This is not to say that the person is being uncooperative, but considering the Def. Col. is 9 discs altogether, with 15 sides to play and capture altogether - that's quite a bit of work already.

I wonder if it would be better if the guy with the X0 used something like Norton Ghost to transfer the files from one drive to another. That would be a lot easier than capturing each time. He could have one drive with the Faces set and one with the DC. Maybe there will eventually be enough donations to ship him two drives to hold on to until the project is over. One for the Faces and the other for the DC or maybe just one drive if it is decided upon that only one version is to be used.

I plan to make a donation as soon as I can. We are moving to a new house before long, so funds are kind of tight.

MeBe,

That would be great as it may take me a while to dig out my VHS and capture the scene.

I am curious about which one is better because I've heard both.

A friend of mine used both sources for their project. They liked the DC better for picture quality, but the Faces set better for IVTC. What they did was use the DC for most of the project and the Faces for the side breaks because the IVTC got messed up on side breaks. Here is what he says, "The problem occurs when the segue between the shots (in telecined video) have BLENDED fields, that is, when there is a frame which is composed of 1/2 field of previous shot and 1/2 field of next shot.

A specific example from ESB is where the shot changes from the Imperial officer aboard the Imperial Stardestroyer Avenger saying, "Alert all commands. Deploy the fleet." Then he walks away. The shot - and the laserdisc side - ends at that point. The next shot - the beginning of the next laserdisc side - is where you see the Falcon attached to the Stardestroyer. Well, in the "uninterrupted" version of the video, which I captured from the CLV discs, the segue between those two shots were actually interlaced together in the telecined video (30fps). Since it was interrupted in the CAV version (because of disc change), they dropped the blended field for the CAV release. Thus 1 frame is lost, and is unrecoverable. This is where IVTC won't be 100% perfect for this conversion of ESB."

This link I found says this, "...yes, the CAV boxed set (NOT the SE boxed set) is the best way to go. I have it and it smears less than the CLD Face LD's."

This link says this, "The Star Wars Definitive Collection CAV laserdiscs look noticeably better than the "faces" CLV set, with superior clarity and less smearing..."

This link says this, "When Image originally released the CLV THX 'faces' versions, they were pressed at Pioneer. A subsequent pressing was done in Japan at Kurari. These are signified with a 'K' prior to the item number on the inner ring of the discs just outside the label. These pressings had a much cleaner transfer than the Pioneer versions." That may be the reason there is a debate about which looks better.

I still may buy the Faces LD's regardless of which one looks better when I get the money because I want smooth IVTC.

I'll have to try and capture the same frame from the Faces VHS set to compare. I forgot to mention that the frame I posted above is from my finished DVD . How terrible it is. I don't have the capture files anymore since they took up so much hard drive space. The other weaknesses of my old project besides the quality is that I split each film up onto two DVD's and there are no extras like the commentary. I put all of the DC extras onto a separate DVD. That is why I'm going to redo the whole thing. I will still put all of the extras minus the commentary on its own DVD. I will have to learn how to put the commentary track on the movie discs like Dr. Gonzo did.

Dot crawl is little dots that are visible in the picture. They really stand out in the reds. If you look at this
link , you can see an example. Look closely at the planet in the top picture and you can see the dots all through it. It is caused by the comb filter in my Pioneer CLD-703 not being as good as the one in my ADVC-100 capture device. When I did some test captures using composite, there was no dot crawl.

I'm not sure what is available at the budget end of the spectrum. I remember building one when I was a kid (though it was a line TBC, that newfangled frame stuff didn't exist then)

A lot of TBCs out there can mess with the video in different ways, so it pays to do your research and decide what features you want.
A TBC won't fix problems recording into the tape, but it really makes it a lot easier to get a rock solid capture every time.
I'd go over to doom9 or somewhere similar and ask guys what they are using and why.

Thanks again Laserman. I'll check the site that Doctor M (thank you as well) posted. I'm only capturing the video from Laserdisc, so I may not need a TBC if I can use the filters of VirtualDub effectively. The two or three major obstacles I have are: I only have the DC LD's (Leia footage intact), NTSC, and I'm capturing with a DV capture device (Canopus ADVC-100). I also have a WinFast TV2000 Expert Card, so I may try to do some comparison. I really like the ADVC-100 because I don't have to worry about the audio being out of sync. I just wished it captured in raw AVI instead of just DV.

