here's a better comparison of the shots
gout on the top, frame below:
in our shots, the lighting might be off,
there's a lot of grain, and there is no
color correction...

These shots look so terrible on film because they were comp'd too many times resulting in an increased graininess and a much softer picture. Hence why they look super bad when Lucas wanted them smoothed over in the 90's to match surrounding shots better. For the special edition I *believe* they went back to the original film elements before being comp'd and did it digitally. A long story short; I don't think this shot needs to or even should look too much better, the fact that you've got it pretty much how it originally looked is great I think!
BTW if you wanted to post a clip or two some time I'd love to have a play with it in AVS and see what could be done with it. :)
Wow great news. I've never seen this version, but I'd love to see it once it's upped! Any chance on seeing this upped on Demonoid? Last year I watched the Coppla restorations in glorious HD on my telle and showed them to a friend of mine who had never seen them before! He loved the movies, I'm sured he'd love to see this version!! I was really impressed by the BD quality (my TV cust through the grain like butter so that was no issue).
WOW. Does he actually believe half the crap that he says?
If you look at Blade Runner, it’s been cut sixteen ways from Sunday and there are all kinds of different versions of it. Star Wars, there’s basically one version — it just keeps getting improved a little bit as we move forward.
Well if you look at Ridley Scott he hates making changes to his films. He only did Alien "Director's Cut" because they told him they were making an extended version for the Quadrilogy DVD and he didn't want that. Unlike Lucas he doesn't get to be the producer as well as the director; Lucas has no argument because he's the producer so he has the final say on the final cut of the thatrical version! He only made the Blade Runner "Final Cut" because it's what fans wanted; and all the changes were respectful. You didn't see him trying to replace all the repeated elements like the neon signs and those stupid pillars that give away to a vgetran audience that all they did to make a "new street" was move around the objects on it! You don't suddenly have Zora shooting first because Harrison Ford isn't a "cold blooded killer". Oh and by the way, they released all 5 versions including the Workprint that was never originally intended for public distribution and only existed to the public through illegal trading of bootlegs!!!!
Plus, Scott has made soooo many more good movies than Lucas did.
Maybe he can improve Indy 4 for us by inserting imperial stormtroopers riding dewbacks?

A long way around to answer your question. No changes of the magnitude you mention were made to Return of the Jedi. C3PO was always floated around by Luke using the force to fool the Ewoks into fearing him and obeying his command to release his friends.
Not necessarily. ROTJ is a long movie - 2hrs and 13 minutes. Maybe that particular theatre cut 13 minutes out of the movie so they could get an extra screening in each day?
Cause SW has so many Matte paintings, half or more of them were mediocre quality at best so Lucas could use them just for a single shot! Remember, Matte paintings weren't exactly cheap or easy to produce, and Lucas chose quantity over quality. Why he doesn't change it is the same as asking why not update the vector graphics used for the death star plans...
Yet despite using probably dozens of different Matte paintings he used the same shots of tie fighters and x-wings over and over and over - like it's too difficuilt to make more!
Not that he should fix anything, he should leave them alone.
Nice. I've matched them with GOUT frames (as best as I could do anyway)...
Later...
Nice pics -1. The cropping seems fairly consitant throughout (obviously with shot-by-shot ajustments for keeping the action center).
Never really stuck out to me. I mean, I know it's a change but not one worth using GOUT footage.
Well, that's there and it'll stay. Although there are these minor mistakes that most people wouldn't notice, I think it's the best way to do the shot - this way it's actually 100% HD. I think it was actually the hardest shot I've worked on.
I don't know how to use scripts and I'm not planning to learn. And I don't really mind it. There is a lot of blue walls like that that are actually original, so this one doesn't really bother me.
That's incorrect though. The single lines should appear on top and the second line should be bellow it. And I quite like my subs the way they are. That's interesting, I thought they should be on the bottom... why did you think they should be on the top?
Oh I could adapt the code in avisyth for the subtitles for you if you were interested.
"Power to destroy an entire planet" <--- there is a star between the A and N in "an" that gets carried with the text. There's another one between R and M in armored. "against the evil Galactic" <--- there's a star above A in Galactic. You have done an AMAZING job with the crawl. Only change I would like to see is a pan down to the GOUT version (keeping the stars as you've prserved them).
I'd also like to see the original version of Leia's hologram restored. When I did it in my version you could barely notice the quality difference between the 04 and the GOUT, and it should look equally as good for you!
I'll go through your version fully later for you, see if I notice anything else :)
Here's that blue wall I was talking about so you can see what I mean:
The blue is static, really, really awful distracting and ugly!
I'm very impressed with your version Harmy, I did find some things I didn't like - like the escape pod and the SE motion-blur that sticks out like dogs balls... and that shot with the stormtrooper and the bods in the speeder that has been "corrected" (with his shoulder-pad wavering).
I haven't gone through your whole movie yet, but just to let you know, check out 1:03:24 with the "blue wall" (I corrected this in my script) using this line:
SE04.t(91213,91277,"What a distracting blue wall!").tweak(10,-1,minsat=18,maxsat=150)
Okay, here's one scanned from the SW posters book.
