I was reading the Star Wars YT-1300 Complete Reference Manual and it mentioned that their are some aspects of hyperspace that remain a mystery aside from those well-established facts acknowledged by all competent astrophysicists.

What could be one of the main mysteries? I can’t think of any.

Space aliens! 😃

The Purrgil may now get a mention, and hopefully some further explanation and detailing in the coming Ahsoka series?

Those space-faring whale-like creatures that appear in the “Rebels” animated series, will likely feature in some sort of reasoning as to what happened with both Ezra and Thrawn?

Oh, shit! They’re going to link hyperspace travel to the Force, or force sensitive Purrgil, aren’t they?

I really hope they not do that.

Search your feelings… you know it to be true!

I hope not as well, Emre.

At this time, I am simply hoping they come up with a reasonable explanation of what happened to Ezra and Thrawn at the end of Rebels with the Purrgil, for in the Ahsoka series.

George Lucas Predicts Fanediting Back in 1989 (Seriously)
Time

SWOTFAN25 said:

In the midst of listening to the hour-long Academy of Achievement interview with George Lucas, I had to pause the video to make sure of what I had just heard. When discussing the future of cinema and the digital filmmaking revolution, George Lucas quite literally predicts fanediting as an art form, and that it will inevitably will emerge with the internet age and computer technology. I immediately thought to myself, “how could he have possibly had the foresight to predict all of this back in 1989?”. My mind was blown.

Amazing find, SWOTFAN25. I wonder if some of that was part of his reluctance to put out certain Lucasfilm titles on DVD in the late 90’s and early 2000’s? That he foresaw people editing is films, and it would be much easier to do in a digital format, than on tape or other analogue format? Just a “shower thought”, anyway.

I’ll look forward to that, especially the concept art!

Neat but also a shame it kinda confirms no printed book will arrive.

That does suck.

I wonder if Tony Gilroy was told there wouldn’t be an ‘Art Of’ book for Andor, so he decided to do his website project. Or if Tony Gilroy said fuck it, make it all available for free, tough luck Disney?

The choppy and buggy Jedi Survivor game getting an ‘Art Of’ book, but not Andor, does see weird.

Like Emre and adywan said in here months ago, it seems “off” that there isn’t a Disney+ Gallery video for Andor, or Making Of video, or any VFX/BTS videos on the ILM YouTube, as there is, and has been, for everything else they have done.

Maybe they’ll all appear on this website of Gilroy’s? And he’s taking down Disney from the inside? 😉

I have a feeling Cassian will kill Luthen. Maybe a wild theory, but Cassian has to start working for Mon Mothma instead of Luthen at some point - I imagine he will help her escape when the Empire puts out a warrant for her arrest, which will lead to him being brought under her Rebel cell, the growing Rebel Alliance. Meanwhile Luthen is much closer to Saw in being an extremist figure and we know in Rogue One, Saw believed for a moment that the Rebellion might have ordered an assassination attempt on him. It’s not inconceivable that Mon could order that for Luthen, and use an old ally - Cassian - to get to him.

More than anything I think this would fit with the show’s themes. Contributing to Cassian’s Rogue One line about doing terrible things on behalf of the Rebellion, and playing into the idea that figures like Luthen and Saw are necessary to get a revolution off the ground, but are then discarded by the new leaders once it has advanced far enough (“I burn my life to make a sunrise I know I’ll never see…” etc). It would also provide interesting context for why, when Saw sees Jyn again, he suspects she might be there to kill him - if he knows that already happened to Luthen.

It’ll be sad to watch but I really hope this happens now.

That is an interesting idea. Maybe to flip and mirror it, you’d have Luthen somehow captured by the Imperials and the other Rebels concerned so much what he could give away during interrogation, they decide Luthen needs to be taken out. Cassian being the one to have to go in and do it?

Many critics also gave the Prequels a tough time, for a long time. Lucas even game them “they don’t understand the films” before George switched that same argument onto the fans later on.

From the Phil Tippett on the Special Editions: “They’re shit” + £2b for George to direct the Prequels thread:

It is difficult to describe the sheer hype and marketing campaign around The Phantom Menace in the years leading up to the actual release of the film. It was almost as if the film was just a byproduct of the whole campaign.

