Agreed. I'd rather have the grey background of space than "twinkly" starfields that are terribly distracting. That being said, Vegas has a "restore black" function that allows you to expand the darkest colors without messing with brightness and contrast.

"So is combustion working now?"

Actually, it always "worked". I was able to correct, render, and save a workspace of the first 2 minutes of SW. The next 2 minutes, it rendered, but didn't save changes (and yes, I did update it.) So, I'll just render as I go along. No biggie.

My 2 cents releasing the OT on DVD
Time
"but if the original theatrical versions are put on DVD it's gonna look really crappy. Even in my old VHS version of ANH, which I watched recently, lots of the effects look really bad, there's matte lines everywhere, Mos Eisley looks really sparse, fake and boring, the lightsabers are horrible looking."

The '77 version won awards for best special effects. None of the re-releases have ever accomplished this. The number of Pre-SE versions of Star Wars sold over the past 30 years far outnumbers the numbers after the SE. I guess you'll never fathom how these "ugly" films sold so well, or had such a huge fan base.

"It's like looking at the original 1933 King Kong now, it's hard to imagine people being scared of that and fainting, but they did, cause no one had really seen anything like that before. Now it just looks like a puppet, but back then it blew people away. I made that comparision, cause I watched Kong with my brother a while ago and he thought it was really cheesy, not only the effects, but the acting. I guess what I'm saying is that I fear people are looking at the OT through rose colored 1977 glasses and, if and when it's ever released on DVD, they're going to be really dissapointed because it's going to look fake and pretty cheesy."

Yet people still buy the old King Kong version, and they will buy the '77 version as well. If you don't like it, that's nice, but don't go accusing people of "rose colored glasses" just because they want something that's unappealing to you. That's exceptionally small-minded. People who want the '77 version know EXACTLY what they want, and what it will look like - your opinion of it notwithstanding. If you've any doubt, look at all the people, like myself, making or looking forward to LD transfers to DVD. There are plenty of screenshots showing matte lines, a sparse Mos Eisley, horrible lightsabers, and much, much more - and yet people still want them. You really need to learn that not all people want the same thing. It's an important life lesson.

"Now, using my old ghost removal method (basically using the Exorcist filter, or AviSynth's pendant Ghostbuster) works without any of the problematic artifacts, because they resulted from blacks already being perfect black and whites being perfect white in the captures (as it was the case with the clip I got from you)."

Which is precisely why I wanted my capture to be as neutral and faithful to the source material as possible. I'm glad it's working out for you. Can't wait to see the results.

Hi, Karyudo! It's me - eandtc! Welcome to my other board.

"but I think that's something never before seen in OT LD preservations, and I think the results are pretty nice. Maybe one of these days I should start my own thread??"

Actually, I've begun doing that with Combustion 3.

"This is just my opinion, but I think it would be very beneficial to make some adjustments to the brightness and contrast levels."

Actually, I've been tinkering with those, but I wanted to show the raw version for comparison's sake. It does make some improvements. Maybe I'll make some MPEGs showing a half & half pic with the adjustments.

"That gray starfield is just painful to look at."

True, but ironically, it gives the scene more visual depth as well. It takes a long time to find a good balance in the AVI that transfers over to the MPEG (not to mention the fact that I finally got my software DVD player working correctly. I can't believe how off that damn thing was!) Remember how many details were lost in your previous "dark" transfer?!? I want to preserve as many of those details as I can.

Help Wanted: missing 3P0 line wav required

Well, it depends. If you mean the "AC3 file converted to PCM", then my point was that the original PCM file from the DVD would have more information than the PCM file extracted from the AC3 file. That being said, the center channel from the AC3 file will have less ambient noise, so it kinda depends on which is more important to you - better overall soundtrack fidelity (PCM), or better separation for the isolated sound byte (center AC3 extracted to PCM). You might do both to see which sounds better.

What I intend to do is extract the PCM file from the LD, run it through a Pro-Logic II emulation program, isolate the center dialogue, and use that for the '77 DVD version I'm planning on making.
