Your review shows great insight.

One thing that makes the newer one more realistic is the compositing of the dewback in front of the buildings. The border looks heavy in the older version.
First impression is the new one looks more realistic.
I'd feel the same if it was "Citizen Kane"... important cultural stuff deserves to be preserved. Just "let it go" is not the purpose of this forum. That's why there are people here doing their own preservations/restorations, and the various efforts such as the webpage(s) and facebook page, petition, etc. It's not about whining, it's about acting.
There are three other forums I belong to with similar aims for other topics (not Star Wars), just so you know that it's not just some weird SW fixation.
Another movie that would be worth transfering on the X9 is "Dracula 1979". As far as I know, a version with fully-saturated colors is still not available on DVD. I made a transfer using a cheap panasonic laserdisc, but an X9 would make a significantly better transfer.
I see that argument all the time. It is a combination of ignorant and stupid. Ignorant because they don't know that film is actually very high resolution and properly restored should look fabulous, and stupid because they haven't stopped for 2 seconds to wonder why the Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, etc., come from even older film and DON'T look like crap.
Good idea!
I don't have strong feelings about the 3D TPM one way or another. It probably will do pretty well (not great, but good), and in all honesty I have to admit that I'll probably go and see it. Too bad the creepy puppet yoda isn't in it -- that's one of my favorite parts of TPM and I would have loved to see "it" in 3D. Scary! :)
Dang, now a part of me almost wishes my handle was "creepy puppet yoda" so I could use it as my avatar.
What's so horrible about the poster? Yeah it isn't great, but I've seen worse.
There are companies here in the U.S. that will scan 16mm in hi-def.
Adywan is still working on the color correction of reels 2 and 3. I'm also expecting to get the 2nd print in a couple of weeks, which I'm only going to use for a couple of patches (I'm not going to scan the whole thing). Sound sync is done.
I think that right now is the best time to be a SW fan in at least 5 years, maybe since 1997. The fan restorations are the best that SW has ever looked on home video, and more is on the way. And for the first time, there is a groundswell of discontent from the general population and a growing number of industry professionals. I'm more hopeful than ever.
I don't have any reason to "hate" memorex. They just have worked lousy compared to the other disks I've tried. And their lightscribe disks always turn out really faint, and then fade further over the next few months. The only worse disks I've encountered were some generic CD-Rs that all had dropouts.
Perhaps you think that "SE" is an abbreviation for "sequel"? It's actually an abbreviation for "special edition".
There's a version of "Imperial March" on the Telarc disk "Star Tracks" that shakes the rafters.
I would never use Memorex. Their lightscribe disks are the worst made, and the only coasters I've ever had for DVD-R's, SL and DL, have all been Memorex. For SL (and CDs) I stick with Taiyo Yuden, and for DL I've only used Verbatim.
Are Verbatims still the dl disks of choice?
This is the first time I've ever heard the term "sequel trilogy". Is it actually used on other sites like TFN? If so, wow. That makes it seem that the prequels are really the basis and the original three films came along later and build on the story that the prequels started. Amazing, the assimilation is complete.
But back on topic, assuming by sequel trilogy he means the original trilogy, then a petition requesting a CG yoda to replace the puppet yoda is one I would never sign.
I think this thread should request a full-sized photo of Monolithium's avatar.
Frankly, I'd rather put the creepy TPM puppet yoda into AOTC and ROTS.
And what exactly are the "sequels"?
Scope means that each widescreen frame is stretched vertically to fill the entire frame. Then it requires a special lens to stretch it back horizontally when viewing. PG and PSB were scope prints stretched in software after fullscreen capture.
Flat can mean either full frame or widescreen with borders, neither of which require a special lens to project.
Scope is generally the preferred type of 16mm or 8mm print if you're looking for the very best quality.
Is there something special about this one? On any given day there are generally a couple of these up on eBay. It is exactly the first of four reels on the Puggo Edition. Now, a scope copy would be cool... they come up very rarely.

Very cool. Is there something like this for 35mm?
Yes but they are much more expensive. Few individuals would buy one for themselves. Typically a professional service would own one and people would pay them to do the transfer. I'm pretty sure that is the case here. But it is complicated by the fact that no professional service would transfer a print of Star Wars because the clear copyright violation would endanger them legally.

No, not a joke. Might've helped if the thread title was changed to reflect its availability, but oh well.
It has been my policy to not distribute my edits. Officially, they are for my own private amusement and research. Dang if other people don't sneak in and mess everything up by distributing them, though :)
I am using a Workprinter-16.

I just do the restoration, other people apparently distribute them. So I don't know. It might be on tehparadox, or maybe someone else will chime in and let you know where it currently can be found.
