Info Wanted: Faces vs. 1993 Definitive Collection - why the '93 DC LDs?
Time
"Faces" is the colloquial term for the 1995 laserdisc releases (billed as "the last chance to own the original version of Star Wars"), so called because each disc cover has a different face on it:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/russdawson/gtf/dvd/images/3faces.jpg
(thanks Russ!)

According to davisdvd.com, the Definitive Collection discs had some ghosting/motion smearing due to the noise reduction applied. This apparently was toned down for the faces editions. (I have not seen any screenshots to prove this fact is true, however.)

First of all, why is it that every single player that falls down has to pretend his leg is broken or something? I've seen more Oscar-winning performances in the last week that at the last Academy Awards. Do the refs really call fouls depending on how bad the player on the ground rolls and moans? Most of the time the pain is real - these players don't wear helmets and shoulder pads. Dwight Yorke stopped a shot with his balls on Thursday, there's no way you could say that his agony was an act. (Why do we find it amusing when someone else gets hit in the balls?)

Sometimes however the delay is tactical, to give team-mates the chance to take on water. (There are no time-outs for commercials in this game.)

Then there was the famous incident where a Birmingham City player broke his leg in a tackle, thought it was just a dead leg, and tried to "run it off".

Seriously, taking dives like that just seems pathetic and cowardly in the eyes of this American and many more like me. In fact, I was watching the Stanley Cup finals last night, and a guy got a penalty just for taking a dive. What a difference a rule like that would make in the World Cup.... Taking dives to gain a penalty or free kick is blatant cheating, and it is a bookable offence. The Germans used to be notorious for it. It was disappointing to see Gerrard take a dive in England's friendly against Hungary, but at least Lampard missed the penalty. England have won the Fair Play award at previous world cups and our players shouldn't be lowering themselves to cheating.

Secondly, what was up with the officiating in that USA-Italy game?
Didn't see it, but by all accounts it was a bit of a farce.

If FIFA really wants the United States to become more interested in soccer, and you know they do because of all the money and exposure they would receive, they're going to have to do a lot better than that.
I'd give up on the States, you have your own TV entertainment... sorry, "sports", and trying to promote football over there is a lost cause.

A few questions...
Time
If I understand you correctly, you are trying to keep the size of the black bars the same for both 1:85:1 and 2:35:1 images.

In that case, you have 3 options for dealing with the 1:85:1 scenes:

1. Crop the top and bottom of the picture until the active image is the same vertical size as the 2:35:1 picture. You may end up cutting off tops of heads, etc.

2. Resize the picture vertically until it's the same height as the 2.35:1 picture. You will end up with an incorrect aspect ratio, short/fat actors and so on.

3. Resize the picture both horizontally and vertically. The aspect ratio will be correct, you will not have cropped any image, however you will need to add black borders to the left and right of the active image.

Or you could use a combination of all 3 methods; try and find a compromise that you're happy with.

1977 70mm soundtrack recording (Released)
Time
Yeah David, why did you not return and get two more recordings, one sat front centre and another sat at the back under one of the surrounds?

Personally I think that, unlike the mono mix, these cinema recordings are more of historical interest rather than viable sources for an alternative DVD audio track. They just seem to have that hollow, "recorded in the theater" sound.

That said, I would love to see someone collate a list of all the main differences, like the web page dedicated to the mono mix.

The main thing that I've found interesting is that many people think that the 1993 THX-certified mix on the Definitive Edition laserdiscs was
primarily a downmix of the 70mm soundtrack (although the disc notes said it was created from the best elements of all 3 soundtracks). However it appears that there were new elements added to this mix. E.g the sound of the asteroids shooting past the Millenium Falcon, which I thought was from the 70mm mix, doesn't seem to be present. I would like to know how much of the 70mm mix did actually make it into the 1993 mix.

If you still have the original L & R tapes and can bear to part with them temporarily, get them to belbucus.
He's going to have a play with the MP3, but he can't see that a phase accurate left/right sync can be achieved... too many variables, apparently.

Although I think some processing with a pop removal filter would help tremendously.

Due to the way the draw is split, we can only meet Argentina in the final. I heard a report from Argentina that the team they fear the most is England (obviously haven't been watching our recent form!)

Probably because Owen terrorised their defence in 1998 (even though they went on to win on penalties), and we sent them home in 2002.

Wish Owen could find that kind of form again.

