Info Wanted: What is the preservation project closest to the original 1977 release?
Time
Hey Starkiller, I found another mono mix difference for you. Well, it's different on the "Story Of" LP, anyway . Luke's line on Yavin 4 to Han "So, you got your reward and you're just leaving then?" is a different take. The LP version has Luke use a lower pitch with his phrasing. I've been meaning to mention this, but I was going over my edit tonight with a fine-tooth comb and noticed it again. Looking forward to being able to use your mono madness page. Being a mac user, the sounds have never shown up regardless of what browser I use. I'm sure others will enjoy it too.

You can download 2 hi-res versions of these Rikter covers here. It's a temporary yousendit link.

The order is not reversed on the "Story Of" LP.

Threepio: "Come on Artoo, we're going."

Cut

Han: "Now's our chance, go!"

Also, I hear people speak of the LP audio as if it's mono (or from the mono mix). It is not. It is most definitely in stereo. Dialogue and sound effects take advantage of the stereo field. Listen to Han scream as he's chasing after the stormtroopers in the Death Star or Vader coming through the door on the Tantive before he confronts Leia. Just a couple of vivid examples. This audio is seared in my brain now as I've been working on my "Story Of" project for almost 6 months. Which, by the way, is almost complete.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
Calamari, past experience tells us that we can not believe a word that comes ot of GL's mouth or LFL, for that matter. We all know that there is a pristine HD scan of the OOT in the LFL vaults RIGHT NOW. Who knows if it will ever see the light of day? Cost of an anamorphic transfer? Please! GL is spending $350 million on his new LFL campus. Yes, it is "lame" for them to be giving us an unacceptable version now. But, that should only drive home the fact that this is a release out of spite. I'm still amazed by how GL has nothing but utter contempt for his original fans and these movies. That much should now be painfully obvious to everyone. I will not be duped in to buying these, period.

No, there is another...

Thanks, JD! I used DVD Studio Pro 3, Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD, and Photoshop 7. I believe you're familiar with some of these.

The main menu was composited in Final Cut Pro with a mixture of Photoshop layers and live action with image masks.

The chapter and options menus were done all in Photoshop and DVDSP, although I did create custom drop zones for the chapter clips.

Current Progress

Well, what an eventful month it's been around here! A bittersweet "victory" with news of the OUT has us all a little apprehensive waiting for September. Although I haven't posted in a while, I have been working on this thing A LOT. The DVD is 90% complete. The 2 things that need to be completed are:

1) Subtitles - Incredibly tedious and boring to transcribe. I should have paid someone to do this. Around 25% complete.

2) Easter Egg - I know what I'm going to use. But, if anyone has any cool suggestions, let me know.

Menu Screenshots

Main Menu (motion with audio) - Inspired by the 2004 dvd, the live action main characters fade in and out to the left of the droids.

Chapter Menus (motion with audio) - Chapter clips loop. Pretty standard.
http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/395/chaptermenu8xm.jpg

Options Menu (still with audio) - 2 audio choices. The hybrid mix uses 2 short bits of 2004 audio mixed in. 1) The door explosion and subsequent stormtrooper blaster fire aboard the Tantive, and 2) TIE fighter roar after Ben says "Ninety-Four" in the cantina and the scene switches to a view of the Death Star. This is the most enjoyable way to watch this, but I've included pure '77 audio also.

Things To Be Completed

Cover and Disc Artwork: Haven't started yet but the idea is to make the cover look very similar to the LP cover and back. If someone has the album themselves and would like to take a stab at it, feel free. I'm definitely open to collaboration on this.

That's about it. It's almost there.

Wow... was that Mark Hamill doing the Emperor's voice? That or the the guy who does Quagmire's voice... eaither way it was damn familiar sounding.

I love the fact that they subtlely referenced the fact that Vader was stuck out in interstellar space in that TIE of his for God knows how long..

IT WAS INDEED MARK HAMILL DOING THE VOICE OF THE EMPEROR.

I don't know. I'd say that's Seth McFarlane doing his quasi-Quagmire as Palpy. MH has done Robot Chicken in the past, but it just doesn't sound like him to me. The milk out the nose guy sounds like Seth Green. That would make sense, as it's his show and both Seths work together regularly. DAYV, where did you read that it was MH?

The Official babyhum Release Thread
Time
babyhum, I've found Martin Sitter's DVDSP books to be very helpful. I have his Visual QuickPro Guide for DVDSP2 and I reach for it more than the official manual. I currently use DVDSP 3 and his book does me just fine. The Visual QuickPro Guide is only current for v3. But, there's another title that he co-authors covering v4. As long as he's writing, I'm sure it's just great. Worth the money, definitely!

Apple Pro Training Series: DVD Studio Pro 4

DVD Studio Pro 3 for Mac OS X: Visual QuickPro Guide

Once you get used to the workflow, you'll find it's a breeze to do anything you want. Good luck!
