New petition...for redoing the special editions
Time

*sighs* If we are going to be stuck with the SE then they might as well look good. So can we ask George to redo all the CGI sequences with the most modern state of the art technology? Jedi Rocks needs some serious updating! How about throwing in some B-wing sequences during the Battle of Endor? How about having the Ewoks morph into bad ass killer ape like creature when the go into battle? Can we get Mark Hammil to come in and redo his "No!" when Kenobi is killed so it sounds more like Vader (it's called foreshadowing people - look it up!)

If you're joking, then it's a pretty good one!  If you're serious, then this - on my 5-year anniversary as a member of this forum no less - may indeed be worthy of my very, very first - facepalm.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Star Wars was a product of the ingenuity of Lucas and others working under the constraints of limited technology, limited resources, limited money, and limited time.  What was produced under those limitations was nothing short of miraculous. Of course there were glitches as a result - many of them. Harmy's version fills a major gap in that it shows us exactly what was possible at the time, given the technology, funds, resources, and tight schedule.  Earlier SW home releases sorta did, but not so close to the quality seen on the big screen in 1977.  Asking him to "fix" things misses the point.  It's a preservation, not an edit.

If you want an "improved" version, then go for it!  Make one! I'd enjoy watching yours too. If you don't want to make one yourself, you might like Adywan's purist version. Everyone has their own idea of what the "perfect" edit would be.

Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions
Time

For me, Vader's silence was much more complex.  You didn't know what was really going on in his head... you knew he was part machine, and you knew that the "good" in him was being denied by some dark forces.  With his silence, you really wondered what complex stuff was going on in there -- if his old neurons were waking up and fighting with his new neurons, or exactly what. The "nooo!" destroys all the complexity that his silence allowed for.

Although in a sense, I suppose the "nooo!" makes him seem more like creepy Anakin from the episodes 2 and 3, the whiny one who always wants his way. Maybe that's why some of the gushers like it.

Idea: replacing the 'Crushed Blacks' of the 2004 and 2011 official releases...

"We did not crush the blacks on Episode 4 or Episode 6 in the 2004 transfers. Some scenes are deliberately dark and dense (not the same thing), because of the director's creative intent."

Geez, nobody crushes blacks on purpose. But they are crushed nonetheless, so it was done by mistake.  "Dark and dense"... what a bunch of rancor poo.

Carrie Fisher's "Wishful Drinking" on DVD
Time

walking_carpet said:

its funny that for a while, many actors did not want to appear in blockbuster franchises because they did not want to be typecast like fisher, hamill and to some extent christopher reeve for superman.  but nowadays,  top notch actors want to take the opportunity to star in these kinds of movies.  What has changed?

I'm guessing it's because theater runs are considerably shorter now than they used to be.

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)
Time

It is possible to make a transfer by just making a videotape of a projection. But framerates for projectors don't generally align with framerates for video, so some modification of the projector are usually required.  The standard way to do this is to use a 5-blade shutter instead of the 3-blade, in conjunction with adjusting the speed of the projector. There is a nice virtualdub filter for reducing any residual flicker that might result from any remaining variation.

The advantage of using the workprinter, on the other hand, is that you get an exact frame-by-frame correspondance between the film and the video. Since most players are capable of then performing the pulldown from the film frame rate to video frame rate, it usually results in cleaner motion.  They are also much easier to work with in post.

I sometimes use the method of filming off of a projection, when circumstances dictate.  For example, on films that have shrunk so much that the workprinter won't play them properly.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Day Of The Daleks is by no means on the list of really highly regarded stories (it's nice enough and no turkey but you'd have to look far to find a fan with it on his or her top ten list) so if it can get both versions treated equally why not Star Wars?

Yeah this pretty much blows the argument that it would be too expensive to restore the OOT. The resources available to LFL is orders of magnitude higher, and the sales of SW would be orders of magnitude higher as well.

If Lucas doesn't get his finger out it may be in future generations that what we are doing here be similarly valuable.

Yes!  This is very possible, and one reason I think it's exciting to be a part of this forum.

What was the "fatal flaw" of the Prequels if you think they sucked? (aka. Let's take a break from hating on the blu-rays)
Time

A list of important reveals that were blown by the Prequels and/or SEs would be interesting.  Something like:

  • Jabba's surprising appearance
  • Yoda's surprising appearance
  • the Falcon
  • Vader is dad
  • Luke has a sister

Any others?  A lesser one would be the Jedi Mind Trick, because it's so cool when ObiWan does it and you're wondering what's going on.  But no biggy if you've seen the prequels in the order that George suggests.

This is where the prequels do some real damage... by effectively ruining some of the best moments of the OT.  It's like walking into a comedy show and having someone give you a sheet that lists all the punch lines before you get to hear the jokes.
