Lol, interesting take. I think Hal already said that he’s bringing back the line about using the force to create life (sans the mention of midichlorians). I think it might also be worth adding back “it’s possible he was conceived by the force (midichlorians in the original film)” to Cloak of Deception while we’re at it. L8wrtr created that dialogue tweak for his edit and it worked quite seamlessly.

The only other solution I can think of with that order is to try to crib Padme saying “yesterday” from her scene with Obi-Wan so she says “he came by yesterday”, but I’m not sure how seamless that would be in practice. Hal is probably fine leaving the scene out of his edit, due to his not wanting to include the second dream sequence (Personally I would just include it, but Hal has certain goals in mind with his edit)

Hal, what are your thoughts on what I mentioned regarding the placement of the 1st “seeds of rebellion” scene?

Lastly, I thought of how the dialogue could flow if you are able to extend the Yoda meditation scene somehow, and it requires no additional dialogue from Rebels or Clone Wars

Qui-Gon: Yoda, my old friend.
Yoda: Master Qui-Gon, into exile I must go. Failed I have.
Qui-Gon: Come to the Dagobah system. You must complete what I could not.

The “Master Qui-Gon” can be taken from Ep 1 and the “Into exile I must go. Failed I have.” Is from a scene in Ep 3 that you cut. What do you think?

I hate to keep bringing up l8wrtr’s edits in your threads, but I think it’s worth taking a look at how he approached the Droid factory scene, which I copied in my “sanded down” edit. It feels brief enough that it doesn’t bog down the pace of the film, I believe he also retains the deleted scene with Dooku, but only after they are captured as a sort of last ditch effort to salvage things.

There’s also the l8wrtr order:

[Anakin and Obi-Wan make up and Obi-Wan boards the Star Destroyer] > [Anakin and Padmé in apartment] > [Obi-Wan banters with Cody and takes off in his Fighter] > [Sunset Palpatine office scene] > [Obi-Wan arrives on Utapau]

It sounds like it would be jarring but it actually works quite well in his edit.

I’m also partial to where l8wrtr places the 1st seeds of rebellion scene (after Obi-Wan asks Anakin to spy on the chancellor). To me, that scene always felt like the immediate aftermath of the council meeting, hence Anakin bursting out his “what kind of nonsense is this” rant. To wedge Padme’s scene in between as in your edit does, feels a little flow-breaking.

The only issue with l8wrtr’s order there is that the daytime atmosphere of Padme’s scene clashes with the gradual move toward sunset happening between the scenes as ordered in the theatrical version. I wonder if that could be addressed by one of our talented contributors here?

I think you’re right that it would slow things down, but I’d have to see it in the context of the movie to know if it’s too much. Honestly I think if you take out the Palpatine office scene, the seeds of rebellion scenes as a whole feel superfluous, and I wouldn’t want to see those go because Padme’s character would be underserved as in the theatrical.

The only other option I can see is to break Obi-Wan’s adventure on Utapau in two, so the ordering would go something like this.

[Wookiee battle] > [Anakin and Obi-Wan make up] > [Anakin and Padmé in apartment] > [Obi-Wan arrives on Utapau, up until the shot of him hooded, stepping into the shadows] > [Sunset Palpatine office scene] > [Obi-Wan arrives on Utapau part 2, begins with the establishing shot of the complex where the separatists are meeting]

You mentioned using SiliconMaster482’s version of R2 being captured by the Super Battle Droids. Is there any chance you might implement the little music sting they added over “hands up jedi!” as well?

It’s a small thing but I really think it helps to make that scene feel more complete.

I also recommend taking a look at their version of the apartment scene after Obi-Wan leaves for Utapau. I think it does a good job of removing all traces of the second dream sequence while keeping what works about the scene.

Shit, you’re right. That’s damns subtle, though. I bet it’d be relatively easy to animate the wrench as falling past that opening rather than into it for a single digit number of frames, if the clip is good otherwise.

I’ve got something special to show you all later today, hopefully, too. 😉

I think it works fairly well and is definitely preferable to the “before the race” scene. I think if someone can animate the wrench falling past the engine it would definitely merit inclusion.

Personally the “General Skywalker” clips are all very obviously not Temeura Morrison and sound out of place to me. However, I do like some of the other audio edits NFBisms made. Particularly removing the honorifics, replacing “Are you coming master?” with “So are we doing this or what?” and adding an extra “Hey” in another scene go a long way toward making Anakin feel less stilted.

Well, I’m toying with doing a V6 for Episode I. Episode I occupies a strange spot in my heart, and I’d like to reincorporate some bits and pieces. In a parallel to Lucas, in all likelihood, having children may shift my sensibilities!
I’m not promising anything right now, but if I proceed, here are my ideas for changes. Feel free to suggest anything else or share feedback.

 • Maybe add a “roger, roger” to the commander droid responding to a hologram of the Neimodians, in order to include one somewhere (and possible do the same elsewhere if there’s another spot where a droid takes an order from the living being, but not the first ‘treaty’ scene which is already cut out)
 • Reinstate Jar Jar sticking his tongue out at Qui-Gon in Watto’s shop
 • Reinstate Jar Jar snatching apples with his tongue at dinner ( https://youtu.be/2df6x2YEeu8?t=33 )
 • Put in truncated “it’s working, it’s working” scene
 • Ditch the ‘morning before the race’ deleted scene in light of the previous change
 • Maybe put back in “let’s go left” and “I’ll try spinning, that’s a good trick”
 • Add “when in trouble, gungans go to sacred place” as voiceover as they approach the Gungan shelter area (idea from MalaStrana)
 • I might edit the podrace completely differently, ditching the musical score I added. I did it originally in 2006 and was fond of it, but it might be better without it and not edited specifically to fit the music

My color correction needs are very simple, but does anyone feel like making a LUT I can use to just tidy up the image overall? Just to tone down the red from the BluRay, and whatever else would make for a good universal setting to apply to the whole film.

