Storing Laserdiscs?
Time
From what I've read, if the LD has laser rot, there isn't much you can do about it. It's a natural chemical reaction, so unless you are willing to store your LDs inside an airtight chamber and can synthesize excited bromide in an argon matrix (Let's see someone get that quote ), you'll just have to wait and see which discs survive and which don't.

"Coppola actually did this once for a TV airing and people loved it, but later he said that it was meant to be seen with "the flashbacks", so any hope of seeing it on DVD is probably lost."

If they occur at the chapter marks, it would actually be quite easy to do. One of my dream projects would be to take Memento and put all the sequences in chronological order. I'm a big fan of this film, and love how it's organized, but I've always wanted to see what the overall effect would be to see everything in order. Pulp Fiction would be fun to do also, but it would be far easier (fewer scenes and very little overlapping.)

Actually, both sets may be used in separate releases. Sometimes, personal preferences take precedence over technical matters, and some people may just want one or the other.

That being said, the Faces set is the one I intend to go through frame by frame and clean up visual glitches and such (yellow tape marks, video drop-outs, etc.) I was a third of the way through my own transfer when the X0 project came up, but that first third looks soooooo clean, it's not even funny.

You came this close to Qui Gon being in the end of ROTJ...
Time
"however Qui Gon, Yoda, Ben and Anakin are eventually supposed to be the only ones who possess this power."

Actually, no one possessed this power until Lucas was filming the end of ANH. Ben was originally supposed to survive ANH, but his character did nothing after leaving the DS, so Lucas killed him off. The "Ghost" stuff came later.

Guinness was not too happy about this change, I might add.

Well, it's someone else's player, and it costs a lot of money to ship LDs and a hard drive across the globe. This is what the donations are for.

This is not to say that the person is being uncooperative, but considering the Def. Col. is 9 discs altogether, with 15 sides to play and capture altogether - that's quite a bit of work already.

"(For the record, I don't see any smearing on either Faces or the DC with my 925.)"

Nor do I from my 704. Then again, it's been a looooooooong time since I've watched either at full speed. [Firefly] "Does that seem right to you?" [/Firefly]

"This is on my player, though, Which smears pretty noticably with CLV discs and not at all with CAV discs."

Again showing it's more of a player problem than a transfer problem.

[EDIT]

I might also point out that the Def. Col. has a long list of several documented problems in every print and reprint, whereas the Faces set has very few (that I'm aware of.)

Agreed. One thing we ran across was that a few scenes, such as Luke with the lightsaber in Ben's hut, had a badly split lightsaber - and this was after IVTCing. This was in the Def. Col. as well as the Japanese faces set. This same scene was intact in the US Faces set. One can only imagine how many other frames are like this in the Def. Col., but having gone through ANH frame by frame, I can tell you that the Faces set doesn't suffer this problem.

Smearing is one thing, and can be fixed to some extent, but if you really want as much detail as possible, then the Faces set, at least in this particular example, looks to be the better choice.