A lot of companies invested a lot of money into Star Wars licensing and deals on the back of these hotly anticipated new Prequel Trilogy films, which only added to the hype and marketing campaigns and never ending merchandise and tie-ins. And they obviously didn’t get their money’s worth in a lot of cases. I think I remember at the time George coming out “they don’t understand the films”, and “bold and stylistic choices” shortly after that corporate backlash and under-performing merch sales of TPM. Though he did still have a further two films to make.

I think most fans, and even the harsher critics, thought TPM was a blip, a misstep. That Lucas would correct the shortcomings and issues in the next film. Ooops!

I got all 11 Star Wars movie novels for Christmas. Do the Prequel and Original Trilogy novelisations have additional content in them that the movies do not have?

I haven’t read Solo, but Rogue One is a good read.

Krennic has some regrets about his actions that has come to him chasing and recruiting his old friend against his will. There is lot of distrust and paranoia between in Krennic and Tarkin’s rivalry.

We also get the perspectives of each main character in the finale, it made for some emotional reading. Even with the acceptance of futility for the Rebel mission on Scarif.

Alexander Freed definitely added depth to many of the characters, but that is true of most of the film novels.

“Solo” was clearly written to lead to aspects of the UOT, according to the writers at least. https://variety.com/2018/film/news/solo-a-star-wars-story-han-shot-first-lawrence-jonathan-kasdan-1202812392/

I always liked that about Solo. The film has issues, but it will always have that big plus.

The quotes from the Variety article:

“It’s pretty clear, we think,” Lawrence Kasdan says. “And it was a large motivation for both of us.”

Kasdan’s son and co-writer Jonathan adds that there was no room left on the page for interpretation.

“So that the actors knew, and so everyone involved knew, it was explicitly written in the description: ‘There can be no question that Han shoots first.'”

That’s some serious re-tinkering. Fans will no doubt be delighted but what did Lucas think? He certainly didn’t make the initial alteration without giving it serious thought.

“I’m happy to report, not only did George see the movie and like it before, I walked into the premiere with him and he was in a fabulous mood and he really likes this movie,” Lawrence Kasdan says. “So I have to assume that was not some earth-shaking thing for him. Or he’s let it go.”

Adds Jonathan: “Or he feels at peace with it finally.”

Are many of these hate filled YouTubers or on social media actually reading the High Republic book and comics, or are they just trashing them because of “reasons”? Are they still trashing on it, or has the rage and quest for “I will super hate this for clicks” dwindles?

Are there any good balanced YouTubers out there that are doing reviews for the High Republic books and comics? I quite like Star Wars Explained, but he can be focused on the more positive aspects of things, rather than providing a balance, or talking more in detail about the more negative aspects.

If there is money to be made then there’ll still likely be “clicks-for-hate”. The YouTube profit algorithm will see to that.

I do think some of the more agenda filled channels do say anything, even things they don’t actually believe in themselves, just for those clicks, money and appeasing their own fan bases.

But I hope that has changed or subsided a little. Especially for this High Republic era. It does make you wonder just how many of these easily offended and angry YouTubers have actually read The High Republic.

That is such a cool and engrossing interview.

I love that we got to finally see the Cantwell Criuser in all its glory in Andor.

I know we got a “blink and you’ll miss it” scene featuring it in Solo (and in a deleted scene), but we really got to see this beautiful ship up close and in detail in Andor.

Plus, it was a pretty memorable scene too!

It seems like nobody involved in the making of the Original Trilogy has spoken up about George Lucas’ oppression of the unaltered theatrical version of the OT.

Spielberg talks his ET editing regret

I should have never messed with the archives of my own work, and I don’t recommend anyone do that. All our movies are a kind of a signpost of where we were when we made them, what the world was like, and what the world was receiving when we got those stories out there. So I really regret having that out there.

Someone make sure he talks to George about this…

Is there a thread on here that lists other film directors, film historians and critics’ similar thoughts? Or on altering movies in general, years after release, or not preserving the original versions of films?

