Could This Be True or Just An Elaborate Hoax? Something even worse than the Holiday Special?
Time
Galahad, well that is up to you. I wouldn't recomend it. My best friend, when it was over, was reduced to a twitching lump on the sofa with blood running out of her ears. It took me 45 minutes to revive her. I guess she still hasn't forgiven me for it.

If you do decide to have a special viewing with friends, I would tell them that you take no responsibility for any psychological or emotional scarring that may occur do to viewing the special. If they are hard core Star Wars fans, then I'd say you're pretty safe in letting them view it. Most will only want to see it once and believe me, once is enough for even the most ardant fans.

Could This Be True or Just An Elaborate Hoax? Something even worse than the Holiday Special?
Time
I found this a long time ago when I was researching the Holiday Special. For some reason this thing popped up and I just couldn't help but wonder if it was real or not. God I hope it is! I just love really bad TV and this sounds like a real stinker.

As a side note, one day I tortured my best friend with her first viewing of the Holiday Special and she hasn't spoken to me since. Hmmm...I think I may have seriously damaged our friendship or maybe her emotional stability. I did warn her that I took no responsibility for any physical, emotional or psychological damage. I guess she thought I was kidding.

Cringe Factor
Time
You know, I can take the fireside chat (as awful as it is), the fart joke in TPM, Jar Jar doing almost anything, even the midichlorians and virgin birth stuff over listening to Padame say, 'I'm not afraid to die. I've died a little bit each day since you came back into my life.' Just plain PHEW! There are no words to describe how horrible, horrible that line is. It was almost like Padame farted and the whole audience heard it. To this very day I want to ask Natalie Portman how on earth was she able to say that without laughing? Where are the bloopers for that line? You know they exist.

I've said it before. There I was in the theatre for the 2nd time that day and seeing AOTC for the second time. The Padame fart line happened and I lust looked at my best friend and said, 'Oh PHEW!' No one talks like that! I don't think that I've ever been more embarrassed for an actor than I am for Natalie Portman. To have said that and it's on film for all eternity.

Wait, I take that back. I was totally embarrassed for Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamil in the Holiday Special. Poor Carrie. Having to sing that horrible song. Still makes my ears bleed when I hear it.

Should Star Wars Purists Shut Up?
Time
Jimbo, I hate to tell you but the Holiday Special is not a spoof. If it was anything it was painfully serious. Painful for the viewer that is.

Also, why is everything with you so black and white? Just becasue someone doesn't like one Star Wars movie does not mean that they hate Star Wars. Yes, Star Wars is the name of the whole saga. So what? I'm not too thrilled with ROTJ but that doesn't mean that I hate all Star Wars.

One minute you talk in generalities and two minutes later everything is all cut and dry. Either you like everything about Star Wars or in your eyes you hate Star Wars. Not true. I hate to echo this, but get a clue. I think that K-Mart is having a blue light special on them this weekend.

Originals not lost

The original versions are work prints in manys mind. Why not release ten versions to show how the movies evolved. Or just show the final version.

I don't know who first stated the originals were 'work prints' but that is just bogus. Sounds to me like Lucus blowing smoke to justify in his own mind that it's acceptable to butcher these movies.

Quote

People who prefer the originals are prequel haters. Those who prefer the Special Editions are prequel likers.

I for one, have never said I hate the Special Editions or the Prequels. I did like most of the stuff in the Special Editions and there is some parts of the Prequels that I like. I would have liked the Prequels to have been better. I certainly could live without that awful romantic dialogue in ATOC.

So, if by your opinion, because I love the originals, therefore I hate the Special Editions and Prequels answer me this: Why then did I pay $10.00 each time to see TPM four times and ATOC six times? There must have been something in those films that I liked or I wouldn't have spent $100.00 in movie tickets to see them now would I? Nor would I have gotten up at 5am to get into line to see the Special Edition of ANH the day it came out. And to further drive my point home, nor would I have watched the Special Editions and the Prequels at least 20 times on DVD and VHS. Of course, I've seen the originals many, many, many more times than that but that is irrelevant. And I am planning on buying the DVD set when it comes out (in spite of the fact that I think it's gong to be even more dreadful than what has already been done to these films).

