Please clear your cache and let me know if it's still happening. I had to implement a JS fix yesterday to secure the forum against this issue, and anyone pulling a cached JS file will see HTML in their posts after they submit. Editing the post and resubmitting should fix it once your cache is cleared. I tested it in FF after clearing my cache and it's fine.

PS78: Pre-ANH Star Wars Bootleg VHS from 1978 ***"RAW" DVD RELEASED***

One thing is for sure, you have quickly become the resident guru when it comes to VHS source material.  Your setup will surely prove useful not just for this project.  It could even become a side business.

You might want to check out the Yahoo group "oldvtrs".  Through a similar (non-SW) project I got drawn into EIAJ and CV video restoration, and found the oldvtr forum invaluable.  There are some real pros there who know their stuff.  I'm sure they'd be interested in discussing your setup and your results.  They might even steer some work your way.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)

Scofield is slower and lower-pitched than the PG audio, so I'm hoping an analog or analog-style ("speed up the tape") fix will go a long way toward making this job easier, but.... yow!

I can't recall someone attempting to re-sync an audio cassette recording of one of these movies with an official release.  The closest work you are attempting, done by someone else, would be the PAL NTSC, but those are known quantities, you are dealing with an on the fly shifting.  Get it as close as you can.

This is exactly what I have had to do for all of my sound syncs.  Capturing 16mm audio requires using an old analog projector, and so it never aligns with the frame captures.  In some cases I'm synching audio from a different source (such as for the PG, and for PSB).  And whenever there is a splice in the film you have to adjust for that. Vegas lets you cut tracks into segments and stretch them independently.  I'm sure my syncs aren't perfect.

Yes, it is very tedious work.  When the scene is something mechanical, like a laser blast, it doesn't matter so much if you're off by a frame or two.  But getting voices to line up with lip movements is really hard, and even being just one frame off cane make it look wrong.

One trick I've learned is to err on the side of audio being late.  In the real world, our brains have come to expect the light to arrive before the sound.  So if the audio is late, you might notice it.  But if the audio arrives early, it feels really wierd.  Doesn't work for close-ups.

Question: What is the correct size? Someone mentioned in an earlier post that all I need to do is double the width. Is this correct? If so, please explain further, as I'd like to know!

Double-the-width seems to work for 16mm/Scope film.  I don't know what the right correction would be for your capture, though... if it's a capture of a 35mm film, I would expect the correction could be different.

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)
Time

Just finished synching reel 2.  This one was tougher - had to cut it into about 10 pieces.  And there was a strange splice that required me to use about a quarter second of the mono mix to smooth over.

Finished the extra.

Started collecting the pieces for the "making of".  Still have a lot to do on that.

Will work on the sync of the third and final reel later today or tomorrow morning.

Original cut showing in a theater in Wales(U.K.) tonight!
Time

I like to consider Harmy's work a preservation.  Because although in many cases he is rebuilding elements rather than cleaning original ones, to me the end result looks more like what I saw in the theater in 1977 than any other project.  I know most people saw a grainy, dirty, overplayed film, or a fuzzy VHS tape on a small screen, but what appeared in May and June of 1977 was clean, sharp, and ultra hi def.  Harmy's version does the best job of preserving that original 1977 opening day viewing experience.

You've got some catching up to do!  The "GOUT" is the one official DVD release that is pretty much identical to your VHS, only better quality.  The DarkJedi version corrects many of the digital artifacts on the GOUT combined with a very high quality upscale.  And Harmy's preservation is a full HD recreation of the original cuts using a variety of sources and difficult recompositing.  Neither is a "fan edit".  If you love the original films, you owe it to yourself to check these out.  There are threads in the "preservation" section of the forum.

I don't care much for "fan edits" either.  But the preservation efforts are pretty much what this forum is all about - preserving the originals.  And if George won't do it, we will!

That's what usually happens in films when there is a foreign language spoken. New subtitles: but in the language of the country it's being show in.

I know that.  But the Greedo subtitles are different... they aren't really subtitles in the traditional sense - they are a part of the original film because of the segment of speach in an imaginary alien language that no viewer could possibly know. The Swedish 16mm film I digitized had Swedish subtitles that ran through the entire film, but during the Greedo scene they sat on top of (in addition to) the original English Greedo subtitles.  They didn't replace the English Greedo subtitles with Swedish ones.

So I repeat my question - in the case of the Greedo subtitles, what displayed in non-English-speaking theaters?  Does anyone know for sure?

As it has the same colour as the lightsabre element and it appears in Puggo Grande as well, I'm pretty sure it is some error made in the making of the lightsabre effect, so that's why I restored it.

Not every flash of light in PG (or PSB) is necessarily original.  There is a strange flash that appears in one 16mm ESB print but not the other, for example - Adywan noticed it.  (not sure about the particular one referenced above, though).

Yoda Movie
Time

Hmm, it's less fun when you have to spell it out, but here goes...

TPM is such a train wreck, that I find some of the more hilariously-awful scenes (such as creepy puppet yoda, or CPY for short) to provide some motivation for watching it.  It's also why I can't stand fan edits that remove Jar Jar.  Take out the awfulness, and what's left is just boring.  CPY gives me something wierd and kooky to look forward to, so I don't fall asleep or worse start chewing my arm off.

I find episodes 2 and 3 unwatchable. At least episode 1 sucks.

I'm just curious to hear some valid reasons instead of hate bashing, which is what I get when I ask.

A couple of posts ago, Tobar posted the link to RedLetterMedia's lengthy and famous discourse on exactly why TPM was a bad movie.  If his over-the-top style bothers you, just ignore his satire and listen to the content of what he explains, because he lays out all of the reasons pretty clearly.

Now, it is still possible to enjoy a bad movie.  I actually enjoy TPM because of some of the scenes (it's the only prequel that I can stand to watch).  There are also some other crappy movies that I enjoy.  There are some great movies that I don't enjoy.  But even though I enjoy TPM, I agree wholeheartedly with RLM's reasoning, that as cinematic art it is really, really awful.
