Playing AVCHD from USB stick on PS3
Time

Thanks, I figured that the FAT32 4GB limit would cause problems. Found a (possibly?) easier way:

1. Connect PS3 to home network.

2. Install UDF 2.5 drivers on PC.

3. Mount ISO with Virtual Clone Drive.

4. Install PS3 Media Server and share the root of virtual drive.

The video seems to stream OK like this even over a wifi connection; however, I'm going to copy the AVCHD structure onto the PS3's hard drive to ensure playback will not be affected by network glitches.

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)

I also have the german 1993 SilverScreen Laserdiscs, and the 1982 Episode 4 Pan&Scan Laserdisc (although this one is in bad condition and has many artifacts that make it virtually unusable) that were mentioned in this thread.

Their quality is fine for the most part but the 1995 THX Version is superior except for the opening crawls.

I could capture these LDs and upload them to the newsgroup if someone is interested, but I only have a Phillips SA7134 or Conexant BT878 based grabbing card which are OK but not great. The Phillips card has very good picture quality and produces acceptable result, but I haven't used it in years.

Hi grisan, not seen you in a long time.

My interest in the 1993 Silver Screen LD releases was as a source for the scenes that are affected by DVNR smear in the 1995 THX discs. It would be great if you could post some screenshots to illustrate the overall quality on these discs.

I heard that there was a fixed GOUT disc available with corrected audio?

The German audio track was faulty on some discs. In chapter 13 of ANH when Luke, Han & Chewie wait for the elevator to the detention area, the announcements in the background are missing - as well as the lines "Ich kann in diesem Helm überhaupt nichts sehen (I can't see a thing in this helmet)", "Das wird nicht funktionieren (This is not gonna work)", "Warum hast du das nicht gleich gesagt? (Why didn't you say so before?)" and "Ich habe es gesagt (I did say so before)". A replacement disc with fixed German audio is available from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainmemt by emailing info@tcfhe.de.

If you reverse the PAL audio speed up you will get a slower (deeper) voice of everybody, which doesn't feature the original voice frequencies.

Surely the original dub was for the film's theatrical presentation, and so would be at film speed? The voices would therefore be sped up (higher pitched) for the PAL DVD; slowing down should restore the original pitch.

I know I should really Google this, but I can't be bothered and I reckon one or two of you will have done this before.

I don't have any dual layer discs at the moment, and I want to watch Harmy's SW Despecialized. I could watch it on a laptop using VirtualCloneCd and MPC-HC, but the laptop only has a stereo audio output and I wanted to get the full benefit of Hairy Hen's 70mm 6-track mix recreation. Therefore I need to borrow my son's PS3 which has a digital audio output.

What's a the quickest way to get the video onto a 8GB USB stick in a form that the PS3 will recognise and play?

Help: looking for... The Eraser Definitive Collection - Custom DVD Edition

Any point of this besides completeness? Is the 'some material not released in any other edition' compelling?

From what I remember, it was possibly the first LD transfer to be on a DVD9? It was originally spotted by Russ as reported in this post.

Despite being a DVD9, image quality turned out to be disappointing. Don't know if the extras & DVD-ROM content make it a worthwhile download.

I can't really blame him for removing the first post and link after the reaction it got.

I imagine the same would happen if Fate Foretold tried to promote his forums on the same site.

7. D925 -> composite -> SVHS deck "passthru" -> s-video -> BT878:

This JVC prosumer SVHS deck apparently features "a Y/C filtering technique incorporated under license from Faroudja Laboratories Inc.". Sounds good, and although it's much better than the results from using the cap card's built-in comb filter, the y/c separation is no better than the comb filter built into the LD player. Dot crawl is about the same or worse, and the rainbows are much more noticeable at the top and bottom of the frequency bar.

However, luma transitions seem to be improved (less ringing/overshoot visible, but the diagonal black edge of the circle has picked up a halo.

Confusingly, while Eraser calls these "Custom DVD Editions", they're actually not customised versions of the 2006 DVDs but instead transfers of the US Definitive Collection laserdiscs.

Mallwalker posted ANH to the newsgroup just a couple of days ago.

5. D925-composite-LG (again, you can right-click/view for full size):

and

6. D925-s-video-LG:

With this recorder, there is virtually no difference between the results from the composite and s-video outputs. This recorder probably has a decent comb filter in it. It's also the image with the least noise and sharpest transitions. The frequency bursts still show the reflections onto the grey background, so this is probably due to the D925 itself - as is the very slight rainbowing at the top and bottom of the waveform that also appears on the other s-video images, if you look closely.

The main disadvantage is the weird interlaced chroma problem at the top and bottom of the colour bars. Might be due to a sub-sampling error in the MPEG-2 encoding/decoding.

The French pre-THX discs came from a very poor master, apparently. There was a brief discussion in Citizen's project thread, starting here.

Laserman said:

I have that set, and the quality is bloody awful - not worth the trouble unfortunately.

Someone asked if it was the same case for the German Silver Screen Collection, but this has not yet been answered AFAIK.

The German set cannot be from the same master, as it contains the original German title card and opening crawl.

I'm going to try and grab a German disc off ebay.de and take a look myself.

Moth3r,

I refer to this one.

As you can see in the pictures, the video quality is the worst of the PAL editions I have, but maybe with a better player, cable, comb filter, it could be watchable... and it maybe "smear-free" too!

I believe the contents of that boxed set are the same discs as the 1994 individual releases - so, according to LDDB, a bad master but better pressing than the 1989 release.

I suspect that it's not worth the effort, and you were right to discard it.

... the "pyramid" edition that is not THX.

As you can see, the Pyramid french edition is the worst - older than the other, and no THX benefits. Has completely different colors, less details and cropped image. Discarded immediately.

Which disc are you referring to as the "pyramid" edition?

This one from 1989, which is reported to have very bad quality, or this from 1994 which is apparently the same master but a better pressing?

Anybody remember which Deutsch disc Citizen used?

Star Wars: Die Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter (1983) [5897-05]

Now I'm very interested in the quality of the "silver screen collection" A possible smear-free PAL source?
