Progressive / Interlaced, field order?

Hey everyone, just a little video help question for anyone who can assist.

Currently I'm working on a Superman II Donner fan edit. After backing up my PAL copy of S2 TRDC on my hard drive I converted the VOB files to an "interlaced mpeg2 movie file" using TMPGEnc. I selected "top field first", even though the source type is "progressive", (which I always understood to not require a field order placing).
I'm lost already.
The MPEG-2 on the DVD will be progressive, so why convert to interlaced? (And I'm pretty sure that progressive video should always be encoded top field first.)

Star Wars: Classic Edition 2.0 NEW from Ocpmovie (Released)
Time
I originally locked this thread to prevent ocpmovie from using it to advertise the sale of his "product".

Since he has now been banned from the board for breaking the no selling rule, and it looks as if this edit may be made available for download, I've unlocked this thread.

Please post comments, discussion and feedback relating to Star Wars: Classic Edition 2.0 here.

Do not post ocpmovie's email address, or anything else that might promote his selling activities.

audio sync problem when authoring DVDs
Time
The camcorder is a bit more than a simple passthrough - it's actually digitising the analogue video/audio.

Here's your process:
Video stored digitally on the DVR.
DVR outputs analogue composite video.
Camera converts analogue video to DV format.
DV is edited.
Edited DV then encoded to MPEG-2 for DVD.

It would be much better to get a direct digital copy of the data directly off the DVR, and I believe this is what Zeromancer was referring to when he mentioned a USB connection. This may not be possible due to encryption, DRM, etc...

You should check the DV AVI files are OK, but I would be surprised if they are out of sync; my guess is that the sync error is introduced during the editing. You could try skipping the stage where you trim your AVI files, to see if a DVD encoded from the unedited AVIs is still in sync.

how to time stretch audio for Island Mysterosa edit

It's a simple concept, crude, but effective (there are probably better ways to do it but this method is easy to implement).

Say you have 2 source files, A and B.

A is a capture of the audio and video from your VHS tape; audio is in synch.
B is the video from the French retail DVD.

You edit A so that it is exactly the same as B - same total length, scene changes are at the same frame numbers and so on, then you save out the audio. This audio will be an exact sync match for the video from B.

Best DVD Recorder?
Time
Avoid LG. Some of their models suffer from audio sync problems.

Some Liteon models can be hacked to ignore macrovision - but you can always buy a separate box to remove the macrovision signal.

The DVD RAM format gives you great features like simultaneous record and playback (aka "chasing play"). Panasonic models have a good reputation.

New models now have features like HDMI output and MPEG-4 playback - I'd definitely recommend looking for these.

So, you had the PAL VHS tape from Holland converted into NTSC. I don't know what kind of method the transfer house will have used, but I would be cautious about using this as your source. I don't suppose you can get hold of a player that can play the original PAL tape?

I would still suggest that the easist way to obtain audio sync is to match video to video then copy the audio across. If you don't have the means to capture onto your PC, do you have a DVD recorder?

Well, it might be more like 15-18GB for 30 min - it depends how compressible your source is.
And yes, huffyuv is fast enough so that any half decent PC should be able to capture to huffyuv in realtime.
But you do need a capture device that can supply raw video; a cheap PCI card will be OK but the external firewire boxes normally use the DV codec.

Lego Star Wars II - game save files?
Time
My kid loves this game. After racking up some 100 hours of gametime, buying all the characters and getting about half of the gold bricks, he decided to start a new game and save it over the slot containing his previous game.

The game saves are located in
c:\documents and settings\{username}\local settings\application data\Lucasarts\Lego Star Wars II

Are the save files are transferrable between computers?
If so, please could someone send me a file with all the characters unlocked?
You would make a 5 year old very happy...

France and Holland both use the PAL/SECAM system, so there should be no need to do any "time stretching" of the audio.

The reason I asked if you had captured the VHS video, is that it's useful to have a video reference to assist with synching audio. You can load up the captured AVI into VirtualDub, chop/edit it so that it matches the video from the DVD frame-for-frame. The audio saved out from your edited file will be in sync with the DVD video.

Do you have an analogue capture card?

Is there anything very close to uncompressed quality that takes up WAY less space.
You could use a lossless codec like huffyuv or Lagarith; 30 minutes of video will compress to about 10-15GB, and since it's lossless, it will be exactly the same quality as uncompressed video.

However, if your Pyro box is a DV device then you have no choice - you're stuck with using the DV codec.

STOP WITH GIRL PHOTOS (NSFW)
Time
OK, I think it's worth reminding everyone about the generally accepted etiquette for online forums:

- When starting a thread which is to contain potentially offensive images, put "NSFW" (Not Safe For Work) in the thread title. I'll go back and fix the beautiful women thread.

- Do not post non-worksafe images into threads that don't have NSFW in the title. Post a link instead, and mark the link with a NSFW warning.

- If posting a link to a potentially offensive website, or one that contains non-worksafe ads or popups, mark the link NSFW.

- Do not put NSFW images in your signature (or avatar - when Jay gets round to launching the new software ).

- It goes without saying, if your boss/partner/spouse/parent can see your screen while you're browsing, don't click any NSFW links!

- Although we're pretty easy going on this forum, keep in mind that the NSFW tag is not an excuse to post grossly offensive material.
