I’ve never listened to a Kanye West song – at least not knowingly, I may have heard some without knowing they’re his – or album. Some people say he’s talented, but everyone hates his personality.

I’m sure you have heard a hook or two through a radio or car stereo and in movie trailers. Probably most famous are Gold Digger and Black Skinhead which was used to great effect in the “Wolf of Wall Street” trailer. If you don’t care for hip hop you don’t have to bother. But if you want to know a little bit about Kanye… he made 5 mainstream, single-heavy successful albums. His last 2 were experimental and when I saw the pablo cover I didn’t know if it was joke or real.

I cannot recommended this site enough. I’m a daily user and I love the interface and social aspects. Here are the lists I’ve created. You don’t have to sign up to view.

Once a month a group of us watch a bad movie on YouTube in a chat room. Tomorrow we’re watching Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. We usually have 10-13 people, we watch a short and a feature, MST3k style. It’s a lot of fun and I invite anybody here to join us tomorrow. Read more here: http://letterboxd.com/russman/list/letterboxd-movie-night-xxii-july-3rd-2016/. You don’t have to sign up for Letterboxd.com to watch the stream, but you will need to create a free account at cytube.

Here is a list of past bad movie nights, my ranking of best to worst. You can get a good view of what we watch.

Independence Day: Resurgence -

(Note that I saw this film stoned so I might have enjoyed it more than normally. Great movie to watch high.)

I saw the original Independence Day opening weekend 20 years ago and I loved it, so of course I was excited to see this on the big screen. Is it better than the original? No. Does it suck asphalt? Hell no. It’s about on par in quality or just a hair under.

I will say that the characters and dialogue are a bit cliched and paint by numbers. The plot is a predictable blockbuster three-act structure. About an hour into it you’ll know where it’s headed, who survives as heroes and who will be causalities of war.

But the good outweighs the bad. The actual story here is smart. The human race survived an alien attack, what is Earth like now? The progression of technology and military is logical and well thought out. And the CGI was decent. Didn’t look like a documentary but also didn’t feel like a cartoon.

Above all else this is a fun popcorn movie. If you liked the original, it’s a good bet you’ll like the legacy sequel. I would love to see what this franchise does next.

7/10

Franchises which left their franchise name behind (or completely changed it)
Time

Creed was the first Rocky movie to not have Rocky in the title.

The upcoming Leatherface will be the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre film to not TCM in the title.

The Pink Panther franchise, the first three have unique titles (The Pink Panther, A Shot in the Dark, Inspector Clouseau) and everything after has “Pink Panther” in the title.
