STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time

Sorry, I didn't want to sound rude in any way. I was just exhausted from new year's day and the fact that I containered all 80 files for three days with no effort. I already did report the misleading information within the links on that fan-site.

I already burned a NTSC-DVD-9 but wasn't happy and couldn't access all features as I recall (might be down to hardware). But PAL also has a higher framerate than NTSC so I would like to compare both DVDs to each other.

In torrent it is 69% complete and I had the last successful data-run a couple of weeks(!) ago. It has stalled but already displays the size of the full image so I could report it here in case someone is misleaded or wants to enter it as a torrent. However I inspect the site now and have a look at the changes you mentioned. Thanks for your help and a happy new year!

To compare a score with a length of 100 minutes in two versions and in comparison to the original in three versions - RSO, Arista-Anthology, Sony-SE - an evaluation of the work takes three or four times the length of the score. And it requires very much attention and concentration. In terms of time it requires at least 4 hours (240 minutes only).

Such an evaluation that this set so richly deserves is much more time demanding than watching a movie. It is also more demanding to spot and explain the differences in music than in a movie. It requires patience from all of us.
Just an explanation to help exile some clouds from someone's mind.

The site I have been pointed to contains 5 links for DVD, 2 of those are PAL. Both PAL-links have the same link to a single-layer-DVD, called PAL_SL_DVD despite the fact that one should be PAL_DL_DVD for double layer.

Someone pointed out I shall try to load that container. I did. Instead of PAL it included NTSC-files - the file size I mentioned. The NTSC-file size is identical to the file available in torrent. NTSC-file is 100% complete in torrent. No problem.

Torrent also has a PAL-file (this is where I got the file size from). I tried that file but it is incomplete within torrent (69%). Despite the fact it is incomplete within torrent the file-dimensions of that PAL-file are already written on the HDD (this is where I got the file size from!). It is incomplete and unavailable anywhere else. That's the problem I'm talking about.

I never argued that the NTSC-file and the PAL-file had to be identical. Never.

Unfortunately it has been a waste of time and a PAL-DVD-9 is currently unavailable on the site I've found. From what I have noticed via a torr.-check is that a PAL.iso is available but incomplete. Where can I find the PAL.iso?

Here are the two different iso-sizes:

NTSC: 8.166.532 KB (8.362.528.768 Bytes)
PAL: 8.114.144 KB (8.308.883.456 Bytes)

The youtube-clip displaying indicating a snowstorm on Hoth's surface, looks great! It's one of those nice subtle changes the official Special Edition was short of because it "needed" to be obvious (Mos Eisley gags).

The original version with the blue blackground in the opening looks like there is a swimming-pool outside and Chewie is crying because Han and Luke having fun in it without him.

Critiscism is more than welcome.

Without it our thinking and work would come to a standstill. In every matter you notice what IS and what IS NOT (thesis and antithesis) and come to a result on a higher level (synthesis). It's called dialectic (=> Hegel, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G._W._F._Hegel).

However, I just listened to Tracks 11 +12 on CD 2. Both have some crackle in it as this is material used from the RSO LP. The RSO LP is mentioned in the remixing-details of Track 11 (Hyperspace) only, while the LP was not used for Track 12 (Finale) according to the details.txt. This track also has some crackle noise in it. How come that the RSO CD used for Track 12 contains such noise?

"shouting" - What do you mean exactly?

I'm visiting this thread on a daily basis but I'm busy with other things, unfortunately. Otherwise I would have laid back and had a sound check. When you're 30+ days are getting shorter. :-/

Left picture shall be fixed.

While it might look convincing to people living in 1980 (and those days home video technology) it is totally unconvincing 30 years later especially considering it is communication within the vessel. An organisation like the Empire that is capable of building ships like the Executor and travelling through hyperspace should be capable to generate undisturbed HD-quality within its vessels, shouldn't it? And we are talking about the command section of the vessel: Communication between leader and bridge, i.e. the most important sections!

But you are using the material played by The London Symphony Orchestra in general.

In this case the term "material" meant the stuff that has been played by The London Symphony Orchestra. (the original)
["equipment" stands for hardware: amplifier, CD-player, speakers, headphones; software is software]

You could have decided - as you have worked on the tracks in segments - to put in some parts played by another orchestra (a "copy"). That would have changed the track in general of course. But we are talking about an Optimum Edition, aren't we?! An optimum could be achieved by surpassing the original by a copied segment.

e.g.: I don't know if you know this early DDD-recording from 1990 (http://www.amazon.com/John-Williams-Conducts-Star-Trilogy/dp/B000002712).
It contains an extended "Throne Room and Finale" track (7:57 min.) and it might includes tracks that might be "optimum". However "it's a Sony" ...

