Trilogy Quad Case Wrap - Changed a little bit. Took off "Special Edition" and made the background a little easier for people to edit. Go nuts with this one!
Trilogy Quad Case Wrap Alternate - Alternate version with "our heros" in the corner

I know we all hate the prequels but I made a prequel box anyway for my fan edits and the clone wars cartoon. It came out pretty good but the dvds fit a little too tightly. I'm not too worried though.

And I want to say it's always nice to see customs for the Special Editions because there aren't nearly as many for them as there are for the OOT - on this forum that makes sense, but you know what I mean.

In case you didn't know, that image is in fact only half. The right hand side features characters from the prequels. Given that, if there was a scan of that second half of the image it would allow someone like yourself to create a similar cover to the SE one you've shown, that would feature the prequels. Not asking for one, just letting you know. Though it would make for a neat join-up on the spines.

Oh wow! That would be fantastic if someone found or made a scan of that! I'll probably rework the above design a little later. It doesn't feel right as a cover right now and I need to improve the spine.

Hey somebody, do some covers with these scans! I DARE YA!

Haha just noticed this for whatever reason. You are a fucking god, and you will get some covers out of this!

You can make a selection before changing the layer mask of the area that you do want to change, then use the brush tool or paint bucket tool to paint over the areas you want to take out of the layer mask.

It was actually faily easy to do. I had a layer on photoshop with the artwork in it, and a hue/saturation layer above it. I then added a layer mask to the hue/saturation layer and went over the part I didn't want black & white in black (when working in layer masks, you use black & white to determine what you want to show up).

red shows where to create a hue/saturation layer as well as other quite useful effects.

I have, but I think that was due to the media I used. A couple of them were orignally on cheap dvdrs I got from my friend. I re-burned those though. I use "Fellowes NEATO" brand cd labels if that helps, along with their program "MediaFace II" or "MediaFace 4"

I've gotten the settings pretty good, sometimes when the holes are already in the image it still gets problems, i think it works best to leave the image as a square.

anyway, starting to ramble. was wondering what your printing method for the discs was. maybe see if theres a better program out there than the one that came with the epson, or better settings for the size within the epson printer.

They are stick on labels. I can't afford a cd printer.

I get a lot of those problems as well with small borders around the edge. I usually have to print them a couple times, and my original images start off as squares to reduce that problem.

Not that many will care as much now but here is my dvd cover set. I started them all almost a year ago working from the Gonzo edition covers (not sure who made those) and it sort of took off from there as it was the base for my designs (along with the official dvds of course). For the original trilogy I used the artwork from the backs of the TR47-dvd art since they were just what I wanted to see. I then typed up new plot summaries. The prequels are a recent edition to the collection. I originally wasn't going to do them but I figured why the hell not. I don't consider them done enough yet but they are shaping out pretty nicely.

Aside from the idea for the cover art this next one is my own composition. It might need tweaking here and there but I'm fairly happy with it.The original cover art for the Supplemental Materials was really low quality so I went and fixed that.

This is sort of a remake of an older design. Same text/screens on the backside but I added new artwork and kept it consistent with the others.

Clone wars I wasn't too picky about and just used one of the older covers.
http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/4185/swcwdvd2ri.jpg

Here's a photo of the actual dvds. I like to stay consistent.

Yes we are cool. I tend to get a little nuts from time to time

The simplicity of my work not only is a preference of mine and a few others in here... but because there are SOOOO many transfers, edits, etc. that the creators can just take what I have done, and slap whatever the heck they want to on the back. Anyone who feels my work is incomplete looking because of simplicity, complete it to how you see fit. I don't get paid for this, and I would keep doing them if there was no one to share them with. It is all in fun.

I guess I had this place all wrong for whatever reason. I should have seen that sort of perspective from the beginning but I think too competitively. I admit that making star wars covers was not only my most successful work but the most fun to do. I'll probably be here a lot.

At any rate, I am back home from work and here are my templates:

Edit: Boxwrap.zip
3 PSD files. Boxset template for Pretty self-explanitory. The only thing I really can't tell you off the top of my head are the exact box measurements so you'll have to figure that out. The star wars box I posted earlier was one of two that I made. The other one came out crooked. It's all a matter of trial and error, but once you get it right it'll look fantastic.

Materials:
Full sheet adhesive labels (8 1/2 x 11 or larger depending on the box size)
Paper cutter (for straight cuts)
A large sheet of mat board (Not sure what thickness exactly. 1 or 2 mm should be plenty thick. Shop around)
Scissors
12" metal ruler or a ruler with a metal edge. Stay away from that plastic shit unless you really want a crooked box =P
Pencil for measuring
Soda of choice

1. Set up your design and make sure you leave space outside the guidelines in those templates. Also leave a little bit of a margin open in "Boxwrap01.psd" and "Boxwrap02.psd" inside each guided area because you might need to cut some of the top and bottom in order to fit correctly over the box.

2. Print out some test sheets at the lowest ink setting available and make sure they fit properly over your dvds. Adjust accordingly. Double check all your designs and make sure they look the way you want them to.

3. Print out finalized designs onto "full sheet labels" adhesive paper. I used Avery brand. The results could be a little better but they do the job just fine. As long as they are full size adhesive labels you'll be golden.

3. Using the mat board, measure out your box and make sure all your lines are straight and have perfect 90 degree angles. It should look something like this:

http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/9623/cutout4ps.jpg

Make sure the cardboard won't overlap itself when it's cut. Eyeball and doublecheck the hell out the lines of this because you don't want to screw this up and have to start over.

4. Cut the box out. Be careful not to bend the mat board while you cut it. Make sure it fits the dvds. Wrap the cardboard around your box completely and make sure it can wrap tight enough around the dvd cases that they wont' be able to slip out too easily. This can be tricky.

