Info Wanted: LD FAQ - especially re the Faces & Definitive Collection LDs
Time
In a nutshell, both versions started with the same transfer, but the Def. Col. has a number of documented problems, and the transfer had a lot of extra processing as well. The Faces set came out a few years later, and has far fewer problems.

A lot of people argue about the CAV vs. CLV difference, but newer LD players have digital memory which allow you to pause on a frame regardless of the format. Also, the last side of Faces: ANH is in CAV anyways, which is the most exciting part. Either way, there's a truly unremarkable difference in quality between the two formats - most people would never notice it.

Personally, I find the colors and contrast of the Faces set to be far superior, and having fewer sides/discs makes it easier to capture. I have the Faces set for my (original) transfer, and the Definitive Collection for the extras.

Geek-O-Meter
Time
I just thought I would tell all you guys this. My daughter wanted to play with my Millenium Falcon. After a long deliberation (LOL..yeah, right), I let her play with it. A few minutes later, I remembered about the missile on the front, and asked my wife to remove it and bring it back to me.

When she brought it, she said "Why is it red? Didn't the good guys fire in green?"

I was soooooo tempted to call her a geek for thinking about that (even though she was wrong. )

Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD
Time
"does anyone know a good program to transer a DVD folder file to uncompressed mpeg?"

I'm hoping you don't mean trying to return it to the form of its uncompressed master. MPEG is lossy, so you'll never get back what was lost in the compression process. You could put it into VirtualDubMod, and save it as an AVI.

If you are referring to splitting it up into elemental streams, I like to use Vobrator, but there is a bit of a learning curve. If you had DVDLab, you could just drop it into the Assets box, and it'll automatically split up the whole VOB (which could be problematic if you just wanted one small section. You could crop the section in DVDShrink first.)

There are many different ways, but these are the tricks I use.

UPCOMING DVDs

"But there is one nice thing. Those new DVD cases that have the two little locks on the edge opposite the spine. I know it's annoying to have to pop those open all the time. But when you consider the fact that the use of those two locks has eliminated use of two of the security stickers, I'll take it. "

Ugh! I hate those. I snap them off.

Got the LD rips - Now How Do I Make Them Work?
Time
"Does newer = better?"

With all due respect, isn't that the very thing you are claiming with MPEG4?

"Why did you decide to not follow this guy's advice & not use the X9's "finext comb ever"?

Transfers from an X0 and an X9 were captured and compared by a member of our group who is far more knowledgeable about the technical aspects of each than I (he explained it somewhere, but I've not been able to locate this post yet.) Regardless, the X0 picture came out on top. As good as the X9's comb filter is, it's not the sole aspect in regards to a great transfer. Technical specifications are one thing, but actual experience plays an important role as well. In regards to technical specifications, however, the X0 had better components overall IIRC, while the X9 had a bit more "fluff" (side-flips and such.) That's as specific as I can get for now, as this conversation took place months ago.

"Still disappointed you guys are not sharing with the rest of us. ;-("

Technically, that only means that we cannot legally sell this transfer.

"that's why the MPEG2 DVD standard doesn't really do it for me. (shrug) Sorry if I offended you."

I've not taken any offense, but while I can now see why you are beating the MPEG4 drum so hard, you must realize that your viewing situation isn't "the norm", for lack of a better word. As much as I am comfortable with computers, I have no desire whatsoever to hook my computer up to my entertainment center, and most people don't even have the technical experience necessary to do this and have it work consistently.

Our project is about getting the best transfer possible, and in an easy-to-use format. DVD, as it stands now, is a fine delivery device until new hardware comes around that is easily accessible (i.e. Don't expect a D-VHS version anytime soon. )

[EDIT] I found the information, though I'm not at liberty to repost it at this time. Stay tuned!
