OK... Help me get started (Mac editing)
Time
Coov,

With your cost limits (I understand those), I would recommend Final Cut Express. It has the same interface as FCP but can only work with the DV format. That should be fine for you learning how to edit. FCE is really a great bargain. It's how I learned the Final Cut interface after outgrowing iMovie, before I ended up shelling out the $$$ for FCP. Try getting an educational version if possible ($$$ savings). I use Apple's pro apps now, but really started my understanding of true editing with FCE.

My suggested workflow (inexpensive or free):

MacTheRipper: Rip VOB from DVD (one big muxed file that contains audio and video)

MPEG Streamclip: Convert ripped VOB to DV format

Final Cut Express: Load converted DV files, edit away

iDVD or whatever else you like: Authoring/Burning

Good luck. At full retail, that's around $300. That's a nice machine you've got and it will do great with what you're wanting to do. And, I'm still working on those scans. I swear...

Kinda. Or at least that's what it's supposed to be, but I largely know newsgroups as a place where people upload files and you can download them.

Interesting. This is new to me. Where might one learn more about the process of acquiring files from said newsgroups?
GOOGLE

That, or you could read this thread...

Yes, I have v2. Unfortunately, this was sent to me before ocp realized that he left out the Greedo subtitles by mistake. So, I'm waiting for the final version before posting. I'll update when I have info...

MoveAlong,

Aside from the subtitles issue, can you give us your opinion of version 2?

Are there compression artifacts? Is the restored footage more seamless than in version 1?

It is more in line with ESB and ROTJ CE's. The bad "blocking" of v1 is gone and, yes, restored footage is much more seamless. The 2004 footage is color corrected and the gamma levels have been adjusted. SW 2004 is SO dark, and it is difficult to bring back black details that have been crunched to oblivion. v2's blacks are a little "noisy" at times. If you enjoy the CE trilogy, you should get v2. Still haven't heard when the "final" version will be coming my way. I'll keep you updated...

Absolutely must have "burned-in" subtitles. The subtitles should also be "in-frame", not in the black bars. That's the way it was in theaters. Here are a few examples of the subtitles I created for my GOUT anamorphic conversion with DC PCM audio. I used "AlternateGotNo3D" with a 2 pixel black stroke. It is the closest thing IMO to the font used on the DC LD. You'll have to skew the text a little to look the same as the DC subs when it's anamorphically stretched. Let me know if you need the font.

Current Progress

The first complete rough edit is now complete and I've watched it on my TV. I must say that I'm happier at this point than I was with TSOSW. I still need to tighten up a few spots, but it's really close. The editing and pacing of this album is frenetic, to say the least. At roughly 43 minutes long, it's 6 to 7 minutes shorter than TSOSW. Differing somewhat from TSOSW, timeline continuity is not always respected. For example, the final lightsaber duel utilizes sound clips from the 1st, 2nd, and final duels. It works fine for an audio edit and moves the story just fine. Unfortunately, syncing video footage leaves us with continuity problems periodically. This happens much more often than with TSOSW audio. Just one of those things I'll have to live with, I guess.

There are a few things going on behind the scenes right now that are going to really make this thing shine. That said, I think this is going to surpass TSOSW as a final product in every way.

Oh yeah, the PCM audio sounds GREAT on my stereo (although I never had a problem with Scotty Balls' original mp3's and can't really tell any difference). The narrator's (Malachi Throne) voice has a nice and deep, but cutting, frequency. Once the edit is finalized I'll start on the color correction....

Well, I've actually thought about that. Nothing's etched in stone yet. I'm thinking about incorporating both albums' artwork in my cover. So, what about "The Adventures of Luke Skywalker/The Story of The Empire Strikes Back" or reversed, "The Story of The Empire Strikes Back/The Adventures of Luke Skywalker"? Both are a little long winded. Hmm... Any suggestions from the peanut gallery?

The titles of the two albums as listed on their spines:

1980 (RSO Records)
Star Wars/The Empire Strikes Back/"The Adventures of Luke Skywalker"

1983 (Buena Vista Records)
The Story of The Empire Strikes Back

I think that whatever I choose needs to retain "The Story of" somewhere in the title just for association (conformity) with SW and Jedi which are similarly named.