I’m a fan of re-editing the podrace and swapping the “before the race” scene with a trimmed down “it’s working, it’s working” scene. I like the idea of adding in one roger-roger. Not sure that I’m a fan of reinstating those JarJar moments or Anakin lines.

Excited that a V6 of this is happening. Would be interesting to see a workprint. Moving the ‘Plot to destroy the Jedi’ scene seems like it might address some of the issues I have with flow in that part of the edit.

I’d love to see you reinstate some of the Yoda/Palpatine fight, mainly just to break up the fight on Mustafar. But I know you have your reasons for cutting it.

Could you revisit the vocal pitch effects on the Battle Droid that says “hands up Jedi”? I get that you’re trying to make him sound less squeaky, but right now his voice sounds audibly deeper than any other battle droid in these films.

Here’s a weird potential idea. What do you think of making the brief “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” Millennium Falcon cameo look more like it’s appearance in Solo?

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **

My understanding is that Ady is free to incorporate things he likes from the new films, prequel films or animated series (the interior of the Falcon, Chopper’s cameo) but the films themselves aren’t “canon” to the Revisited Trilogy and he can and will contradict them if he feels that’s what’s best for his edits.

I don’t know I would call that “easy”, I can send you my project files and you can see what you can make of it if you like. In any case, we have a very good opportunity to scan this film now if the print is purchased.

I would want to have the original raw files (Maybe a .ts or .mp4 file?) of the Austrian 720p HDTV record “Die dunkle Bedrohung” from ORF1 from 2013 (or earlier) in best possible quality.

The only available recording of the Austrian ORF1 version is 480p.

I already have that 480p version, but there should be a European 720p HDTV record.

There should, but there isn’t.

it ought to be here

Any alternatives to tsmuxer for losslessly converting a mkv to BD iso?

It’s not 1280x720 or 1920x1080. That is, the letterboxing is cropped off, but Blu-Ray format requires a full 1920x1080 or 1280x720 frame size, so black bars are necessary.

facepalm Don’t know why I didn’t think of that. Thanks. I just assumed it was blu-ray complaint for some reason.

I’m still not sure what’s going on with Hal’s but maybe I should just bite the bullet and re-encode.

I’ve been running into a lot of problems with tsmuxer flat-out not working lately and I was wondering if anyone has experience with alternatives. I’m trying to put ESB Revisited and Hal’s edits on BD and not having much luck. Adywan’s converts to an iso just fine but shows no video when I play it on my PS4 (audio works fine). Hal’s TFA edit just stops at 90% due to an undisclosed error.

Here’s the final dewback scene, for anyone still uncertain about it. If you do a direct comparison with the OOT version, it merely looks like the SE has chosen to minimally enhance the background dewback. The original shot was very static.

Even though I don’t mind the SE scene, I have to admit that this looks pretty seamless now. Good work!

Have you considered using kk650’s semi-specialized edition as a base for ESB? I know earlier versions of his work on the OT skewed pretty yellow but the latest 2.6 version looks about as good as a blanket color-correction on ESB will ever look. I don’t think it’s possible to do much better without going shot-by-shot like Adywan.

As an added bonus, all you really need to do on that version is swap out the wampa scene and adywan’s emperor. The rest is already done.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

So I’ve been thinking about the entrance into Mos Eisley, and wondering how feasible it would be to recreate the Adywan version of this sequence in HD. Hal, I think your solution of completely ommiting the helicopter shot is elegant, but it kind of takes away from the feeling that Mos Eisley is a bustling spaceport, which is what I think the special edition was trying to establish. It also has the side effect of making the Tatooine shot at the end of ROTJ feel more foreign, since we’d never really seen Tatooine from that vantage point earlier in the trilogy.

I’m also wondering why you choose to remove the special edition sequence of the Stormtroopers on dewback searching for evidence of the crashed pod. I know that the CGI is a little rough by today’s standards, but this scene at least shows that the empire is putting some might behind the search for the stolen plans, which doesn’t really feel apparent in the original theatrical cut. The larger landing party feels more appropriate to me, especially considering the number of troopers we see later on.

I also felt your usage of slowed down and reversed footage to alter the timing of the scene was a little jarring, as the trooper and the dewback seem to freeze in place for a few moments.

Of course, it’s your edit and these are your decisions to make. Perhaps I will try my hand at a hybrid ANH down the line.

With snooker having left for perhaps a long period of time for sanity’s sake, the hyperspace sequence is in a state of uncertainty. Sir Ridley has said he would like to tackle it, so we will see what happens.
I hope snooker gets to feeling better; none of this nonsense is worth real life trouble. Hopefully when he does come back, Ridley will be able to surprise him with a completed version of it.

I would like to do an updated version of ESB, using a higher quality source than Adywan’s old 1997 SE recreation. If DrDre ever publishes a finished version of his ESB SE regrade, that’d be perfect. The 1997 color timing feels so right, so that’s more important to me than technical picture quality (same as AOTC).

ROTJ will still need to wait on a primary source, most probably Adywan’s preliminary regrade.

I’d be fine with a V1 excluding the hyperspace sequence since it seems to push the boundaries of the project’s goals anyway. That way you can have a more radical V2 but still keep the V1 around for those who’d be interested, similar to your ST edits.
