Technical Help required for a Fan Edit: 'Sonic X' - with the Audio Mixes...
Time

I have been working on a fan edit of the Sonic the Hedgehog anime, Sonic X.

The show was dubbed by the now defunct 4Kids Entertainment. They changed many things about the original Japanese show, such as changing music and sound effects. I wanted to take the original show while also dubbing it with the English voice actors by 4Kids.

I’ve been working on the series for a year now, and I’ve had some difficulties when it comes to audio mixes. There are 78 episodes in the series, and the first 39 episodes were mixed in 5.1 for the Japanese release on DVD. The remainders contained only Stereo mixes. The English dubs were also only mixed in Stereo, which makes it hard for me to be able to mix things properly. I’ve tried my best at extracting, but I’m not necessarily the best when it comes to this level of editing.

I was hoping someone here could help me in removing the voices in the Japanese version and extracting only the voices from the English dub.

I can provide sources to both Japanese and English versions.

UPDATE: I was wondering if someone could tell me and possibly provide the audio mixes from the versions of Hulu if they are 5.1.

Thanks!

I think the weak part of it is dipping into the ‘coming together’ piece for just a couple seconds before shifting over to Yoda lifting the X-Wing. One piece of music too many. If Luke and Leia can segue directly into it then maybe we’ve got something.

Yeah, I agree. I’m not the greatest when it comes to re-scoring, but I too feel the same way. Luke and Leia’s theme is so beautiful. John Williams truly is the greatest film composer of all time.

The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

I’ve got two things to ask.

First, is there any way we can try to alter Palpatine’s motivation when Rey arrives on Exegol? Throughout the saga, he has always been interested in cheating death and immortality. Wanting Rey to kill him only so she can take over the new order and follow in his footsteps because she’s his granddaughter is way too out of character. Maybe alter the scene so that he is trying to make her give in to the Dark Side like he tried to do with Luke in Return of the Jedi.

The second thing that I was going to ask is if it’s possible to maybe create early work prints of an edit of Episode IX to maybe help get a good view on what the edit could be about. Maybe it’s too early and we should just continue to work with just clips, but how would anyone feel about this?

I just found this video this morning. I don’t know if anyone here has seen it, but user Idkartist added ghosts of both Ben and Anakin to the end. The effect looks amazing, especially the footage they used of Adam Driver. The only thing I’d do differently in it is to have him in Jedi robes instead of his Kylo Ren attire.

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I left this thread due to wanting to avoid the toxic fanbase a few months before Episode IX was released. But I decided to leave my own personal opinion on the film since I would like to share my voice on the film now that it’s been some months since then.

I have been a big defender of the Sequel Trilogy for a while, as I loved The Force Awakens and especially loved The Last Jedi. However, I didn’t like how The Rise of Skywalker turned out, and it unfortunately sank the trilogy’s narrative a bit for me. Of course there’s a problem that there was no clear story thread plan for the trilogy, despite that I felt some threads were consistent, there were still some that didn’t pull through all the way. While I still loved how VII and VIII went about their own ways of being confident and with a strong story, The Rise of Skywalker felt like damage control to appease fans who hated the previous two installments, and felt as if the film and every story decision was solely driven by fan service.

I will say that I personally hate fan service, and while it can be used in the right way, it can also tank the narrative and quality of a film. The film had very rushed pacing and couldn’t even stand still and let the audience take in what is happening. Part of me believes that the majority of decisions were not done by J.J. Abrams. Even if some of them were, it surprises me just how bad IX turned out compared to his great work on VII. Palpatine’s return was clearly a case of breaking the glass in case of an emergency since Rian Johnson killed off Snoke, and even their origins and return were not explained well. The opening went by too fast, and it makes me even more disappointed that Lucasfilm is not releasing the deleted scenes in an effort to avoid fan criticism for cutting them. Rey being Palpatine’s granddaughter was poorly done and unnecessary, Finn as a character was wasted, and even his reveal to Rey wasn’t fully resolved in the story. The Jedi speaking to Rey didn’t really grab me, and felt kinda corny based on how it was done to once again, appease fans. Ben’s character, after being redeemed, was completely wasted, as we never spent enough time with him. Palpatine’s plan wasn’t very clear, and his death was terribly done, especially in comparison to Return of the Jedi. However, I was pretty mad at how Ben’s story was wasted by killing him off. There could have been so many great stories to tell with him, but his death wasn’t rewarding. Anakin had lived a full life and had done so much, Ben had not, and he is completely glossed over and doesn’t even appear with Luke and Leia.

Overall, I wanted to at least show my own voice on the film. I, like many were disappointed, but even though there wasn’t a plan, I still think you could’ve made a great conclusion to the trilogy, not the saga. My last complaint for here would have to be how rushed the film felt to cap off the entire saga, when it would’ve been better to focus on ending the trilogy, not the saga. Many got excited for a fourth trilogy, but after The Last Jedi came out, most people seemed to want it to end rather than continue it. Real shame.

Anyways, those are just my thoughts. I hope some great fan edits can come out of it.

This is something that just came to my mind, and while I still find it unlikely, I could see something like this happening. Episode IX arrives on Disney+ in October, there is a chance that deleted scenes are released on there. Avengers: Endgame had some deleted scenes on there that were not on the Blu-ray. I still find it less likely to happen, but it’s possible to put people’s attention on the streaming service.

Do you think adding a bit of grieving for Ben’s death might help. The film really glosses over it and practically ignores it. Maybe adding slow exterior shots with music of Exegol or Palpatine’s destroyed lair could help sink in the feeling of his loss. Anyone with VFX could possibly add Rey knealing down from behind her in one of the shots if duable.

I honestly haven’t had the time to do anything with that at all. If it fits in nicely, I think an underplayed, nonchoral allusion to DOTF would be cool for the duel, but not the whole piece, I don’t think. I don’t want to use Anakin vs Obi-Wan music either, as that seems paired closely with just that confrontation.

I understand. It’s your edit, you’re decisions, Hal. Take care.