Last night was another unconvincing performance from England, although we got the result, we need to improve if we are to make it beyond the last 16.

I'd like to see us knock several goals past Sweden on Tuesday to give T&T a chance of qualifying, but our international record against them is abysmal.

audio cd creation help needed.
Time
Normalizing to peak does not affect dynamic range; normalizing to RMS, if the level is set too high, will either clip the waveform or compress the dynamic range, depending on the software.

Not 100% sure what Nero does but I'm fairly confident you can set it to normalize all tracks to a common level.

Also, when you import the whole shebang into, say, Nero, for burning, you can increase the bitrate which tends to boost the overall volume (I've found), Audio CDs are not compressed, the bitrate is fixed at 1411kbps. Or did you mean something else?

Oh, also, the "professional" choice would be Pro Tools which is a pretty advanced mixing program, but it's freeware which is nice (at least it was a few years ago) and tends to be a system hog.
The old freeware version of Pro Tools only works on Windows 98. Current versions of Pro Tools will not work without the required hardware.

BTW I made a minor edit to your post.

I can cap that off VHS if required. There were two "widescreen - as they were meant to be seen" trailers - one for the Star Wars trilogy, and the other for Alien and Die Hard.

Australia qualified once before, in 1974.

Interestingly, even though Japan are very passionate about the game - they call it "soccer" too!

BBest Compression Technique for Images Sequence?
Time
MainConcept/TMPGEnc, CBR/VBR, 2-pass/5-pass - whatever, it should not affect the saturation of the output clip. Could you provide screenshots of a source frame and the same frame from your encoded MPEG file?

2nd question: Although the video is encoded at 23.976fps, 3:2 pulldown is applied during playback to convert the framerate to 29.97fps (NTSC).

BBest Compression Technique for Images Sequence?

A TGA sequence is just a lossless method of compression, so your source before processing should be no different to the original M2V file.

An MPEG encoder should not alter colour saturation. MPEG compression artefacts are caused by too low a bitrate. I would say the problem lies with your settings in Vegas' encoder, rather than your technique/workflow.

Problems Creating an Isolated Score Track
Time
To get from NTSC to PAL speed, you need to reduce the running time by 4.096% (actually something like 4.095904...

Most audio programs these days should be able to do a simple speed up (resample) with good quality. This will affect the pitch, however if your main audio track has been produced the same way then it will match.

Pitch correction is only used in DVD production at the director's request, because it can add digital stepping. Serato Pitch 'n Time is supposed to be very good for pitch correction - unfortunately it only runs on ProTools, which requires special hardware.

Wanted: Looking to buy laserdisc set
Time
If you want the original editions in non-time-compressed, letterboxed format, I'd recommend you look for either the Definitive Collection boxed set:
http://japanld.free.fr/laserdisc.php?id=5091

or the "faces" discs:

And isn't The Last Starfighter available on DVD?

StarWarsLegacy.com - The Official Thread

Mike, wondered if you'd share your thoughts on the following two queries:

We all know there are colour issues in areas of the 2004 DVDs. But what's your take on the "dark" look?

Here's what I mean:
http://aptirrelevance.com/otscreenshots/images/resized/aofficial-r-021.jpg

It would seem to me (after reading the excellent editorial on your site) that the blacks have been crunched to make the image punchier, and in the process detail is lost in the shadows. If I were doing my own restoration, I'd probably alter the brightness and gamma to match the laserdisc captures, thus:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Moth3r/owkcorrected.jpg

But would it be correct to do this? It could be argued that the original film had a darkened, high contrast look to it, and the 2004 transfer captures the original look more effectively than any previous video release. It is not uncommon for a video transfer to reveal much more detail than was originally intended, depending on the choices made at the time of the transfer from the interpositive.

What did you do with this scene?

Second question: it would appear that the opening starfield on the 2004 DVDs is different from the 1993 laserdiscs. The 2004 starfield has much smaller, less effective stars, and you state that it's a CG starfield created for the DVDs (and went about recreating the original by hand).

How can you be sure that the laserdisc transfer represents the original starfield? Although I see no reason why it would be different, I've recently acquired a photograph, shot off the theatre screen in '77:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Moth3r/Blockade.jpg

From the DVD:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Moth3r/blockade2.jpg

The configuration (constellation?) of stars shown circled seems to match the DVD and not the laserdiscs! What's going on here?
