State of the Trilogy/ annual SW depression
Time
After Kubrick's phenomenal restoration of "2001", it still astounds me that George Lucas hasn't been inspired (or at least shamed) into doing something similar. With the Blu-Ray and HD editions of meticulous 70mm originals, Kubrick has secured the legacy for himself and his great masterpiece - heck, his 70mm restored prints of "Space Odyssey" are STILL touring the country (and the world).

I just hope that I outlive George, because I have to believe that after he dies, someone on the inside will be eager to right this wrong and do for SW what Kubrick did for 2001.

opinions - how the release of the original to theatres was different than the new three films.
Time
I was the perfect age in 1977... a senior in high school. By the time the movie came out, I was already hyped for it because for an entire year it had been plugged by the late TV show (Creature Features) that I watched. The host (Bob Wilkins) kept saying there was this movie coming out that was going to be incredible and we weren't going to believe our eyes. He was right.

The only thing at all similar was "2001". But it was a different sort of thing because it was so cerebral and slow. Certainly a fantastic movie, and I saw it in the theater too (I was 8), and loved it even at my young age. But Star Wars promised to be more entertaining, accessible, and with ground-breaking special effects.

As it turns out, when the movie hit the theaters I was away from home for a high school math retreat, with about 75 other "nerdy" kids like myself. You can imagine how many times we would walk en-masse to the theater to watch Star Wars. I know I saw it at least 3 times just in the week it came out, and more times thereafter. (the walk to the theater involved going through a cemetary at night, which sorta added to the intensity).

When I got home, I dragged everyone in my family out to see it. I'd like to know what percentage of the U.S. population then saw it - 90%?... you just HAD to see it, there was never anything like it before. Even people who didn't like sci-fi went to see it. It was in the theater for many months.

Then for the next several years there was all this Star Wars "stuff" you could get - trading cards, figurines, lunchboxes, board games, etc. etc. Video games didn't exist yet, so it was all this other stuff. The characters became icons and part of our daily language. Everyone knew "the force" and "Darth Vader" and "R2D2" and what a "Princess Leia hairdo" was, and "ObiWan Kenobi", and "light sabers". I swear there was probably a segment of our population that thought it was all true.

Of course, I also saw the PT movies, more than once. But there really is no comparison. They were fun movies but just didn't (and couldn't, for that matter) have the impact, and I think over time they will fade into obscurity because at their core they simply weren't nearly as good movie-wise (script, acting, etc.).

Star Wars was by far the most memorable movie-going experience in my life. It is one of my fondest memories. And, my greatest regret is that I never saw it on 70mm... I'm jealous of everyone who did!!!!

This is the only laserdisc I found on ebay which does not have the 1990 Universal logo on it, so it SHOULD be what you are looking for (the text graphics scream 1980's). It's got a BUY IT NOW option. Hope this helps you.

Since it was so cheap, and has sat there for a couple of days, I just went ahead and bought it. If you like, I can try to do the transfer myself (I have the equipment but only an average LD player). At that price I thought there was no point to letting it get away. If the OP wants to do a transfer, he can buy it from me for the same $8.99 I just paid. I remember it being a nice-looking movie when I saw the real color version on cable a couple of years ago... interestingly, I've not ever seen the more common "faux black & white" version.

Info: For sale on ebay - SW / ILM 16mm stuff

Well my 16mm SPFX hasn't sold. So u are welcome to attempt a telecine if you want.

Excuse my ignorance, but is SPFX available already as an extra somewhere? If you're trying to sell it, I'd presume that means it's already been transferred. Not much point in my telecine-ing something that has already been made available (if it's a nicely-done version, that is). But if not, I'd be willing to digitize it.

By the way, these ebay items look VERY interesting.

Again, I'm not planning to bid. But if someone here snags them and needs the 8mm and/or the 16mm motion pictures transferred, let me know.

There’s an interesting auction up on eBay right now on a 16mm reel of the 1976 trailer, but of even greater interest is that also included are two 8mm films of “Estes Rocket employees researching the Star Wars models” at ILM. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but maybe some of you do:

I don’t plan on bidding, but if anyone here wins the auction and would like any or all of it telecine’d, let me know and Puggo will come to the rescue. He can do both the 8mm and 16mm reels.

most recent poster

If you post something in the "New Forum Software" thread, your name is listed as the most recent poster in EVERY category. I understand why that happens, but I'm not sure it's desirable. Maybe if the "most recent" poster in each category could be determined by looking only in the "threads", and not in the "announcements", the main page would be more appropriate in this regard.

I have a lot of fond memories of the old layout, and I am just now starting to get use to this new layout; but now that we have the old forums colors back and the place doesn't feel so unfamiliar anymore, I am really starting to appreciate it.

I already like the "blue" look better. It's easier to see which threads have new posts. And having the avatars is a HUGE advantage. I usually gripe about forum changes, but this is clearly a major improvement. And getting my avatar to within 5k was a piece of cake... I see no reason to up the limit.

date shown at top of posts
Time
Something that is not a bug, but that I find makes the posts difficult to read, is that at the very top of each post there is a date... but it is not the date of the post! It is the poster's "member since" date. In order to see the dates of the posts, you have
to scan down a few lines. So it is hard to tell at a glance when each post was posted. I think it would make more sense to have the date at the top of each post be the date of the post. The "member since" date is not really all that important, yet it is the most prominent. Perhaps it could be moved to the left, next to the avatar (like it was before) and the date of the post moved to the top?