The only VHS I plan on capturing is just the missing sound effects of the snowspeeder spinning out of control and exploding in ESB. Sorry, I know I have mentioned that one a lot. Those sound effects are unfortunately missing on every THX source that I have seen. I don't have the Faces LD's, but I do have the Faces Widescreen VHS and the aforementioned DC LD's and those sounds are missing on both. I have the widescreen SE VHS set, so I will grab those sounds from that.

Thanks for all of the info. I may continue with my project. It is just that I cannot offer much like other projects which have already been completed and especially those that are upcoming. I do want to complete mine in case it is the only one I can ever get. I have done it once, but I wasn't happy with the results. I used S-Video to capture and that introduced a lot of dot crawl in the reds which looks like the picture on the X0 site of the capture from the CLD-701.

Here is what I have so far:
Pioneer CLD-703
Definitive Collection LD's (2nd pressing that isn't missing Leia footage)
Leadtek WinFast TV 2000 XP Expert
Canopus ADVC-100
DVD-Lab
TMPGEnc Plus which supports dual layer
I also have the SE Widescreen VHS tapes. I only plan to use them to get the audio for the Snowspeeder spinning out of control and exploding. Wonder why none of the THX Remastered sources have that sound.

Here is what I plan on getting:
I do plan on getting a dual layer burner that does both + and - dual layer
DVD-Lab Pro

I may also get the Faces LD's someday.

Is there or is there going to be a list of all the hardware and software used? It would also be nice to have updates of changes to that list. For instance: "We were using TMPGEnc Plus, but have found that ProCoder is better for IVTC." Something like that.

So, I guess I will continue with my project, but I do plan to help out the X0 Project as well.

Wow. I haven't had a lot of time to catch up on all of the projects going on. I really like the sound of this one. I was curious about a couple of things.

1. I've heard some say the image is better on the Faces LD's and some say the image is better on the Definitive Collection LD's. Are there any comparison shots anywhere of the same frame or frames from each source?
2. Is the X0 better than the X99 because the X0 has a laser wavelength of 670nm and the X9 has a laser wavelength of 780nm?
3. I know MVerta is mixing sources from DVD and LD. I wonder how his project would look if his LD shots came from the X0 capture.
4. What capture card was used to capture the signal from the X0 to a PC? That may already have been asked and answered. Forgive me if it has. I just did a quick glance through the thread and didn't see it mentioned.

Anyway, I think this is an awesome project and I am definitely interested in it. I may even abandon my own project because I don't have the money to buy additional equipment right now.

Thanks.

Who has caved?

I would have waited since he plans to release all 6 films together in one set with deleted scenes from Episodes IV-VI that supposedly nobody has ever scene before. It would be nice if he would release all of the scenes from the Original Versions that were changed in 97 and 04 on a separate disc remastered. That is what Paramount did on Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

I am boycotting EpIII.
Time
A friend of mine plans to see it on Memorial Day weekend. They said they plan on buying my ticket and that I won't have to pay them back. My fiancee heard this and said no f*@Qin way and that she would not go. She has heard me bitch about Lucas off and on for at least 6 years now. First it was because he wouldn't release any of the Star Wars films on DVD. Then, it was because I hated the prequels. Finally, it is because he has refused to release any of the Original Versions ever again. My complaining has caused her to have a real dislike for him. Both of us still love the Original Versions of the Original Trilogy though.

That is a tough call. If I could see it for free, I probably would. My friend said I didn't have to pay him back, but I would probably at least buy him a beer or something.

I too will not be seeing Episode III. My fiancee has also agreed. She really hates Lucas because of my complaining about him. . I also have several friends who may not see it.

I predict the film will be a financial success. I wish it would flop though. I predict it will make more than Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi without inflation being calculated. If it follows the trend of the Original Trilogy, it will make less than The Phantom Menace and Attack of The Clones. I think it will make slightly more than AOTC since it doesn't have anything for competition like it did, but I could be wrong. That was a lame excuse anyway for AOTC not to make more money. If a Star Wars movie is good, there is no such thing as competition.

I still haven't caved yet. I will not buy the DVD's and will not see Episode III in the theater. I plan to see Episode III when it comes out on DVD on November 8th as a rental.

I am the anti-Lucas. He can be a big SOB about never releasing the Original Versions and I can be a big SOB for not contributing to the success of Episode III. I know it will make 100's of millions, but my money will not be included.

