Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Ken, it's nice of you to admit that people here were right all along.  On other forums you have described us as mean... try to keep in mind that there is a difference between "angry" and "mean".  We are angry, and I think we have a right to be.

But in fact, you have even more of a right to be mad than we do....  for all your gushing and praise for LFL, they've rewarded you with a lousy transfer of the OT.

Humdinger Analysis Thread : Glitch, Cryptography or Steganography?
Time

I'm not worked up...   <-- note, please read with "i care" luke voice

I am amusedly interested in what could cause such a glitch, since I've never seen one like that before.  I also will be interested to see if the glitch turns up on the actual blu-ray when someone here on this board purchases it.  For instance, now that the word is out, it is entirely possible that LFL will go in last minute and remove the glitch just to mess with us and keep his zombie army rah-rah-ing.  But seriously, now that Harmy's set has come out, the only thing that could get me worked up is if LFL actually restores SW from an original 70mm print.  Now that would be worth getting worked up about.

I agree with Harmy.  Mainly, us geeks just enjoy talking about minutia like this.

Humdinger Analysis Thread : Glitch, Cryptography or Steganography?

DJ, there was a discussion of this in another thread.  The interest in the glitch isn't the glitch itself (I'm quite sure I wouldn't be able to see it), but its usefulness as a fingerprint as to which transfer a particular release is using.  If you'll recall, the various kenkraly's out there have been saying the blu-ray will be a new transfer. Well, the humdinger proves beyond all doubt that it isn't.  That is what is interesting about the glitch... I don't think it's anal at all.

I've figured it out!  George has been using a combination of steganography and subliminal messages in the PT that have successfully brainwashed legions of viewers into becoming hypnotized zombies that support his SE changes. We escaped because we don't like the PT, and therefore haven't watched it enough to become victims.

The humdimger glitch is not an encoding error, but a desperate encoded cry for help from someone in LFL who, in a brief moment of lucidity, hastily inserted a plea to be rescued.  I have decoded the message and it says: "please help, send troops, I am being tortured at Skywalker Sound by being forced to insert George's new effects into... into... blbqwggw... "

I saw some people complaining about quality control (how they missed this frame) earlier, not just that it could be the same transfer.

It is true that the transfer that contains that glitch is indeed worth complaining about, but not because of the glitch!  The glitch is just an identifying mark that proves that the upcoming blu-rays are based on that particular, very poor transfer.

What is it about one frame? Unless you freeze frame it you can't see it! I am betting a lot films have similar flaws they just don't have as many frame by frame obsessive compulsive eyes on them as the Star Wars films do.

Are you just trolling, or do you really not get it?  Nobody cares about the glitch.  The glitch is simply being used to identify which transfer is which.  In this case, it proves which transfer the blu-ray release is based on.

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)

The other option would be to send Adywan all captures for each reel and have him give suggestions for each captured version of the reel.  Then you could select the best version scene by scene and have consistency amongst the captures scattered throughout the reel, but not use one capture across the entire reel.

Something like that.  I've sent Adywan two captures for the first reel and asked if he can find a single color correction for each reel, and if possible also try and move their color balances to make them as similar as reasonably possible.  In the case of reel 1, the most likely thing is that I'll use mostly one reel, with a few scenes substituted with the alternative capture.  (actually, I also have a third capture to be used only on a couple of relatively extreme brief scenes).

Presuming that goes well, we'll repeat the process for reels 2 and 3.

Moderation will be the order of the day.  Keep in mind that color balance isn't the only consideration when selecting which capture for which scene. There are also the various scratches, wobbles, fuzz balls, and assorted mouse droppings to contend with.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

But I think it would be a nice idea (as someone here already suggested) if one of the sound guys made a nice 5.1 mix that would have all the mono mix sound choices. But I'm definitely not the right guy to attempt something like that.

Yes, that would make a great project.  Oooh, a big project for sure.  Hmmm, maybe after finishing the rest of the OT I can try my hand at a "Puggo Mix".  It could be my excuse to get into 5.1 mixing, which I've been putting off in all my old-school stereo snobbery (rhymes with slobbery).

This glitch on the Death Star is in the DVD, HDTV versions, everything using this master. If this glitch is not present on the BD, this may show that there were better transfers done OF the 2004 version. I'm wondering if the glitch was in the file LFL sent over and Lowry didn't see.

Couldn't that be an encoding glitch, rather than a transfer glitch?  I've never seen a glitch like it and wouldn't presume it must be present in the transfer master.  Thus, even if that glitch turns out not to be in the BD, that wouldn't prove that it's from a different transfer.

Star Wars Scores and Releases - a general discussion thread

One of the great versions of "Imperial March" is on the Telarc demonstration disc called "Star Tracks".  It has the Cincinnati orchestra directed by Erich Kunzel.  There are some other SW, ST, and Raiders pieces also (including "Luke and Leia").  The sound quality is awesome and the performances true to the originals.  It's probably out of print but easy to find on eBay.
