I got the free trial version of newsgroups/usenet that manually needs to be renewed to allow charges. Should I bump up to the paid version right away? Is that why they keep throttling my download and stopping me at 33%?

Mimo is an *option*, albeit one that GigaNews pushes pretty hard. Others can recommend better programs.

I just can't imagine why it stops at 33% -- that doesn't sound like much sense on their part. Is it possible to view a list of the multiple RAR files and download them individually? Then you could use something like 7zip to combine the files. (See previous note about others' recommendations of better programs.)

Transfer complete. Hardware used: Panasonic NV FS200 HQ, SAMSUNG DVDR119.

One problem, though. IMGBurn won't rip the image. If I try to do a straight dump, it says the disc has multiple sessions. It tells me to use the "build image" mode and select the folder. I do just that, and the program fails while reading the first vob file.

Will try again later.

It's been a long time since I've dealt with a multi-session disc.

Would it be reasonable to copy the files to your hard drive and build an image from those?

There is yet *another* different, shorter edit, and that is the Swedish version...but that's Swedish subtitled with English audio, so not as easily fixed.  The only copy I have of that has terrible video quality - though it came from a first-generation videotape, it was in bad shape and barely playable.

I want to see that version as soon as possible.

At one point I would have said the same thing. Now, though, I think I can be content with what we've got.

My first digital copy was KCMO, purchased via eBay back when I didn't know of any other way to get it (an unremarkable transfer); then I bought KCCI from someone who I later found had been banned from these forums, (at the time the best there was); and was then led to WMAR with its commercials (slightly lesser quality but a valuable time capsule).

And now we have this incredible project. And I think I may be willing to say enough.

[That said, if such a transfer is released, or another of historical significance, then I expect that I will queue up to examine it. But I'm trying to relax my collector's instincts.]

Fantastic second disc, Tasjo.

I can't listen to it right now, but seeing the animated segment in its entirety is wonderful. I'd always wondered if someone could / would edit the footage in Lumpy's viewer, but knew that would turn out pretty terrible.

I'll look forward to hearing it at a more opportune time. And hearing the French that I really *should* understand from high school but certainly will not.

So thank you. Amazing work.

I'm going to try my hardest to make sure that this year is the year I finally see the Holiday Special. I hope it's everything I've heard it is!

Beware. It's not something you can ever unsee.

It was a few years ago that I helped someone to get a copy. I assumed, since he was looking for a specific version, that he'd seen it.

He hadn't.

To those who would say they can weather it, that they're not afraid, I'd remind them of Yoda's remark to Luke before he entered the tree on Dagobah.

I'd be good with a subtle watermark.

The worst I ever saw was with the first edition of Wookiee Groomer's comparing prints of the original and SE trilogy. I understand that he didn't want the project to be sold on eBay, but having a distracting watermark fade in and out every few minutes really didn't work. It was an interesting project, but that kept me from enjoying it.

Thankfully that changed by the next iteration of the project.

This approach does work for me:

It's not too obtrusive, and it's constant so it doesn't serve as an additional distraction.

I enjoy them for the historical aspects.

That said, the only ones I'm *sure* that I've watched are the eight episodes that formed the edit-them-together-and-call-them-movies DVDs from years ago.

I keep meaning to watch the others, to experience them for good and ill, but things keep getting in the way. One of too many things that I *have* instead of *enjoy*.

HOWEVER, I will make sure that I watch these. I'm sure I have a copy, and for the video quality they do deserve that at the very least.

The cartoon was not cut for the French edit. The uncut animated segment contains the deleted "commercial" segment and slightly different musical cues and will be a separate feature on the disc.

Is that the reverse-audio clip that's been floating around in miserable quality? Were you able to get one better?

Only distantly related, I've wished for a long time that we could get a copy of the animated segment that includes the bits that only show on Lumpy's monitor. THAT would have been a fantastic extra on the Blu-rays.

Disc one barely has space left for the menus once the WMAR commercials are edited in and the Spanish audio track is added, so I'm thinking of just including the French edit using the WHIO video on the bonus disc with the Uncut animated segment.

That makes much sense.

And I'm curious: how was the animated segment cut for the French broadcast?

This is what's known as a "slippery slope".  If Team Blu and Harmy are restoring the original versions of the film and they decide to change anything, then that opens the door for other changes or fixes.

I have chosen to put this request on dark_jedi's and Harmy's threads since I essentially just want their versions with this one change, so I figured asking for a whole new fan project in a brand new thread would be overkill. I can't thank you guys enough for what you do, and I appreciate your time.

I  can understand the viewpoint: I remember going into my seventh-grade maths class, where the teacher was inexplicably showing the videotape on the day before a holiday, and feeling superior enough to know that it was good that the "Episode IV" was present since that was how it was *supposed* to be. (Sadly there was no one to be superior TO. If only someone had questioned the change....)

Little did we know of the horrors to follow in 1997.

But as something that just reflects Lucas' own plans with the imminent release of Empire, I can appreciate this idea.

If the project were not so far along -- almost finished! -- I'd inquire about the feasibility of a branching for the crawl only. (Not suggest, merely inquire, but now it's obviously too late even for that.)

But, for all its faults, we can at least look forward to the episode number in the preservation of the original (if I may use that word) SEs.

Gorgeous.

If it somehow made its way to Usenet, I'm sure there would be many grateful. Or at least one. And I'm hoping I'm not alone.

And that's not even the half of it.

Subtle details I've never even seen before --- there's an outer ring on the archway when the circus people step onto the game platform!

And the house now feels like a decent set, a la the Ralph McQuarrie diagrams on the SWHS site, instead of the blurred background it's been before.

Thank you, both to Tasjo and to the person who posted it on a.b.sw. I can't believe what I'm seeing.

And here it is. The good news and... well, the other news.

A positive review:

But the comments on the review point to the following:

And there's a side-by-side comparison:

Sigh.

On the plus side, from the review it sounds like it's *otherwise* a worthwhile disc.

This is the Year of the Little Mermaid, what with her Blu-ray coming out in a week and a half and the sequel and prequel packaged together in November.

I'm excited.

But I know better than to dream that Disney would release the TV series.

Is anyone working on a preservation of same? I have neither the skills nor the hardware nor even the software to make a Blu-ray disc, but it would be a truly wonderful thing to experience.

(Then again, I know that Disney's *shown* them in HD, but are they of sufficient quality?)

Two questions, but I'll put them in separate posts.

At the State Fair last weekend, there was a lovely booth selling all sorts of DVD treasures, including "Song of the South and "The Star Wars Holiday Special". Whether the rest of their wares were legal I don't know, but those ones definitely were not.

I do wonder what the transfer was for the SWHS disc, but I doubt it's one that's not floating around.

"Song of the South", though: is it something I should have picked up?
