Still, two more games to go in this group, witch  we should win...and so should USA..so,maybe we'll see you again in the quarters or semis (don't really know hoe it works)

According to my World Cup Excel spreadsheet, if both England and USA get though to the knockout stage, they would not face each other again until the final.

That's assuming that, in the semis, they beat Italy and we beat Brazil.

Computer users are advised to be aware of a number of new viruses that have popped up since the start of the world cup.
The John Terry virus: Your computer hooks up with other computers without you knowing
The Rob Green virus: Your computer doesn't save anything
The Wayne Rooney virus: This one's particularly ugly
The Emile Heskey virus: Some think this one is really dangerous, but it actually does fuck all
The Christiano Ronaldo virus: Your computer appears to go down, but seconds later its back up and running
The Ashley Cole virus: All drive privileges are lost

Why the fuck didn't John Terry shag Rob Green's girlfriend?

The gay community have decided to make Robert Green a gay icon, after all any man that can gently palm and caress balls like that is what they call... a keeper.

What's the difference between a cold and a football?
Rob Green can catch a cold.

All these Rob Green jokes are getting out of hand.
In fact, they're crossing the line...

Australia have launched a new beer to commemorate their participation in the 2010 world cup.
Castlemaine 4 nil.

Capello goes into the changing room after the match and sees a steaming turd on the shower floor. Naturally he kicks off, ripping into the players: "Ooo ees shit on the floor?"
Finally, reluctantly, Heskey holds his hand up. "I am, boss, but I'm good in the air......."

I've bought one of those extra widescreen TVs for the World Cup so I can see the ball after an Emile Heskey shot.

5,000 American soccer fans are still at the stadium in Rustenburg waiting for 3rd quarter to start.

Do you have the HDD back?

You could try sealing it in a freezer bag and leaving it in the freezer for 24 hours. There's a slim chance this might get you 15 mins to a couple of hours worth of operation in which to copy across as much data as you can.

There are reports on the web of the freezer trick working, and if it's not going to cost anything then it's worth a try.

The alternative, as others have suggested, is the platter swap. Either set up a donation fund to pay a professional recovery firm to do it, or risk attempting it yourself. What's the make/model of the drive, and have you checked how much identical drives go for on eBay?

And as for audio synching - Belbucus once mentioned that he synched audio to audio, but apart from that I don't know exactly the process he used.

Guide to quick and dirty audio synching: (there are probably better ways to do it but this method is easy to implement).

Say you have 2 source files, A and B.

A is a capture of the audio and video from your laserdisc
B is the video from the GOUT DVD.

You edit A so that it is exactly the same as B - same total length, scene changes are at the same frame numbers and so on, then you save out the audio. This audio will be an exact sync match for the video from B.

Does the g-force have only one grain removal/softening setting, or could that be lessened? I don't really know how that stuff works.

I'm sure it can be reduced by playing wih the parameters for FFT3dFilter and/or MDeGrain1. However, I don't follow exactly what's going on with g-force's degrain stage. I know he spent a lot of time tweaking to get the balance right (in his eyes), there's always a risk that if you alter something, it ends up looking worse elsewhere.

Add the subs, then add simulated grain (from a filter such as GrainFactory3) using a transparency mask so that the grain is only applied over the subtitle text.

I'd vote for this option.  The first sounds too destructive to the picture for my tastes.

...

How does it sound destructive? The picture information (except for the part covered by the text, obviously) ends up unchanged. It's simple maths: if x - y = z, then z + y = x.

The premise is quite simple, although it will take a bit of messing around with AviSynth's Overlay or Layer functions.

The way I see it, there are two approaches you could try:

Starting with the output from the g-force script, run it through a very strong denoiser to completely scrub all grain - but generate a "difference" clip from the source and cleaned video. Apply the subtitles, then overlay the difference clip. This is essentially adding the grain that was removed back in, only this time it will be on top of the subs.

or

Add the subs, then add simulated grain (from a filter such as GrainFactory3) using a transparency mask so that the grain is only applied over the subtitle text.

Double post, but I've just had another thought.

Thinking about the AviSynth script, and the sample of the Greedo subs that was posted - although the font, drop shadow and positioning are great, don't you think that the subs themselves look a little too "clean" when compared to the rest of the picture?

For a true simulated theatrical experience, do you think that the subs would look better "dirtied up" with a little added artificial film grain over the text?

Do someone know if the spelling of the word Wookiee in Jedi has changed through the years in the actual movie subtitles?

I remember hearing that the DC laserdisc has a misspelling somewhere (not sure if it's in the subtitles or the close-captioning).

These are the lines I'm not sure about:

This bounty hunter is my kind of scum... / ...fearless and inventive. Split up in two or not? if split up, should the second line have an ellipsis?

You may have been a good smuggler... / ...but now you’re Bantha fodder. Should the second line have an ellipsis?

My old LD to DVD transfer, which had subs based on the 1995 VHS, does have the ellipses at the beginning of the second lines.

I've mentioned this before (see here), but we believe that the UK TV broadcast of ROTJ had the theatrical subtitles. I've lost my tape, and have so far not managed to find anyone who still has a copy to stick around long enough to grab the required scenes.

And it has also been suggested that some versions do not have a subtitle for the line "I want fifty thousand. No less." (Thread here).
