I think he fears himself; what he could become, and what he IS... that's why we got the Dream Lord last series.

I've heard that David Lynch was approached for Jedi (Lucas loved Eraserhead, and Lynch had been quite malleable to producer Mel Brooks on The Elephant Man), but Lynch turned it down -- although I suspect some of his ideas for Jedi (insane, rich pustule-y fat man, as well as probably some of the designs) went into his eventual Dune.

As did I... but even I got rather annoyed when they dragged out Ten's "goodbyes to his companions" beyond the point of sanity, and all this after he already knows he's going to regenerate!
Smith felt like a breath of fresh air, by comparison...
Hope you like Eleven, then; he's more of a "traditional" Doctor than either Eccleston or Tennant... and I love him all the more for it. :-)

It was Kasdan who wrote that, actually; he was reportedly furious at all the on-set changes being made to his dialogue -- but, compared to that line, "I know" is a definite improvement.