BTW, I tried several image hosts, even the ones allowing up to 10MB pictures complained that the dimensions of the image were too big! ROFL. But I finally found one :) For some reason it did, however, recompress the image... 5.36MB --> 5.30MB (the difference is negliable though). All I've done to it is passed it through neat image; I'm going to try and "restore" it using a full poster scan to fill the missing area.
I believe this is a much better image than the last one.
The quality of this image is remarkable. Here's a comparison... pinkish one taken from a custom DVD cover (latest in thread), middle one taken from a filtered and modified photoshot of a poster from cinemamasterpeices, and the last one being this image (the latter two resized to match the pink DVD cover one). Notice it has more stars than any other image, and more fine detail. The black level, however, does loose much of vader's helmet. It's also the sharpest of the images (both the second two images were sharpened slightly in neat-image. When I get a chance I'll try and mege the two images....
Here's the one on cinemamasterpeices that I used, along with the modified version which is a WIP:
I am probably way off here, but I can't help but see this thread as being intended to be a bit of a gloat fest. It isn't like anyone who is actually obese is going to want to admit it to everyone, especially when the OP says he assumes probably 60-70% of us are overweight but makes certain to announce he isn't one of them.
My best friend is obese... he'd have to loose 40% of his body weight to be my weight. I'm sure he just thinks of himself as fat/bulky rather than obese.
That's true... it also has it at the top (a bit). I could start with a fresh image and do a much better clone-stamp than that of the base actually. Why'd you have to draw my attention to things I didn't want to see? ROFL. I'm not sure I could do it as well with any of the other images I have. Thanks for pointing that out though :)
dKO, I'm doing some color correction on ANH right now. I found a partially restored one that had pretty bad JPEG artifacts and really, really bad color:
(I have fixed that ugly green blob btw).
The correction is as non-invasive as I can make it. It should look 500% better than the pink version when done.
*drops jaw* ah crap, this is what I'm up against?? That looks so freaking good. About 1000% better than the 2006 official packaging.
AVP, could you possibly please upload just the pics of the posters exactly how you used them, but without any logos etc on them?
U are the greatest Mall, thanks bro.
Wow. I could so easily intigrate this into my project! DAMN YOU FOR MAKING MORE WORK FOR ME!!! ROFL
Very nice and thanks :) I will check it out a bit later (when I can be bothered to).
I did figure that out actually. Do you like how they solicit donations on their website? Oh and "YOU MUST OWN AN OFFICIALLY RELEASED VERSION TO LEGALLY WATCH A FANEDIT." Is that supposed to be legal advice? ROFL. If someone gets sued for dling a fanedit, they can say in court fanedit.org told me it was legal.
As a side-note many of the movies I dl that I don't own, if I like it I go and buy the DVD (or order it online). That's why I have like 300 DVD, lolz.
I'm actually trying to make covers, but I really have no idea what I'm doing so it's going to take a lot longer than I thought. HAHAHAHA.
Yes, but luky for Americans they actually aren't the fattest country in the world - Mexico is: they're just the most obese country in the world (probably not much better) with a 50:50 split between overweight and obese. That'd have to be the highest ratio of any county. CA/UK/AU/NZ all about 40% of overweights are obese - 60:40 split (canada exactly 60:40 by that chart anyway). Not posting your BMI bingowings?
I have a feeling that it'd be actually closer to 60-70% of ot.com pplz is overweight; on the basis that more fat people sit at their computers activly involved in forums all the time! ROFL
I actually like going on diets... since I'm not overweight I can go on really "loose" diets, such as the one I'm on right now: eat takeaway once a week. My favourite is no eating after 6PM, although I'm not on that one at the moment.
I actually should eat more protein though, so I should go back to my favourite bekky: 2x raw eggs, 1x glass of skim milk. I eat the eggs raw cause I'm too lazy to get up early enough to boil them, ROFL. (at the moment I have a s/w or a roll for my brekky) :)
^^That's not the o-neg, that's the master reels of film from which the prints and digitcal copies are made... the o-neg is the camera negative, that isn't directly put into the reels, in that video (for instance) they talk about finding the o-neg for the 4-eyed stormtropper shot, cleaning it and then scaning it for use (they could have just as easily scanned that shot from the movie reel and achieved the same result IMHO). The "Master" of the SE is probably compleatly digital and not a set of movie reels anyway, It's probably a 4K digital scan done for the 2004 release where they went through and found all the o-negs they could to splice it in (digitally) and make the film look better. In any case, the idea that he doesn't have a theatrical print or couldn't make one easily is rubbish, after all for the exception of a handful of scenes, every scene in the theatrical is in the SE, just some are altered.
Oh and back on topic - Lucas is so fat I can't believe anyone would defend that! new topic here :)
GET OFF MY LAWN!
Obesity and overweight factsheet on WHO:
Overweight and obesity are the fifth leading risk for global deaths. At least 2.8 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. In addition, 44% of the diabetes burden, 23% of the ischaemic heart disease burden and between 7% and 41% of certain cancer burdens are attributable to overweight and obesity.