Changes from ROTS teaser
Time
It is going to be hard for me to break tradition too in a way. I actually didn't see the first Star Wars in the theater. I begged my mom to take me for a long time because she hates films like that. I was 7 when it came out. By the time she agreed it had left the theater and we had to see it at the drive-in. I saw ESB and JEDI with friends. I saw TPM at the midnight showing. I waited until good neighbor hour on opening weekend for AOTC because of previous disappointment with TPM and only saw it once. With the exception of the original, AOTC was the only Star Wars film I saw only once in the theater or drive-in. I saw the others multiple times. I don't count the SE's of the Original Trilogy which I also saw in the theater only once as well.

I have purchased most of the soundtracks up to this point though. I didn't buy off brand titles or compilations though. I have the Original Trilogy LP's, the 4 CD boxed set, and the deluxe two CD sets that came out in 1997. As for the prequels, I've bought both the standard and deluxe TPM CD's, and AOTC on CD. I'll try to pick up ROTS tomorrow. If they come out with complete scores of AOTC and ROTS, I will probably buy those as well since I am a sucker for Williams' Star Wars scores. I've had many versions of the ESB soundtrack. I've had it on 8-Track, cassette, LP (which I bought twice because the first one was warped), and on the CD's I've already mentioned. Shadows of The Empire is the only non Williams Star Wars CD I have.

Changes from ROTS teaser
Time

I checked out the ‘A Hero Falls’ music video on the official site and noticed that Vader’s arms are no longer up and bound. I think that it looks a lot better with them down by his side. That is a definite improvement because it looked stupid before.

I plan to pick up the soundtrack but I am still boycotting seeing the film in the theater. I may be the only one, but I have no desire to see it in the theater. I will not cave in and have not forgotten how Lucas pretty much said FU to fans who wanted the Original Versions on DVD. “Oh, those are on VHS if you want them.” I believe his smartassed reply was. I will see Episode III when I rent (not buy) it on DVD. I don’t own any of the other Star Wars films on DVD since I sold off my Phantom Menace DVD. I would only buy that complete saga DVD collection Lucas mentioned if he would include the Original Versions.

That being said, I believe ROTS will be the best of the prequels and may make the most money. It will definitely do better than Clones since it doesn’t have any fierce competition.

Sorry about the rant. I thought people would be interested to know about the changes made in that scene from the teaser, but I also wanted to make clear that my stance hasn’t changed on seeing Episode III in the theater.

I prefer to capture with a firewire bus device since it is independent of the processor and uses its own power source. I have an ADVC-100 which has S-Video and Composite inputs and outputs. This device is external and connects to the PC with a firewire cable. The only disadvantage is that it only captures in DV which has its limitations with color compression. I never really notice it, but I've heard others complain. This device would be perfect if it could also capture raw AVI and MPEG-2.

Thanks for the information Metallaxis. I actually haven't locked my drive yet. I still have a few changes left. I just wanted to make sure to find something before I used them all. I'm actually a newbie when it comes to RPC1 and RPC2. I've heard the terms, but I never looked too far into the research, so I am glad for all of the information you've provided.

Chainsaw Ash,

I would definitely upgrade if you want to do dual layer. It also burns discs faster. I don't know if that is an issue for you or not. I know everyone likes faster burners, but I have been happy enough with 4x since burning a DVD takes so much less time than converting an AVI file to MPEG-2. I'll gladly upgrade and use 8x and 12x discs if they are priced right and reliable though.

Thanks.

Metallaxis,

Thanks for the information. Is this an easy drive to make region free? I hate how they lock after switching regions a few times. I have a few R2 DVD's that I would still like to be able to play.
I'm definitely looking into this drive and plan to get one when I get my taxes back. I like Pioneer, but I have heard more good things about the NEC.

I'm a little concerned about what I've been reading concerning the Pioneer 109 which is the -R DL capable drive I was considering purchasing. You can read the Pioneer 109 comments here..

It seems for now that the NEC3520A has much better ratings. Both it and the Pioneer 109 uses the NEC chipset, so I don't know what the big difference is. You can read the 3520A comments here.

I'll have to check New Egg to see how the two writers are rated there.

I've been asking this in several places, but haven't received an answer. Where in the official DVD's do the layer breaks occur for ESB and ROTJ. I know where it occurs for ANH. I don't plan on buying or renting them to find out as I won't be using them for my project, but I would like to know where they set their layer breaks.

Thanks.

Patrick
