$36 pre-order (AR) for all 3 titles...anyone found it cheaper??

As I stated in my last post, there have been some that have done amazing work, considering the source material they work with. However, I don't feel that any of them are as good as what Fox will be releasing. Could Fox release a better set than what they are releasing? YES. But I have to believe that their STUDIO PRODUCED dvd is going to be way beyond what we've seen from the fan-made dvd's. How could they not?! They are working with far better sources and FAR SUPERIOR equipment than any of us could hope to use (including the top-of-the-line X0 LD player). I don't say this to knock the X0 project or any other LD transferred dvd, I'm just stating the truth.

I've bought 2 laserdisc players over the last few years (including a top notch Pioneer CLD-97 player) and also have bought no less than 4 copies of the laserdiscs (including a FACTORY SEALED copy of the DEFINITIVE COLLECTION). I've made what I consider to be excellent dvd's and most of my friends and family think they are great. However, there's no way it could compare to what FOX is releasing!

Again, I'm just as disappointed as everyone else on this board that they are not ANAMORPHIC, however I'm not going to fool myself into thinking that I'm not buying these dvd's. I'm sure the money hungry Lucas (or FOX without Lucas being behind them) will release these films again. Probably anamorphic, probably BluRay/HD-DVD, and probably whatever format lies beyond that. In the meantime, I'm going to thoroughly enjoy these films when they are released in September! And so will most of you!!

--RickWJ324

Thanks for the info. I've also made my own DVDs from a set of factory-sealed "faces" LDs (using a Pioneer CLD-703 which I specifically bought for that purpose). I gave a set of DVDs to my nephew as well, and he was very pleased with them. However.....I will also be buying the 9/12 Fox DVDs, and I'm fairly certain they will blow my homemade DVDs away- even though the Fox DVDs won't be anamorphic.

I don't know about that- even though the XO is one of the best LD players ever made (along with the X9), they're still using laserdiscs as source material - whereas Fox is using the laserdisc masters which undoubtedly are of higher quality than the actual LDs.

In your opinion, how good/bad is the quality of the fan made discs you've downloaded?

That version does seem to start with the pause button on, on the versions I've seen. And yes, the beginning is cut off a little bit, which is the case on most other versions too, unfortunately. But not on the KCCI version - it's totally complete.

So, the KCCI version is the best one?
Hands-down, there's no comparison. It's miles away from the other versions in terms of quality. I'll be surprised if we ever unearth another broadcast copy that's better than the KCCI.

Thanks for your advice- I would have had no idea otherwise!

Where is that quote where Lucas says something like, Kershner went in a different direction than I wanted, or that he ruined his movie. It's not really a well-known quote, but I remember it...

There's an entire chapter about ESB in "Empire Building" called "You're ruining my movie!" LOL

Supposedly, GL wanted Spielberg to direct Jedi, but because of the problems with the American director's guild, he had to find someone who wasn't a member, so he went with a Welshman - Richard Marquand.

my question is will it be more of mr. lucas revisionist history and not what actually happened with the original making of the film.

Back in the day they were supposed to release a book called the making of star wars written by Charles (Charlie) Lippincott and being the book collector i am i've found out that it never was released even though you can find it's isbn on amazon. I would rather see this published because he was there from the get go as the publicist, and was on the set as a spectator. Plus he was an avid flash gordon fan and really loved this movie because it brought back the nostalgia of a more innocent and fun time.

Just like the old documentaries were good honest making of specials not propaganda like empire of dreams although is has some nice tidbits.

I would like to read a book on star wars written by Gary Kurtz or empire by Irvin Kershner because at least they are honest in there account of how it came to be made.

Star wars went down hill on jedi because of the fact of the hiring of Kazanjian a yes man if there ever was one and a precurser to rick mcallum.

Yes people butted heads on the making of empire and it cost more money than star wars but that makes it a far better film. Kersh must have been so sick of it that's why he turned down jedi and this was before lucas left the dga.

Have you read "Empire Building-The Remarkable Real Life Story of Star Wars" by Garry Jenkins? It's very interesting- some rare/unpublished photos in it, as well. It's definitely NOT George Lucas' version of history.

I always suspected that the beginning of my version was cut off- but I'm not sure. My version begins with Han and Chewie in the falcon cockpit, but it's a freeze-frame for a few seconds before the video actually starts moving (he must have paused his master tape for a few seconds on that scene while starting the recording of my copy). My version has the Kenner toy commercials, too. The video quality of mine is pretty good, I think the guy who sold it to me must have recorded it himself.

Do you know which version it was? Meaning what station was it broadcast from?

I'll have to check.......

Not to derail the thread, but ... what exactly is wrong with the current discs' mastering? Pardon my ignorance, but I hear this a lot and it puzzles me - mind you that I've only ever heard the CD mixes and/or what's on the radio.

I've wondered that myself. I'm not an "audiophile" by any stretch, but I'm also far from being tin-eared, and I have always been very pleased with the sound of the Beatles' CDs (?)

But then, I was also happy with Rykodisc's David Bowie releases, which (apparently) weren't good enough either (at least that's what I heard after Virgin got the rights to his catalog).

A million times more exciting- I've seen ESB a hundred times and the duel is still exciting and suspenseful. Even the Luke/Vader battle in ROTJ (while a different kind of battle, with Luke trying to resist and all) was more exciting than ANY of the prequel duels.

