"but DL burners can be found for very cheap right now."

True, but there are some personal issues preventing me from buying one nonetheless, at least at this point in time.

Besides, if I'm getting one, I'm getting a Sony - no if's, and's or but's.

"it's clear that I probably could never do this to the standard that you guys have."

There is definitely a steep and expensive learning curve, but it's nice to be over the hump, so to speak.

BTW, I'm glad to know we've restored your hope in the Original Trilogy.

"Could you make the XviD using PCM audio rather than the 5.1? I can convert the video easily but the audio is a different story - if it's 5.1 I can't burn it (my program won't) but it will burn LPCM audio. As long as the audio is PCM I'm fine with that. That's why I had so much trouble burning Balance of the Force (which STILL looks like crap since the way I had to do it squished the video; if the audio had been LPCM or MPEG layer 2, I could've separated video/audio and converted the video separately in a way that didn't squish the video, but having 5.1 I have to use another program which can do that sometimes)."

As much as I would love to accomodate you, FairUse only reads AC3 tracks. I could encode it as a simple DD 2.0 soundtrack. The only other alternative would be to get Rik to put the PCM soundtrack on BitTorrents for you. I, myself, cannot: 1) I have dial-up service, 2) the file is 1.2 Gbs, and 3) I could never get BitTorrents to work for me.

I'm see if I could get him to help you out.

One DVD is fine for now - it looks pretty darn good as is. (and I'm not into swapping discs in the middle of the film.)

People here will see how good it looks sometime this week. When I can get a DL burner, I'll make a DL version. It's really not all that hard. Patience.

"And from that base, there are many programs (like CloneDVD) that takes EXISTING dual-sided data and then filter it down for single-sided DVD duplication. If you want to produce a single-sided DVD, then filter down from the original, and distribute that, and this still leaves the option of a serious dual-sided version from the raw data."

While this is technically true, the quality of the encoder of such software isn't always of the same quality as that of a dedicated encoding program, such as MainConcept. The fact that such programs will re-encode the video far faster than that of real encoding programs speaks volumes. Generally, it's not very noticeable (I've used DVDShrink many times on DL media), but it's not something I want to do for my SW films, especially since I'll be receiving a professional-grade encoding program very soon.

"IIRC the people who have worked hard to create the various versions of the Original Trilogy are not driving around in Ferraris or planning a trip to their condos on the 'profits' of any $ or £ they receive for the discs - and nor are they funding any global terrorism or drug empires."

LOL! Well, at least you are giving me the benefit of the doubt.

Seriously, though, I'm just a married guy with two kids that has gotten the DVD-mastering bug, and loves to watch Star Wars. I remember buying it on VHS several times, and being jealous of my college buddies who had home theater set-ups and laserdisc versions back when it was still elite. SW never looked and sounded so BAD ASS!

Now that I'm older and have some money to spend, I'm able to not only go back and recreate that incredible laserdisc-viewing sensation, but I can also put it on a format that will continue on in the latest, greatest technology - as well as whatever comes next.

HD-DVD will be quite a boon - allowing non-compressed laserdisc video as it was meant to be.

BTW, you are all welcome. I hope to have a great version for all of you on BitTorrents this week.

Well, for those of you who like updates (I still don't think my version requires its own thread. )

I just realized I wasted an entire weekend compiling ANH incorrectly (as 29.97 fps, vs. 23.976 with 3-2 pulldown). That being said, it should compile much quicker now, since it doesn't have to change the frame-rate of the footage. I kept wondering why my computer was running dog-ass slow, and now I know.

If this worked for all the other DVDs, then these two must just be bad burns. Look for any scratches or such. You might want to try reburning them, and seeing if the problem continues.

I know that when I use Nero, it will give a warning if it detects something wrong with the files (to the extent that it can determine if something's wrong.) Interestingly enough, I burned a DVD with a Video_TS directory (just to hold the DVD files - it wasn't mastered as an actual DVD) When I place it in my computer, it started playing automatically. When I put it in my DVD player, it wouldn't load. Weird.

"How's the picture quality compared to the other versions available?"

Well, assuming the other transfer is similar to mine, bit rates of 3.8 and 8 are going to look pretty good. I'm currently using 2.7 and 7. That being said, I'm expecting delivery of a better encoder with 9-pass encoding. That is going to ROCK!

"DVD-R DL has been approved for the DVD Forum and should be out in a few months."

Okay, now I get what you are talking about. I forgot that the -R camp was late getting their product out.

That being said, I've heard here and there that the Sony DL burner has an excellent level of compatibility with current DVD players. Anyone know of a site that discusses this in more detail?