I think, at least in my mind, that it's safe to assume that I am a Star Wars fan and always will be. However, that still doesn't erase the bad taste in my mouth that Lucas refuses to give me the chance to own my favorite movies they way that I saw them in the theatre when they came out. What Lucas and some people don't seem to realize is that these films, while 'owned' by Lucas, are also owned by a much larger group of people. The audience. These films in their original versions, are a part of film history and have long since become the property of time. They are a part of our pop culture. The collective consciousness of the movie audiences that saw them in 77, 80 and 83. No matter what Lucas does to them, they will always belong to us. Period. I'm sorry, but enough is enough. You can call me a Special Edition hater or a Prequel basher. I rightfully don't give a tinkers damn.

Is that going to stop me from helping see that the original versions are released on DVD? No. Not by a long shot. In fact, I think the Star Wars fan base has proven (at least to me) that no matter what Lucas does or does not do with these movies in the future, they will preseve the original versions on DVD as best as they can. So, to all of those out there who have bucked the system and Lucas by producing the bootlegs I say BRAVO! More power to you and keep up the good work. If there is one truth in this life (besides death and taxes) it's the only way to get people to sit up and listen is to hit them in their wallet. By not releasing the original versions on DVD Lucas has already lost tons of money and it looks like he stands to loose more. So let the bootlegging continue. I don't care what kind of spin you put on it, there is NO, I repeat, NO excuse for the originals not to be available on DVD. The only reason that I can come up with for this is the stubborn ramblings of a fat, rich old man who doesn't seem to realize that WE (the Star Wars buying public) are the ones who make sure that he has money in his pocket, clothes on his back, food on his table and a roof over his head. And we can take it away just as easily as we gave it to him.

Do I really see that happening? Sadly no. However, I believe that if the public can't force Lucas to release the originals on DVD, then he certainly can't force the public to buy the versions that he does release. It's really that simple. Some people will refuse to be fed the crumbs off his table. I personally applaud them.

Quote

Fans of the original trilogy have done nothing but bitch at Lucas and then ask Lucas to repect them. Its absolutly sick. After how wonderful Attack of the Clones was I can understand Lucas's frustration. There is simply no pleasing these people.

Yeah, there is a way to please these people. Release the originals as well as his new versions. It's that simple.

Quote

Releasing the originals in the same pack would result in either higher price, less extras, or both.

Perhaps. Perhaps not. I don't recall paying that much for the 2 disc Terminator 2 DVD and it had three versions of the film and a second disc of bonus stuff. If that is the case, then here's a HUGE money making idea for Lucas. Release a box set for each version. The originals and his new versions. Let the public decide. Now before you attack that, this can be done just like when they release a widescreen version as well as pan and scan version. So it can't cost that much to release two different versions of the same film on DVD with all of the same extra features. So I say....(raspberry). That's just blowing smoke up my ass and I'm not buying it for a minute. Or here's another HUGE money making idea. Just release the orginal versoins in a widescreen movie only disc set. It would still sell big time. The only reason that this is not happening is, again, the stubborn ramblings of a fat, rich old man.

The more that you look at this scenario, it becomes clear (at least to me) that Lucas is either really stupid or he's on drugs. I can't decide which. Most people are saying, 'Here George. Take my money please!' and the idiot is refusing. It just makes no sense to me. Especially from a marketing point of view. He's just cutting is nose off to spite his face.

And before you say it, no I don't give a damn about Lucas' 'vision of how he sees the films.' I saw his vision 20 years ago and I didn't need all of the bells and whistles then and I could live without them now. If Lucas wants to finish or improve the films to better fit his 'vision' then fine. I'm all for letting him do it and I will certainly support him in that venture. He also needs to acknowledge the fact that I among millions of others, deserve, that's right deserve, to have the originals available to us on DVD. I know you'll say Lucas doesn't owe me or anyone else anything. Yes and no. In the broader scheme of things perhaps he doesn't. He's the artist and it is his 'vision.' And yes he does owe us something. Again, these movies belong to the audience just as much as they belong to him. We made them successful. And in all honesty, how would it hurt him to release them? From what I can see, it would only continue to line his pockets with those liitle green pieces of paper with the pictures of the presidents. From what I can see he seems to like money.

Realistic, schmealistic. If we were being realistic none of the films would be on DVD until after episode III was finished. That was Lucas' original plan. I seem to recall that he changed his mind after so many people bitched and moaned about it.

Look at it like a snow ball. The more we roll it around the larger it's going to become. I wish I had a good idea to get the word out more, but so far I haven't had much luck. I happen stumble upon this site while researching the bootlegs.

