Idea: a Shawshank Redemption Bonus Disc (* unfinished project *)

Because no one in R1 has them and they're not in NTSC for them.
That's not an acceptable justification.

If the material has been released on DVD, even if it means importing from another region, then you are expected to legally purchase it and use a region free multi format player to watch it. This statement has been reiterated several times now.

If you want to convert stuff to NTSC for your own personal use, fine. But if I see any discussion about distribution (torrenting, snail mail, etc.) then this thread will be locked.

If you do have any rare material that has not been released on DVD, then that is a valid fan project and the type of release that we would encourage on this forum.

***//BUILDING EMPIRE\\: PAL & NTSC DVD - NEW EDITION NOW ONLINE! ***

Talking of video games, the Wampa attack subplot is featured in the Hoth level of the 1998 Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game.

Talking of file hosting, I've just uploaded a "quick and dirty" XviD conversion of Jambe's "teaser" trailer to savefile.com. Seems to be a bit heavy on the adverts, but looks OK (better than rapidshare, yousendit and megaupload).

Some advise needed on NTSC > PAL (IVTC)
Time
Most people who live in PAL land do not need to convert, most moderen equipment over here will quite happily play NTSC material, either in native NTSC as PAL-60.

Yes, NTSC (film) is encoded as progressive. The 23.976 (progressive) frames per second are converted to 29.97 fps by applying 3:2 (or 2:3) pulldown during playback. The pulldown is implemented by flags in the MPEG stream.

(BTW I think the GOP sequence for 23.976fps should be M=3, N/M=4.)

I think an XviD version is a great way to increase the awareness of your edit DE (and as a side effect it will probably promote this site, too.)

Personally I'd prefer a higher quality 2 CD version for a film of this length, but 1 CD is acceptable quality and will take half the time to distribute!

As well as distribution by FTP (give me a shout if you need any help setting up a server, BTW) there's the newsgroup alt.binaries.movies.divx - much higher traffic than a.b.starwars - and the old reliable ED2K P2P network.

And MP3 compression will not destroy surround information, as long as you use full stereo mode. (I've seen discussions on whether joint stereo mode will also keep the surround channel intact, but I can't remember what the conclusion was. Probably safer to go full stereo.)

I'd also like to see XviD rips of Deleted Magic and Building Empire, as I think they too deserve to be seen by a wider audience.

*** The Official DigitalFreakNYC Release Thread*** (SW, Indy + Others!)

It appears to be correctly encoded at 23.976 progressive frames per second.

No audio though?

A word of caution - I get an average video bitrate of around 9070kbps. I'm not sure, but I suspect that some standalones may have problems with this, especially when reading off a DVDR. The maximum allowable instantaneous video bitrate on DVD is 9800kbps. The maximum for the stream including audio, subtitles and overheads is 10080kbps. Clearly you do not have space for a LPCM audio track with this video.

I'd recommend you check the finished disc on a few players beforehand, it may be OK.

Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)
Time
If anyone is interested, I've seen mention of a DVDR released in 2004 by "FORCE.Edition", which may still be available on the eDonkey network. I have no first-hand information for this release, but some details can be found on scifi.dead-donkey.com. DVD cover is here:

Just to be on the safe side, we don't allow any torrent site links. It's OK to mention the name of the site where the torrent has been uploaded, and that should be sufficient to allow it to be found by anyone of reasonable intellect.

I smiled at the comment where someone accused DE of suffering from OCD!
