titles which were heavily DNR/EE for their Blu-ray disc releases. Leave the film grain! These movies should have the original cinematic logo before the film anyway.

I’ve read the UHD for this film is remastered but the Blu-ray disc still looks crap. HD DVD compared to the Blu-ray disc (Too much DNR/EE. KEEP the film grain!) is one to get.
BUT, if someone did do a 4K scan of this and made a custom BD25 or BD50, it’d be awesome. Honestly, I’ve no clue if the DTS-HD Master Audio is good on said BD since I’ve never had the chance to watch it.

I highly trust Nolan to do an excellent job with the full 4K resotration. Also gonna get the eventual UHD boxset of The Dark Knight Trilogy, which will obviously have the remastered BDs included.
This project is officially dead in the water now since it’s using the original released Blu-ray disc. Good effort while it still lasted.

But it will be kept uncensored and the details

Regarding BDRebuilder. (It’s an awesome program.)
All it does is reconfigure a dual layered Blu-ray disc down to single layer. It can also remove any unwanted audio and subtitle tracks. As I mentioned, only keeping the English audio, the commentary, and the English subtitles. Then making it an ISO to be burned out via IMGBurn.
THEN it’ll be the second disc with the offical USA Blu-ray disc release I own.
