Here's the final script I used. I've reformatted and added comments to make it easier to read.

Good question.

This version is my disc of choice ATM. It doesn't have the missing screenwipe, line drops or halos that my previous LD capture had. The adjusted colour also seems to be much more "cinematic". And of course the audio is at the correct level with no glitches.

However, I cannot watch this without noticing the issues mentioned in my above post. (I guess I'm just very picky.) Maybe a new laserdisc transfer, using the knowledge I've gained since I did the original, would fare better.

Using DGIndex and AviSynth would be a good way to find out if RFF flags are causing the desync. Using the "Forced Film" field operation, and converting the audio to WAV, use this test script:

video = mpeg2source("blah.d2v")
audio = wavsource("blah.wav")
audiodub(video,audio)

If DGIndex reports 99% film I'd expect this script to play in sync in your media player. However, if it's only 75% or so, indicating your source is some kind of weird hybrid, then try it again with "Honor Pulldown" and this should fix it.

So I did eventually finish my version of an anti-aliased GOUT (I posted screenshots at fanedits.com).

In the end, after discussions in the GOUT Film Grain thread, I only used a very subtle degrainer - just enough to "take the edge off" the grain present in the GOUT video.

There are still issues with near-horizontal edges and loss of vertical detail, as well as the smearing and trails from the DVNR process. These defects can only be fixed by returning to pre-THX laserdisc sources, or a colour-corrected and "de-specialed" SE/DVD/HDTV source.

If it's a gradual drift then it's not a problem with an incorrect delay offset.

It's possible that your source MPEG-2 contains an irregular pattern of pulldown flags, instead of a constant 3:2 pulldown. You could try honouring the pulldown flags in the video stream; I'm not sure how this would be done in Vegas, but this would mean editing in 30i (29.97fps).

Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
That's the kind of thing I was after, yes. I have a higher-res scan that Russ sent me if you need it.

Some comments from a personal point of view:
- The Star Wars logos on the front and spine would look nicer in a silver metallic style.
- Personally I would like to keep the UK "U" certification green triangle, to match official UK releases. (I know it's then illogical because this is Region 0 NTSC!) But I can put that back in myself.
- Remove "Special Widescreen Edition" - that's an old-fashioned logo used on letterboxed VHS releases.
- The running time is wrong due to the PAL/NTSC differences.
- Remove the text about close-captioning.
- Remove "hi-fi stereo" - that's a VHS term.
- Add in more DVD-specific stuff. (I'm not really sure how this should look, but I will have a think and check out some official DVDs.)

By the way, did you used to be DarthBoMan? Did you forget your password?

According to lddb.com, The Amazing Spider-Man was only released on LD in Japan and the UK (and on CED in the US). Japan also had LD releases of the two sequels.

Is this information correct or is lddb.com incomplete? The UK disc is listed under "animation" which makes me think it's a cartoon series.
:: Edit - yes, it's almost certainly the 1967 "Spider-Man" cartoon series.

If anyone ever finds a US LD for sale I'll certainly consider getting it. The Japanese discs apparently have subtitles burned into the picture.

The 1977 TV movie pilot for The Incredible Hulk is so much better than that 2003 fiasco. Both the pilot and the series are officially available on DVD, I think.

I vaguely remember the TV pilot for The Amazing Spider-Man. I hadn't read the comics, so the omissions in the movie didn't bother me and I remember enjoying it at the time. No official DVD, but as usual there are bootlegs for sale by dodgy ebay sellers. I imagine that the quality of these discs is no better than a VHS transfer, unless someone took the time to track down a laserdisc.