I have looked, and searched for one on here, but have not managed to find such a thread.

Thanks for that. I’m sort of along the same lines. I did find his overpowered nature quite jarring at the time, but that was the same as many games of that time, like you say. Plus, it does a minor thing compared to now, especially with even modern Force abilities like Force Heal not even being needed to recover lightsaber wounds [Inquisitors being impaled in Kenobi for example, and then appear to be fine just days later (or even hours later)]!

What feels most Star Wars
Time

To me it is everything before 1997. All the films, the novels, the Sourcebook. And then selected content like the video games on consoles and PC, Rogue One, Solo (Han shoots first!), Andor. Visions too in just being fun Star Wars based stories.

I’d have to include the Sequel Trilogy films in this too. The quality of them, despite the incoherence and lack of planning. TROS fails as a film to me, but does have some moments in them that feel Star Wars. Scenes such as Han and Ben, Leia with Rey and her passing. They are too few to salvage the film, and whilst TFA and TLJ has more Star Wars “moments” in isolation, and I can appreciate TLJ for taking a risk in trying to progress and take risks with the Saga.

The other content, can be fun, interesting, or simply good, but doesn’t feel like Star Wars to me.

Some of it also poor, weightless, cheap, lazy and with a feel of expensive fan-made films or shorts. That’s not to shit on fan-made films either. But you would expect more from highly budgeted, and supposed planned content, from professionals and Lucasfilm.

I am hoping The Acolyte series will have that great Star Wars feel too.

Also some of the younger kids of friends do refer to it as “the Ewok one”. Just wait until they learn about and watch the other two Ewok fims!

Very cute. I wonder how modern day kids would take watching like those 2 Ewok films made nearly 40 years ago. The pacing was a little uneven on both films, and quite slow even back in the 80’s. Probably better for another thread.

I’d love to see “Force Light”, from Tom Veitch’s Tales Of The Jedi comic books seen on screen. Though done in a satisfying way with weight and reason for it. Not some cheap gimmick or throw away ability, like “Force Dash” from TPM!

That would be interesting to see.

“Force Meld” is something I think could be quite cool to be viewed onscreen. Connecting the minds of those around them to create a “network”, to read each other’s thoughts and give instructions accordingly for when in danger, in battle, or simply for covert communication.

It would probably have to come under as yet another ‘rare force ability’ than could only be used, or initiated, by a small number of force wielders.

I like that idea, very cool. And also a believable Force power for that small number of Jedi able to initiate or create that network.

I have to ask, as you’re a fan of The Force Unleashed, what do you think of Starkiller’s Force powers in the TFU game, and also being in-canon, at the time?

Han and Leia's incredibly realistic fight

My guess is that in modern times, with big-budget movies in particular, the film-making process is way more streamlined and compartmentalized across different teams than it used to be. I mean, the big spectacle CGI action scenes are often developed by completely different teams working at different companies with little direct involvement from the director, apart from occasional feedback. Whereas, back in the day, you’d have Lucas or Kershner hanging out overseeing the ILM crew constructing the models and setting up VFX shots. There was still a lot of compartmentalization and outsourcing involved in the production process of course, just much less of it than today.

Those are some good points, and explains a lot how films from this genre can now now have that different feel.

Marooned Biker Scout said:

The Prequels: I can’t remember any scenes either like those from the OT. Likely due to the green screen or blue screen CGI backgrounds, and the focus of direction. Unless it had a thousand ships or vehicles whizzing around in the background (“so dense, so very dense”), there wasn’t much going on like in the OT.

Yeah. The world of the Prequels is either mostly empty or a chaotic mess. The corridors of the Kamino cloning laboratory, or the halls of the Jedi Temple… where is everyone? There’s usually just the characters required for the scene and some digital backgrounds. The world feels surreal and abstract, not a real physical place you could actually visit. Then you have the opposite phenomenon where the background is a million ships or robots shooting at each other.

Yeah, the immersion of the environments is broken somewhat, or feels off.

Contrast that to Andor, real sets, real people, reactions, everyday life on various environments, though notably Ferrix and Aldanhi, It draws us in, grounds us as viewers, we’ve been there, we identify and believe those familiar surroundings. Even when we are shown the lower levels of Coruscant, or the ISB HQ, they have the similar grounding, background extras going about their day.

