I don’t know… given Bernie’s “socialist” reputation, just imagine the names that Trump would have branded him with, and which probably would have stuck. The only reason they didn’t vilify Bernie was because he was a convenient martyr in the vilification of Hillary. Trump is very, very skilled at bullying, and his people eat it up.

Recalling the goal of these 16mm projects… first and foremost, their purpose is to provide another source of data for people researching details about the movies. So I think it’s important to make them easy to get and easy to watch, and to include only the original footage and audio with as few changes as possible. They aren’t intended to be the greatest movie-going experience.

I have always been happy to make the raw captures available to anyone with an actual use for them.

With this in mind, I think that it’s more important to fit a doc describing the capture, etc., than to include the laserdisc audio. If I can fit the latter I will, otherwise, I’ll just stick with the optical audio.

This is not to say that future projects at much higher resolution won’t happen… more on that later.

Working on the doc tomorrow…

The others were done at avg 4.5 Mbps, max=7.5. If I use that for ROTP, I can’t even fit the optical audio on the disc, let alone menus and extras.

If I drop the average bit rate to 4.0 Mbps, I can fit the optical audio at 2/0 (192k) and still have some room for other stuff. Not sure if a second audio track would fit. I can’t immediately discern the difference between 4.5 and 4.0. I’m fearful of even trying 3.5, thus my asking what others have tried.

I can save a tiny amount of space by dropping the audio to 1/0 and a lower bitrate. My guess is that a bitrate of 64k would be indistinguishable for the optical audio. I’m not sure whether the hassle that 1/0 might create on some DVD players (center channel only?) to be worth the small amount of savings. And obviously I wouldn’t have that option for LD stereo.

Schorman ripped 'em all
and GOUT-sync’ed too!

For a DVD release you wouldn’t want uncompressed PCM; it’s more than a gigabyte.
I think Harmy’s AVCHD had a 2.0 track, if the bitrate isn’t too high for DVD-spec.
Chew used hairy_hen’s 5.1 IIRC when he converted Harmy’s works to DVD

Thanks for the info! Actually, if I sync and do the conversion to ac3 myself, an uncompressed is the most useful. Yeah, a 2 hour wav file at 48k hz would be about a gig and a half. Not sure if gout-synching helps.

Could you not just slightly lower the bit rate for rotj to make room? And for mpg2 I highly, HIGHLY recommend hcenc. It’s free and gives fantastic results. And it has an option to where you just set max bitrate and desired file size and it will calculate the avg bit rate automatically and get very close to the filesize you desire. It works great and I even use it for blu ray encoding because it’s so easy and its encodes are as good as h264 at high bit rates. (Obviously at lower bit rates h264 will always win but at high rates I don’t see much difference)

What do you think might be a reasonable average bitrate for acceptable quality?

I wonder if many of our problems stem from there being only 2 parties. If there were more, with proportional representation, there might be more incentive for compromise. However, I don’t see a path to that ever happening; there is no way any sitting politician would allow it.

Gerrymandering has become a big problem. Perhaps district lines should be the purview of the judicial branch?

I’ll give hcenc a try and compare the results with tmpge. Thanks for the tip.

One of the things I have found most disturbing, is comments left by Trump supporters regarding his ability to pardon. For example, at the end of one article, several commenters boasted gleefully that he will still “win” simply by pardoning his family members and others around him. Is it not a terrible state of affairs when so many allegedly law-and-order folks would revel in pardoning people for federal crimes? Can they not see the irony? Only 7 months in office and already talk of pardoning people.

He might be able to pardon his family, but if he gets impeached, he won’t be able to pardon his way out of that.

The whole Trump win and presidency has made me rethink whether our “system” is really as great as I thought it was. Maybe it took a couple hundred years, but I fear its fundamental flaws are finally being realized.

care to elaborate?

A system that leads to a crazed minority of voters installing a sociopath as president, with every other branch of government too afraid to challenge him, is clearly flawed. (yes I realize there is still the judicial branch, but that appears to be changing soon)

What changes would you make to our system?

If I’ve been this wrong for 50 years, it wouldn’t be logical for me to assume that I could possibly know the answer.

Things coming together well. TMPGE is SO much better than MainConcept… very glad to not be wrestling with that any more. This alone may have fixed the glitch I was encountering. I also discovered I was wasting some space in my audio encode.

Should be done with the movie encodes today. Will start working on the menu next. Not sure if there will be room for a “making of” track or not - probably a short one.
