This sounds intriguing. I bought a boxed set and I have never checked out any deleted scenes. I think X1-3, the Wolverine, and DOFP make a really satisfying story arc.

I wonder if it’s possible to create an ultimate edit, using deleted scenes and maybe even key scenes from the ‘less worthy’ movies.

Part of me would like to show Jean augmenting Magneto’s power to move the bridge in X3, maybe some opening shots of some X-Men at the mansion in the Wolverine, and Rogue using super strength to take down a sentinel in the Rogue cut. A very naughty part of me would like to show either a clone of Jean Grey or a test tube of Summers DNA at the Essex lab or a project marked Nathan Summers. Shots from Logan were re-used in New Mutants after all.

I’m amazed anyone still remembered this topic – I was here browsing for materials related to a project I’m collating (Spider-Man Rarities) when I saw this.

There are so many films that could benefit from an ultimate cut, it’s absurd.

I am working on a Star Trek TMP fan edit but I am waiting for the remastered version of the DE so was thinking about other potential projects. I started browsing and doing research.

I am a huge fan of the X-men so I am thinking along the lines of, can I add any of the training scenes from First Class to the training montage in X1, particularly including Banshee and Havok? Can any of the fight between Wolverine and Gambit be stitched into X2 or X3? There are multiple teases for Mr Sinister across the franchise. Can they be spaced out differently, alongside some scenes from Apocalypse to tease the existence of the two big X-villains without actually going all out towards the poorly executed confrontation?

It was very sad to hear of the death of the legendary Doug Trumbull but he was consulting with the DE restoration team on the upcoming 4k/Bluray. It looks like they have decided to go all out to fix the tiny imperfections in the special effects. It’s quite exciting!

I am waiting to see what it looks like before considering what any ultimate cut should look like. The Theatrical Cut bluray is incredibly sharp although Kirk looks a bit purple in some scenes.

I would definitely want to keep Grace Lee Whitney in the main credits as I have been prepping some deepfaked tweaked scenes with her in.

The New Mutants - Thriller Cut (Released)

Movies Remastered said:

I can’t say I’ve seen the earlier X-Men movies recently. Have they aged badly? Logan was pretty awesome and now I’ve fixed New Mutants it’s a much easier watch.

The movie harked back to the time when I started reading comics regularly, so maybe I engaged with the material a bit more. I felt it dragged a bit in the middle but it was otherwise ok.

Personally, I think the earlier movies are decent. There are a few inconsistencies but nothing horrific until the soft reboot. They took a bit too long to bring Storm to the fore but Hugh and Famke had great chemistry. I felt that the characterisation in the four prequel movies was just too beige and the focus on Charles, Magneto, Quicksilver, and Mystique seriously detracted from making them proper X-Men movies.

Maybe some of the cosmic imagery from Dark Phoenix could be sewn into X3 to hint at an external force influencing Jean. Maybe some of the teaser imagery from Apocalypse could be used somewhere, alongside some of the Cable footage from Deadpool 2, laying the ground for a decent re-telling of the Apocalypse story.

But I think as the existing movies stand, X1-3, the Wolverine, and DoFP do fit together well, book-ending Jean and Logan’s story, and New Mutants and Logan lay some decent groundwork for Mr Sinister’s story. We just need a decent Marauders movie!

I think X1-3, the Wolverine, DoFP, New Mutants, and Logan make a good overall narrative with minimal contradictions but we are missing a bridging story involving Sinister and the ‘destruction’ of at least some of the X-Men referred to in Logan. I would love to see the Marauders Massacre done right, or maybe Secret Wars, although the real implication was that perhaps Onslaught had been the one who had killed the X-Men…

Star Trek: TMP Edit <em>Not Dead yet!</em> (a work in progress)

Do you think it is going to be worth revamping using the upcoming bluray as a base? I tried ripping the Theatrical Cut in the recent boxed set and it is a much cleaner, brighter print. I am still intending to try and make a DE/SLV hybrid but I hit a stumbling block in that my dvd ripper gives up half way through the Theatrical Cut and saves only the German soundtrack…

At this point I will only need the extra scenes in Sickbay on top of what should be in the upcoming DE but it would be nice to have the whole thing to play with. It would be especially cool to have a clean copy of the soundtrack to play with in some edited scenes.

Idea: an X 3 edit...
Time

Just reviewing these X-Men posts. Apologies for being 15 years behind the curve. I think X1-3, the Wolverine, and DoFP make a great arc. I would love to an improved version.

For Cyclops, if it’s possible to show shots of Essex labs in a second post credits scene with a cryo tubes marked Scott Summers and/or Jean Grey, I think that would work for me. It teases their resurrection and leads to the lore for Cable.

The new bluray version of the Theatrical release looks amazing. I think I might have a go at upscaling and stitching in the key missing scenes from the SLV.

i would love to see it

I hit a snag in that my laptop is not currently recognising my bluray player so I can’t make a start.

Here are the current rough versions. I would like another crack at some of the head transfers, and sound levels for the imported dialogue need equalising.

