he presumably signed something with Disney saying that Disney won’t un-do the Special Editions.

How could anyone know this?

But can Disney fix things that are objectively wrong like ANH’s crazy color issues or TPM and AotC’s DNR?

How could anyone know this?

How does your post advance the conversation in any way?

Answer my questions and I’ll answer yours.

But I don’t value your opinion.

But that second one is clearly just me trying to win a fight with you.
I wasn’t asking for your opinion.

There likely will not be an official release of the Star Wars trilogy on home video until the copyrights expire and we get a good public domain release.

But who here has time to wait for the end of western civilization?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_film :

Due to the U.S. Copyright Term Extension Act, no more films will automatically enter public domain in the United States until January 1, 2019, when the copyright will expire on films released in 1923 (and in 2020 films from 1924, and so on).

Isn’t Disney the king of keeping IP’s private though? Mickey Mouse…

Does fixing mastering issues count as undoing changes George or someone under the direction of George made?

As in, he presumably signed something with Disney saying that Disney won’t un-do the Special Editions.
But can Disney fix things that are objectively wrong like ANH’s crazy color issues or TPM and AotC’s DNR?

I’m assuming here that the home video releases are handled by a different company since the buy out. I know something happens with Fox in 2020 but that’s it.

Plus, yes, the prequels are not good in their theatrical form. They are poorly made films there’s no doubt about that. But saying they are some of the worst films ever made is a huge exaggeration, as bad as they are there is MUCH worse.

I disagree that they are any more poorly made than ANH or ROTJ.

Oh boy.

Yes?

I disagree that they are any more poorly made than ANH or ROTJ. I think ESB is more polished, but I don’t necessarily think that leads to greater enjoyment automatically.

The only reason you found the OP “ironic” is because they held a view contrary to yours, and you picked on them.

Your imaginary conversation skills are on display once again. I quoted Fang Zei and laughed at his comment. I didn’t even address the OP before you started in. In fact, I presume you are supposedly on this site out of an interest in preserving the original trilogy, and yet the moment a prequel troll made an aggressive comment towards me, you saw that as your cue to jump into another thread and try and take another shot at a person you dislike.

This is something that 4 or 5 of you do on a regular basis to several posters.

I’m not a prequel troll. You’re letting bias cloud your judgment.

The Empire Strikes Back along with other Star Wars material have shown that Star Wars can be far far more than what it was originally conceived to be. I refuse to adopt that mindset but it’s fine if you do.

You’re confusing different with good.

There are several posters here who complain every time they see the word “rehash”, and then when they see criticism of something “not Star Wars”, they are quick to follow with accusations of “make up your damn mind!”

Something can be different and try new things and still be in the same spirit as the original. The Empire Strikes Back fits that category. It was Star Wars, but it was more Star Wars, and the spirit of the story was still the same as the spirit of the original, even if it explored more complex emotions and conceits.

On the other hand, something can be different from the original, and can be conceived in a spirit that is entirely counter to the original. Midichlorians in the prequels is an example of this latter category. It took a conceit from the original movies, went in another direction with it, but that direction was against the very spirit of what the originals stood for.

It is not good to do a rehash. It is good to give us a new story. However, it would be extremely not good to give us a story that spits in the face of everything the original trilogy stood for.

Reminder that

  1. The force was always biological “My father has it, I have it, My sister has it” (yes, that quote is from ROTJ, but even in ANH it’s implied that he has a strong connection to the force because of his father.)
  2. Mididchlorians are not themselves the force, merely conduits.

This is exactly why we need a 35mm preservation of AotC.

What’s strange is that the Schormann HDTV 1080p version on MySpleen has no tint and no hue shifts (less sure about the hue shifts).
It also has less/no DNR and it looks GREAT. It looks much more like the VHS in terms of color. AotC is a beaufiful looking movie (IMO) and the BD doesn’t do it full justice.

If they really wanna be smart they should include both versions. Either camp is gonna be angered that one is included and not the other so you lose sales right there. Having both at least guarantees a certain percentage of both camps will take a bite. Many SE fans are angered by the coloring of the current sets so having the same SE restored will interest them while the OUT people will finally have their wish.

Honest question: Is there such a thing as an SE “camp?” It seems to me that most either don’t know or care about the difference or prefer the OUT if they do. I’ve seen very few people actually straight-up defend the SEs as superior to the originals, save for a few of the TFN nuts I mentioned who would defend George if he released a 2 hour film of himself taking a shit. But I imagine you might be right in that while any SE fans out there are content now, they might be pissed if it is excluded from a re-release. The younglings who grew up on these films could therefore get to experience the same outrage we did. Or maybe they would just recognize the OUT as superior, who knows? Only one way to find out: Release it!

I’d put myself mostly in the SE camp. The new ending to ROTJ saves the movie IMO. (Not talking about Hayden, though I like that too. I’m talking about the song and montage).
And I grew up with the unaltered VHS tapes!

My theory has always been that both of those movies are from the early days of digital intermediate and for whatever reason translated horribly to their retimings on blu-ray a decade later.

I only ask because unlike Fellowship, AotC doesn’t look almost uniformly worse. Some scenes look worse, some scenes look about the same, and some look better.

Also, I was under the impression that Jackson did the Fellowship “”“regrade”"" himself/intentionally.

Info Wanted: a Biggs edit (with the Tatooine scenes edited back in)?

I’d love to see a BIGGS edit, but also reintroducing the scenes where RED 1 talks about Luke’s father.

I’m surprised there’s not a book or comic (or TCW episode for that matter) about Red 1 being an officer in the republic navy and flying with Anakin in the clone wars.
There’s even a Biggs comic for god’s sake.
