4K restoration on Star Wars

  1. Stills are posted from the original sample video files mentioned earlier. These were shown at industry shows, and to other vendors in the video restoration field. The source files I have are 1080p, which were scaled down from 4k. Of course, to protect the sources, they will remain anonymous.

  2. The source clips in the Vimeo link are from the same source, with the same scenes. However, they did not post the Grain comparison clips.

  3. All clips are WIP. Whether they finished them or not is unknown.

  4. Most mentions of the SE, and since then refer to a private Technicolor print used by Lucasfilm.
    Ref : http://savestarwars.com/technicoloribscreening.html
In fact, it was a private print lent to them for use in color reference.

  5. The current 4k Technicolor scans are being used in private projects, one of which was started on OT,
but the thread is locked, and moved to a private forum. All these projects are hybrids of multiple sources
used to overcome the shortcomings of just one print.

From Force for Change’s website:

"Following the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in the late 1970’s, fans began to embrace Star Wars stories of struggle, hope and inspiration on a more personal level. Philanthropy was very important to George Lucas — he used early screenings to raise money for charities around the world with a particular emphasis on children’s healthcare and education. Over the course of the last three decades, Star Wars fans have kept this philanthropic spirit alive by volunteering their time to countless charities across the world and raising millions of dollars in donations.

With new Star Wars stories on the horizon, Star Wars: Force for Change aims to support the immense passion and goodwill of our fans and promote change through inspiration, stories and meaningful partnerships."

1: "You’ll want to be a part of this Force"
2: "40 years in the making"
3: Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill (Star Wars Sequel tie-in)

My prediction is that it will be something like this:

That’d hardly be a “big announcement”.
Plus, the movie is already in post production.

Celebration, and GMA talk here:

The frame captures are taken from some of the samples used to show other industry insiders when the restoration was being done.

Tests were made on Star Wars, and The Empire Strikes Back. Yes, the clips are higher quality than the Vimeo ones.

And you have said clips? Are they from the SEs?

I didn’t hear anything that implied there would be a big announcement. Their mention of “surprises” was simple marketing speech and and could mean any number of things: special appearances from cast and crew, video tribute for Carrie, gifts for attendees, etc.

I will be shocked if there is any mention of the OOT during the panel or the entire celebration.

Watch the latest episode of the Star Wars Show.

I was still hoping that they were planning on announcing an OOT re-release at Celebration, but after yesterday’s episode of the Star Wars Show, I’m not so sure anymore. It sounds like they’re teasing a surprise appearance (George Lucas?).
That being said, I talked to Jason Ward on Twitter a while ago and he still thinks that something OOT related is going on at Lucasfilm. So maybe there’s a chance.