It looks (and sounds) promising. I’m always open to new cuts of TMP, because i love this movie so much.
Grateful thanks for this and i’m looking forward to your progress.

Thank you. It sort of spiralled out of control during lockdown. Originally I was just planning on doing a DE / SLV hybrid but I wanted to give Grace Lee Whitney a cameo in the second half of the movie because I think it was a shame to bring her back and use her so little. My plan to give her a simple close up during the cloud scene didn’t really work because every inch of the bridge is covered during the scene and I couldn’t do a long shot establishing her entering the bridge.

So I decided to extend the scene in Kirk’s quarters and have Rand pop in while Kirk and McCoy watch Decker and Ilia. I had no clue what I was doing. I went through the TOS scripts for dialogue that could be useful and found lines from Balance of Terror, Miri, Spock’s Brain, and Is There Truth in No Beauty to add some dialogue. I then manually pasted the lip sync and neck movement for Rand in Gimp using layers and then ran it through Deepfake. It’s not very smooth but I am still astonished it even looks passable considering that I was totally winging it.

Then I came across a line from World Enough and Time which slotted perfectly into the scene where McCoy beams in so I used Wav2lip and Deepfake to add a line for Rand there too.

Then I went full crazy and started to wonder if I could stitch back in the rough Memory Wall footage. I had to manually paste the original space suit over the close ups of Kirk from the DE (apart from the rear shot) and I found that the soundtrack from the cloud fitted really well, running almost perfectly to time with the second half of the scene in Ilia’s quarters. But the scene was long and boring with no dialogue and with all the shots of Spock on his own in a different space suit, I wondered if I could make use of a different character in his original spacesuit. Since engineering suits are red and I had already trained Deepfake for Rand, I decided to experiment using Character Creator to apply a layer of Deepfake to a CGI avatar of her which I could paste inside Spock’s helmet. I used IMDB to look for some of Grace’s earlier appearances for dialogue that might make some kind of sense and I used a Vocoder to try and train (badly) dialogue from the original script for the scene.

I’d still like to try and improve it some more, especially the scene where Spock is tumbling through V’Ger and maybe try to get Rand’s close up to look smoother using After Effects.

I’ve been playing with the DE, SLV, and outtakes from the DVD. This is my latest attempt at the Memory Wall scene.

https://youtu.be/-evql7WVEfo

Still lots of challenges but it has been a fun project. I couldn’t get my vocoder to train Grace Lee Whitney’s voice so atm any dialogue I wasn’t able to crib from appearances in other shows is using a pre-trained model. If anyone has a functional vocoder and would be willing to have a go, that would be awesome!

Quality may not be great though as I have only been able to scrape together about 20 minutes of dialogue.

I found that the colour difference on my HD version is more jarring that the quality issue. Most of the additional scenes are quite brief. That said, my eyesight is not great. I still haven’t worked out how to work with the colour balancing tools in Adobe. It wasn’t until I had stitched it all together that I realised how noticeable it was.

Wow you definitely have a better grasp on the technology than I do. I cobbled together the basic hybrid edit in just 4 days but that was just scaling up the SLV scenes using After Effects with no digital cleaning.

I left out Kirk’s, “Oh my God.” in the transporter accident because I didn’t want the SLV footage to sit awkwardly across the rest of the scene and I didn’t want to use the scaled up footage for the whole scene. I also left out the bit where Chekov talks to the crewman at his station before retaking his post as it sits awkwardly on the soundtrack of the DE. Fortunately McCoy’s line about them being ten miles tall fits in fine.

I think I managed to fit in most of the extra stuff from the ship. I haven’t touched the Klingons though.

It was easy to add the DE red alert claxon over the extra V’Ger attack footage alongside the red alert voice from the SLV. I managed to bleed some of Uhura’s dialogue either side of the DE footage too so it all runs along a fraction more rapidly.

I had to work a bit to equalise the hum of the ship in some of the SLV scenes but it was doable.

Mine is a real hatchet job. If you have been able to clear up the SLV footage, it should look great!

I’ve downloaded and added the edited scene with the digital Enterprise. It looks pretty good, although the sound quality in the airlock is poor. A better sound effect for the doors is needed too. I’ve added additional dialogue outside (a conversation between Kirk, Scotty, and Rand) so that it doesn’t drag so much.

I will need to add a close up of Rand in a red space suit to establish her in the scene in place of Spock (who went inside in the previous scene).

The close up of Kirk’s space suit here will be needed for the scene later where Spock returns, to marry up continuity. I’m hoping it won’t be too hard to pull off.

I might also change the background so that the reunion takes place inside the aperture otherwise Kirk has just been hanging around outside for ages.

I’m finally having a go at a hybrid cut, although I’m not sure I will put in all the extra dialogue as some of it sits awkwardly across the music track of the DE.

I’m not sure how scaled up SD will compare to HD when running alongside it on a larger screen though. I used 50% denoise. Also the SLV soundtrack is far less polished so getting it to the right levels could be tricky.

I’ll do my best.

Well, after watching an old version of the theatrical cut at a cinema in London, I am going to bite the bullet and buy a laptop capable of deep learning on Black Friday and I am thinking of investing in Adobe Premier Pro, Character Creator 3, and iClone, Deepfacelab, and Lyrebird (or equivalent).