"It is 100 percent, completely not true" was her response.

Did you make your feelings known to her about the non-anamorphic issue? If so, what did she say?

I have a 20" Sony Wega (4:3), with a widescreen mode. The widescreen mode is supposed to cram all the resolution lines into the 16:9 area. On the few occasions that I've used it, I really didn't see a difference. However, on a larger set, I think the widescreen mode would make a difference.

But yeah, otherwise on a 4:3 set without a widescreen mode, I don't think you'd see a difference between an anamorphic DVD and a letterboxed one.

A few months pass...
Nineteen years have passed, and we're still waiting for EMI to do justice to The Beatles' catalog.
Those commercial CDs are crappy rips.
That's why guys like Dr. Ebbetts are playing the "X0" role with ultra-high-end turntables and pristine vinyl and getting better results than the official CDs.

Yeah right after I posted that I thought, "That was probably a bad example." LOL

Sound and Vision magazine reported last month that the whole Beatles catalog is being remastered.

As time goes by, I care less and less about the 5.1 surround mix. More often than not, the surround mixes are used improperly and in more gimmicky ways than they probably should be. And with the OT discs, aural inconsistencies abound. The surround mixes on the SW DVDs aren't that great. In a few instances they are effective, but are mostly used to just hit you over the head. Surround sound should be used to create an atmosphere, to make the walls of the theater room disappear. To my ear, very few films use surround sound to proper artistic or dramatic effect. It's all just, "whoosh", "boom", "bigger boom", "vroom-vroom". It gets boring real fast, and this is coming from someone with a pretty fine HT set-up.

I care very little about the inclusion of surround mixes. Sonically, they don't mesh with the film and stand out in most cases as balatantly as the CG additions. Unless they make them acoustically match the quality of the original tracks, it takes me out of the experience. Spare us the amateurish surround mixes and focus entirely on getting the picture quality right...consistent color that isn't oversaturated would be nice, and fix the damn lightsabers! Give them back their cores for christ sake! Give a great picture with a 2.0 mix and I'll have all I need from the OT.

I could care less about a 5.1 track, 2.0 sounds good enough for me! There is no need for that, as for just an anamorphic treatment, good! I could care less for a remaster, as long as it anamorphic, I can live in nostalgia. This is to be the way we remember them! The only thing that bugged me was the anamorphic thing. If this is all true, for me atleast, my bitching is over! I am getting what I want!

I agree with both of you- I'm happy with a good, clean 2.0 mix. As a purist, I'm not crazy about movie soundtracks being "remixed". "Remastered" is fine, but to me, remixing is like taking a car apart, and putting it back together- there's always a bolt or 2 left over that you don't know where to put back. LOL
Same goes for music- I'm very happy with my original soundtrack for Yellow Submarine, thank you. I don't need the newer remixed "songbook" version.

Frankly, I'm not crazy about surround sound that much anyway. I don't like sound coming from in back of my head- I find it distracting. I think the sound should draw you towards the screen, not away from it. But then, I'm a bit of a fuddy-duddy, so don't mind me.

This whole anamorphic development is very interesting indeed. I can't imagine that they'll release anamorphic in France, but not in the US???

BTW, I don't see anything on the French Fox website that mentions the DVDs:

I do like the silver and black packaging it came in, though. Putting better, original version copies in that box might be the way to go, I can't decide. lol

Why don't you just give him the 2004 DVDs and keep the box for yourself for the OT DVDs?

What is everyone's problem with Yub Nub? IMO its a great song with a catchy chorus thats much more exciting than the other one.
I agree- I love the Yub Nub song. When I first got the ROTJ soundtrack, I played it over and over again.

Info Wanted: Has anyone done a Super 8 preservation of Star Wars?
Time
I have a Ken Films Super 8 version of Star Wars (sound/color) and it seems to have a Star Wars trailer spliced onto the beginning. I don't have a projector to check it out on, but from what I can see from the frames, it appears to be the first "teaser" trailer - the one with the 'heartbeat', and 'coming you your galaxy next summer'. I thought it was kind of strange that the trailer was on there- I didn't know that trailers were made in the Super 8 format (unless the trailer was on all the Ken Films Super 8 reels, I don't know).

I also have a kid's toy, that's a hand-held 'projector' that you hold up to your eye. It has cartridges, each containing a bit of 8mm film with a different (brief) scene from Star Wars. You insert a cartridge, hold the viewer up to your eye, and turn the crank on the side....LOL.....the things we did before home video.

We need to do something. This upcoming situation has escalated the battle to save the OOT. I think that a new petition is in order, but the send-back program is interesting as well. And even if Jay does not buy the September release, many will. Its just that everyone here is so passionate, that I only hope that we can do something. By the way, Mielr, thanks very much. You've been very welcoming to me.

You're welcome! I haven't been here in the forums that long myself - only since I found out about the September DVD release. I did visit this site a few years ago, though, to sign the petition. I also sent out a mass-email to all of my friends, asking them to sign the petition and to then forward my email to everyone they knew.

I do feel that there is some sort of movement swelling (regarding the sendback idea), and would like to find out from Jay if he's interested in shifting the function of this site in that direction.