As for my VHS copies. I only have the Faces box set and it's pan and scan. While I do have one set that I have only watched once, just due to age and the nature of VHS tapes they are going down the drain fast.

Continuity Errors in the OT
Time
I know that there is a web site dedicated to film errors, but I though it might be interesting to see what everyone has noticed in the way of errors in the original films (ie not the special editions). I've noticed several in ANH and not many in Empire or Jedi. However, I'm sure that there are errors in all of the films.

The ones in ANH that I have noticed are (for me) pretty hilarious. Like the bouncing Stormtrooper. When the Stormtroopers rush into docking bay 94 watch the scene closely. Han takes a couple of shots and at one point hits the archway and it explodes. At the same time one of the Stormtroopers colapses to his knees and then falls on his face. This is done in a long shot. Then in the close up of the Stormtroopers, the same soldier again falls to his knees and then on his face. Finally, as Han runs up the ramp, there is another long shot of the Stromtroopers and for the third time the same soldier does his thing. The only logical conclusion that I can reach is that this guy's uniforms must be made of rubber.

The circling Jawa is another good one. As Luke and 3PO are walking away after purchasing R5-D4 and C-3PO, R2 tries to sneak away. In the long shot of R2, a Jawa runs in front of him. Then just before R2 is stunned by the cheif Jawa, there is a close up of R2 and that same Jawa runs in front of him again. I believe it happens a third time, but I can't be sure. I'm sure everyone has noticed that when Uncle Owen says, 'What about that blue one? We'll take that one,' and thye show a side close up of R2, you can clearly see R5-D4 still sitting next to him. Impossible since R5-D4 is standing in front of Luke and 3PO.

Vader talking to Tarkin and his hands are moving but there is no dialogue.

Inside the sandcrawler you can see through R2's eye and see Kenny Baker inside.

During the battle of Yavin, you can see Vader's eyes or rather Dave Prowse's eyes through the mask.

The cardboard soldies during the awards ceremony.

Ben's lightsaber looses its color on a couple of instances during his duel with Vader and you can clearly see the sword (or fencing foil).

Has anyone noticed anything else from ANH? It took me years of watching ANH to find a mistake. Finally in 87, I noticed the first mistake. It was R5-D4 still standing next to R2 after the droid had exploded.

As for Empire and Jedi, I can't recall any at the moment so I'll let everyone else fill me in on those.

Okay, what did we LIKE about the Special Editions?
Time
I thought I'd revive this thread and state my opinions on this topic. Besides the sond and picture was there anything to like about the Special Editions? Well, for me there were several things that I did like.

ANH:
1. I did like the new approach to Mos Eisley. It did open up the city much more and showed it in a grander scale. It could have been done better but over all I liked it very much.

2. The Han and Jabba scene. I have always felt that this needed to be there. It was one of my favorite scenes in the book. True, the digital Jabba didn't look that great and it totally needs improved but overall the scene worked for me. Even Han stepping on the tail. It's for the kids so I can live with it.

3. The added Falcon taking off from docking bay 94 and landing on Yavin IV. Both seemed to be executed very well and it did add a bit more demensin to those scenes but over all I think they were really not needed.

4. The X-Wings and Y-Wings taking off from Yavin IV. This I thought was a huge improvement over the original.

5. The removal of the cardboard people. However, being a nut for film errors I think this one is just hilarious.

6. The Biggs scene. Loved it, loved it, loved it.

Most of the other stuff, Ben's house, the sky, the Sandcrawler (which I didn't know about until I read it here), and Han and the Stormtroopers I really don't have any feelings one way or another.

Empire
1. The snow battle and removal of the transparent cockpit. Being able to see the battle through the snow speeders cockpuit clearly was a marvelous improvement.

2. The approach to Cloud City and the Cloud Car fly by. I liked these along the same lines as the Mos Eisley stuff.

3. The windows. However, they need to be a little more consistent. ONe minute they are there and the next they are gone. Let's make up our minds shall we?

The wampa thing isn't a like or a dislike. I can live with it but it really wasn't needed. Some of the other small changes I'll have to go back and compare the original to the SE to judge.

Jedi
1. The Bantha herd. I though this was neat and unexpected.

2. The end music but not the celebration scenes.

Most of the rest of the changes to Jedi I really didn't care for or they were in my opinon just not needed.