I’d like to create a hybrid cut for personal use. I’m not 100% sure what is missing from the DE compared to the SLV (excluding scene trims) beyond a couple of lines of dialogue on the bridge and in Ilia’s quarters, plus Sulu & Ilia, and the airlock scene.

So my ‘basic’ plan is:

  • Re-add missing scenes and lines above.
  • Trim the gap between Sulu’s, “Why it’s Mr…” and Kirk’s, “Spock!”. It’s really clumsily edited.
  • Digitally replace Kirk’s space suit to match the airlock scene. (I think from memory I need to re-order the scene in Ilia’s quarters to match the SLV?) Replace the Enterprise over the scaffolding.
  • Insert some additional cloned footage of Grace Lee Whitney to establish Rand in the second half of the movie with additional dialogue (if the Deepfake and Lyrebird results pay off). This is partly because Rand started out as the female lead in the original show and partly because Grace was treated terribly at the time. I lament the fact that she wasn’t more front and centre with the ensemble cast for her return.
  • The basic would be an extra line for her in the McCoy transporter scene plus some dialogue in Kirk’s quarters.
  • If they work out OK, then I might also consider a close up on the bridge during the V’Ger flyover (the problem there being the need to establish her arriving or leaving and a spot to put her in for the long shots) and establishing her on the bridge at the end of the movie so that when Scotty and Chapel arrive, all the original cast is in the scene together.
  • The most ambitious edit would be to add her into the airlock scene, possibly adding an exchange between her and McCoy as Kirk leaves, since that will require a digital avatar.
  • The really, really, really ambitious edit would be to put her in a spacesuit alongside Kirk and give them some dialogue as they head out to the orifice so that Ilia’s question, “Why have two carbon units entered V’Ger,” can apply to them.

If the Rand stuff pays off, I can consider whether I can add a few snippets of dialogue for other characters. McCoy’s funny dialogue was a hit with the audience in London so I considered if it might be possible to add some extra humour. Possibilities would be a line of sass from Uhura when the men meet Ilia, an exchange between McCoy and Chapel in sickbay based on dialogue from In Thy Image, and Spock’s sass about his presence being essential if McCoy is to remain on board in the final scene.

All the above said, I have no real experience with this kind of editing, so wish me luck. If anyone has access to the SLV files, they would be useful, since my only copy currently is on VHS.

I never noticed the change of shirt or space suit. I think my standards are low.

The digital fixes to replace the scaffolding that have been on YouTube are pretty decent. Kirk’s face is basically pasted into the helmet so I reckon with enough dedication it would be possible to trim the scene where he catches Spock so that the suit close up matches the earlier scene.

I want to tweak the scene in Kirk’s quarters where he and McCoy are viewing Decker and Ilia to include Janice Rand just because I lament that she disappears completely from the second half of the movie.

I’ve already identified that there is a frame where McCoy exits the quarters in their earlier confrontation where you could easily paste a close up of Rand but Deepfake and Deep Video Portrait need to bed in a bit more before any attempt. There is dialogue from TOS appearances that could be added to pad out the scene, albeit logistically tricky:

Rand: “Can I get you something from the galley, Sir?”
Kirk: “Thank you.” [Balance of Terror]
Rand:“Do you suppose she knows?” [Miri]
McCoy: “Jim, she may not know or even remember.”[Spock’s Brain]
Kirk: “Its all we’ve got.” [Wrath of Khan]

It’s a largely pointless exchange since Kirk’s voice-over pretty much already tells us this but I just want Rand to be more visible than her tiny cameo at the start of the film and this underscores her previous role as Kirk’s assistant. It also looked easier than trying to paste her on the bridge during the V’Ger flyover. I have worked out that it would just about work to paste her exiting a Turbolift but the background in the transporter room is so dark, getting her hair to look natural is a problem.

Managed to get my VCR going again and had another watch of the SLV. It doesn’t drag at all for me. Even Kirk’s mysterious mighty morphing space suit is only one brief head shot before Spock floats back. Not insurmountable.

I like the background technobabble and computer voice but I think the voices are just a fraction too loud in most scenes. They compete too much with the main dialogue.

I wish Grace Lee Whitney had been present on the bridge for a bit in the second half of the movie. Even a couple of reaction shots during the V’Ger flyover would have elevated her appearance to be more noticeable. It’s also a shame she doesn’t come onto the bridge with Scotty and Chapel in the final scene. It would have been nice if they had all been present on the bridge at the same time.

I think a hybrid version of the DE is probably going to be the absolute pinnacle but I do love this version.

Just involved in a conversation on the TMP appreciation Facebook group about the different versions out there. Is it the intention for the HD SLV edit to include the completed Airlock effects that I’ve seen on YouTube and to correct the helmet of Kirk’s uniform when he retrieves Spock?

Is this the wide-screen version with updated effects? I’ve lost track. I tried watching my vhs version of slv but the picture gave out half way through so I watched my dvd of the directors edition. They both have their merits!
