at one point in time Saul Zaentz actually wanted to have George Lucas direct the lord of the rings movies.
Even before he made star wars lucas was a fan of the books. He even wanted to make lotr movies or get the rights to it at some point and instead we got willow.
Even spielberg another fan of tolkien's work was considered but passed on the project because it was obviouslly too expensive to make. These were the times lucas and spielberg where at the height of their powers the 1980's.
george even folowed the making of the lord of the rings trilogy with great interest and said peter had done a great job with the films.
that reminds me of the fact that spielberg was supposed to direct the first harry potter film and had haley joel osment cast in the role. Spielberg wanted to make changes from the novel and wanted free reign in the project and was actually fired by J.K Rowling herself . He was replaced by the director of home alone. I think spielberg was not too attached to the material anyway. of course John Willaims was there from the get go and stayed on through the directorial change to do the music.
That is a big what if. just like if james cameron had made spiderman and had leonardo dicapcrio in it.

I am so glad Lucas did not get the rights to Tolkien's Masterpiece, because we would have been treated to endless re-releases and revised Special Editions. I think Peter did a fantastic job.

Ok, that's it and now back to work for me.

Like how you export a file to an M2V file in Womble because it only lets me export stuff to Mpeg files.

P.S. Tolkien didn't invent orcs or elves, or ents. He just made these magical and mythological beings his own and constructed them to fit his story.
Sorry to get off topic.

I'm just now getting into using Vegas for this. For the first time a couple of days ago I came up with a process for this:
1) Export just the two shots you want to crossfade to an M2V file.
2) Load the clip into VirtualDubMod and save as an uncompressed AVI.
3) Open the AVI in Vegas and do what you want with it. Save as another AVI.
4) Encode back to M2V using TMPGEnc.
5) Load the new M2V into your Womble project.
The results are GORGEOUS. I'll likely do this from now on, and will use this method to do the wipes in SW whenever they eventually happen in Hi-Def.

ADigitalMan, could you be a bit more specific about this process. Like how you export a file to an M2V file in Womble because it only lets me export stuff to Mpeg files. And which avi codec you use in Vegas to export your clip. Also, TMPGEnc only allows you to export MPEG files. Please help me to figure this out ADigitalMan.

I think I'd like to totally remove the scene in Episode II where Anakin talks about killing the Sand People. The problem is that there's no way I can see to move from the scene before it to the scene after it. If you'll put your DVD in your player and look, you'll see what I mean. The only thing that comes to my mind is to shuffle some scenes, which won't work well for me since I can't generate my own scene transition effects.
Any bright ideas? I'd love to see this scene go, and let Anakin's trip to the dark side be somewhat more gradual.

Why don't you just put a wipe inbetween the scenes, or you could fade into black at the end of one scenes and fade out of black into the other.