"For this recording 20-bit technology was used for 'high definition sound"." (source: CD-backcover) ... those were the days when they advertised VHS-recorders with a "HQ"-mark - "high quality", of course.

But you are using the material played by The London Symphony Orchestra in general. There is no track that includes parts of the Utah Symphony Orchestra (Korngold) or other Orchestra combined with the London Symphony Orchestra - correct?

But no answer in the topic.

Shame on us but we did trust your valuation in such a way that the remark about the volume seemed to be a minor note, I guess. Seems like we got a wake up call and are keen to send the Arista/Sony-mixes in a vault where they belong now.

Actually I don't deserve any credits as the volume was the most obvious to me when I had a brief "glimpse" on the music. I didn't notice that on the Film Score. When I started it on the PC I had to increase the volume on the amplifier which came as a surprise compared to the other alternative scores.
Actually, I didn't want to create another headache for ABC. Sorry!

Its really impressive to create such an improvement with restricted equipment! Why don't we get such clarity in the first place (the official version)? What kind of "expert" is working in the studio? Are they (Sony, Arista) aiming at a "baseline" sound for each kind of player: From discman to stereo equipment?
I mean: When I was a kid I played music on my ghettoblaster and was used to radio music with refrains. Epic recordings like "The End" by The Doors didn't get my attention then. When I got older my equipment changed to hi-fi, and "The End" was blowing me away with its volume changes. What I try to say: Has Sony tried to create an average mix to "satisfy" customer with ghettoblasters up to hi-fi equipment likewise? The London Symphony Orchestra included 100 musicians but we didn't get to hear the subtle tones created by the instruments?!

"It's a Sony" is getting an ironic tone thanks to ABC.

Thank you for the never ending care that you put into your impressive alternative version!

Is it just me, my settings or whatsoever ... but I have the impression that the volume level of the Optimum Edition is relatively low, isn't it?
I have to set my volume to 9 o'clock on my Yamaha amplifier.

Also notice: In the novel this scene ends with Hobbie's damaged snowspeeder crashing head on into General Veers' walker.

There are scenes in the movie that can be edited to create such a dramatic climax for General Veers.

1. We see Hobbie's snowspeeder being hit when he follows Luke as his wingman (1st approach).

2. We see an AT-AT's head exploding.

3. We see General Veers watching through his periscope.

4. We see the snowspeeder approaching head on (smoke missing however).

This could be edited as "the end of Veers (and Hobbie)".

The storyline from the novel does not appear in the actual movie in which the Empire's attack is shown more dominant. If I'm not mistaken the crash is happening when Veers is aiming at the generators through his periscope when his vision is suddenly distracted by the attacking snowspeeder and its kamikaze course.

Confirmation: "General Veers lived up to both his reputation and Lord Vader's expectations by quickly deploying his armored regiment, designated Blizzard Force, into the Echo Base mountain valley and personally destroying the shield generator protecting the Rebel base. Shortly after the destruction of the shield generator, Rebel snowspeeder pilot Derek "Hobbie" Klivian flew his damaged vessel directly into the cockpit of Veers' Blizzard One walker. (This takes place only in the Empire Strikes Back novel, and is not seen in the movie.)"

Unfortunately I'm one of those Jedis from the Outer Rim Territories you mentioned: Very busy and with a short amount of time to study the sound dimension you have unleashed!

Since I've asked you for help via PM I have been busy with work - of course - and had to study how to convert the flac-files into wav and how to create an audioCD. New time, consuming territory.

I've planned to take my time (70 Minutes per CD) to listen carefully to the improvements. It is not to be taken lightly, you know. ;-)

I own the CD-Version from the original soundtracks: Star Wars (2-CD), Empire and Jedi (1 CD); also the Gerhardt-Edition (National Philharmonic Orchestra, Varese), the Trilogy by Korngold (Utah Symphony Orchestra, Varese) and the Trilogy by Williams (Skywalker Symphony, Sony). On Vinyl I own Star Wars (2-LP), Empire and Jedi (1 LP) and also Empire (2-LP with beautiful booklet).
Then came the Anthology (4-CD) in 1993 and the Special Editions (3x 2-CDs) I own as well.

So there is quite a lot to compare and study. I felt that there was always something missing in those recordings: Missing tracks or - worse - instruments. It sounded better than in cinema because the Special Edition sounded horrible in our cinema in 1997.

To me it will be a christmas gift to hear those scores in their regular industrial edition and in the new homemade edition with expanded sound range. I'm really looking forward to it! Thank you very, very, very much for making this possible!!!

I do not understand that there is so much buzz for the fanedit of Adywan's Empire while the remastered Score - ABC's beautiful achievement - doesn't receive the attention and admiration it deserves, definitely.

I would like to comment on the recordings after I had time to listen to them carefully.