5. Next use some kind of strong tape. Masking tape might work but I really don't know how well. I used a wide roll of duct tape that could basically stretch along the topside without any overlapping. Tape the top and bottom onto the sides. You don't have to tape the inside if you did this right. Again make sure the angles aren't crooked.

6. Once the box is all set and ready for dvds, you can apply the box wrap. I used a cheap paper cutter to cut them out so they're nice and straight. The first thing you do is cut out Boxwrap 3 into the top and bottom half. The horizontal guide along the center of the template is where you'll be cutting. Make sure the top is in the right direction. It should be facing the front side of the box. My photos on the previous page show this. For the bottom half flip the box upside down and and it should still face the front side of the box (Not shown in photos).

You'll see that there's an edge around the bottom and top pieces. Make sure those wrap around the other sides including the inside of the box. You'll need to cut accordingly.

7. Next up is the backside. Same idea just make sure the top and bottom are cut properly and wrap it around with a short overlap going into the side of the box. That will get covered up next.

8. Last but not least, cut the frontside properly and wrap it around like the others. Make sure it's not upside down etc.

Then you're done! You should have a really nice box now! Congrats. If you need more help I am 90% I'll be making another box next week for the prequels. The design for that has been done for a couple weeks but I've been at college and mat board is at home along with a nice printer. I'll go into a little more detail when I'm working on that.

Ok I apoligize. I agree that I sort of blew up for no reason and that it was just because I was a little tired of seeing the same circle-jerking about Coov's work after browsing through this entire thread. I really don't want to come off as a complete jerk, I can just be opinionated every now and then.

Your work is not that bad Coov, but I'd love to see how you expand upon a lot of your ideas and go the extra mile to give them an extra flare. That's really what design is all about. As a tip, I always found small movie titles on the side of dvds hard to read. Perhaps in your next work you can make them more spread out. Also I'd like to see more developed backsides and inserts. Again, sorry for the fuss. I realize you are a very respectable person and I don't want to harm that in any way. Perhaps I was just trying to throw attention away from you.

What exactly did you come here for, PepsiOtaku? To contribute to the forum? Or to get your dick sucked over your design? Because truth be told, I find your design lackluster and unoriginal, we've seen it a thousand times over. Too bad it took you "a year" to figure it out. Its only redeeming value (which is a mild novelty, at best) is that it's plastered onto the side of a box, which opens up the possibility for other (better) artists to come along and create something worth using. But the real issue here is not your shoddy, re-hashed design, as we would've politely given some constructive criticism to a new forum member who was polite to everyone else...

But, the fact is, you don't have a right (in your THIRD POST) to trash Coov's work based solely on the fact that he gets a lot of praise. Especially when you haven't earned ANY respect for yourself. It might not be your cup of tea, but for me, Coov's streamlined designs, (free from being bogged down by plot synopsis', lists of bonus features, credits, etc, etc) are both unique and elegant. His work is bold and consistently good, in my opinion. He gets praise obviously because his work appeals to people. Personally, it's all I want on my shelf.

Not to mention the fact that Coov is a heck of a nice guy who is always contributing to this forum, and helping the people on it. What he doesn't do is show up waving something in your face saying "look what I did", while dumping all over other forum members.

I'm embarrassed for you.

I would just like to point out that I started my project a year ago and work on it during my free time. I created the box design in a few days over this past summer. Take a look at professionaly commerical box sets and you'll notice that they are simply cardboard with a design "pasted on." I wanted my boxset to have that look. Let's see you do better. I will be back at my home computer in about an hour and a half where I will "contribute" some more.

Aw c'mon- don't hate. You did a REALLY good job at being a dick in your third post. Kudos!

I try. All I'm trying to point out is that a lot of other dvd covers in here are either really good or have a lot of potential and you guys blow them off as soon as Coov posts something new. Also it would be nice to see more constructive criticism rather than "that looks good great job, can I have that?"

Edit: I'll post specific directions on how to make a box template in photoshop later, but I don't have anywhere I can host a PSD template.

Wow...I'd hate to be a dick on my third post but Coov's work is not the end all be all of star wars dvd covers. Every other post in this thread is "oh my god coov fapfapfap." Just fucking stop it. I've been re-editing the same star wars boxset for the past year now, with tons of revisions. Coov just pumps out tons of boring covers that I really can't see anyone use. In half of them, the backside has absolutely nothing more than a logo. Coov, your stuff looks nice, don't get me wrong but if you realy cared about your work you'd finalize a few of those designs for actual use. I will post the rest of my cover series later when I get back from work. Also, if you want a template, measure everything out yourself and put the numbers into photoshop. It's actually a lot easier than it sounds.

I used a big piece of mat board for it, literally measured everything out by hand and drew out the box shape in the mat board so that they would fit perfectly without any overlapping after it was cut, then I used masking tape to tape the top and bottom of the box together. The artwork was printed out on full size adhesive paper, 3 sheets to be exact, then cut and apply. Voila!

This is my boxset. I made it to match the style of the official US Indiana Jones dvd boxset. At the moment it includes the Dr. Gonzo editions and the two Making the Trilogy discs. I liked the official dvd bindings so I kept those in my design. I plan to make this a 10 disc set and incorporate them all together. From left to right, first case will hold ANH & Deleted Magic, 2nd will hold ESB & the holiday special, 3rd will have ROTJ along with a dvd of my own making that includes the AFI Lifetime acheivement award tribute to George Lucas and some bonuses, 4th - gonzo Supplemental materials disc and something else (still deciding), and of course the two making the trilogy discs.

With demand I'll post the actual covers. I have made dvd cover slips, disc covers and inserts for all of these. Prequels are a work in progress at the moment so don't ask. Here you go