(Along with some beautiful cinematography, direction and editing, of course.)

Palpatine (terrible grandfather of a nepo baby)
Vader (terrible father of nepo babies)
Padmé (regal nepo baby)
Luke Skywalker (nepo baby)
Princess Leia (nepo baby squared)
Boba Fett (clone nepo baby)
Rey (nepo grand-daughter)
Kylo Ren (angry nepo baby)
Grogu (secret Yoda+Yaddle nepo baby)
Bo Katan (Mando nepo baby)
Threepio (manufactured nepo baby, built by terrible father of nepo babies)

‘Damon Lindelof Says He Was ‘Asked to Leave’ His Star Wars Project’:

https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a43728671/damon-lindelof-star-wars

“I was in more than talks to join the Star Wars universe,” Lindelof says. “I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave.”

Though he doesn’t seem deterred by it:

"“Will I get back in line outside the club and try to get back in again?” Lindelof asks himself in the interview. “Absolutely.” The original Star Wars was the first film the director ever saw in theaters, and he’s still in love with the storytelling. “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again,” he jokes, “or again again try, as Yoda would say.”

I hope he does get the chance to do something with Star Wars, though no more “mystery boxes”.

Well, it took me a little more than two months, but this thread directly lead to my storyboard-based reconstruction: https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Reconstructing-the-end-of-ROTJ-with-Storyboards/id/92274

Both this thread and yours are truly fascinating to me. Thank you. I’m going to go read my old Storyboards book for the Original Trilogy right now.

Do you think we’ll find more about on “Black Friday” and the missing Storyboards? I hope we’ll see some interviews, articles and documentaries on this for the 40th anniversary of Return Of The Jedi, as has been done on the official website for Star Wars and Empire for their 40th anniversaries.

I have found more storyboards that aren’t on the site yet, just haven’t had the time to update it. It really does seem like it was a combination of

  • The early versions of shots weren’t good enough (in Lucas’s judgment, and we ought to trust him on that)
  • The movie had to be done by a certain date
  • Everyone was entirely overworked and burning out just trying to get something done before the deadline
  • Thus, some things had to be cut

and hey, maybe it really was too long too

Wow. I look forward to seeing those updates.

I hope someday we’ll see some talented editors or fans put together a short video based on those scenes lost or cut for Black Friday, and other scenes for Jedi: either animated or model based. It’d be cool to see.

I love the “what could have been” aspects for Jedi, the deleted scenes we know about, and even the different fan edits of ROTJ since. I’m really looking forward to adywan’s ROTJ:Revisited to see what magic he comes up with again.

I was also hoping for something, anything, like that at the 2023 Celebration Panels, but it wasn’t to be: we didn’t get anybody who actually worked on Jedi behind the scenes on the Panels.

Show us the Death Star II construction
Time

Those are some well made and logical points you make, Channel72. I’m sold!

One thing that would require some explaining is the sheer volume of material needed: we know that DSI required a mass effort, and other Imperial projects shelved in favour of building that, so this much larger DSII would require even more effort, slave or prisoner workforces, mining for components and so on.

On the other hand, there is no Imperial Senate around to placate and swerve around, like there was for DSI. Nobody in the way asking questions or or investigating just why there are so many prisoners or slaves working on certain projects for this. Or why resources and efforts from planets and systems across the galaxy are being diverted into “black holes” or classified projects.

I agree with Servii above, in that the more we have seen on DSI, the more abrupt it feels DSII was built in comparison.

I’d love to see something along those explained, in a short feature or animated anthology episode; something like in “Tales Of The Jedi” if that series is going to expand beyond doing Ahsoka-themed and Dooku-backstory episodes.

Or even in a one-off Disney+ film on the building of DSII, with the Bothans, having the Rebels and Imperial POVs, the Emperor’s plan being implemented by his underlings, along with his deception that the superlaser wasn’t ready and so on.

Yeah, it’s still Jedi to me. The OT films are the only ones I abbreviate out loud like that. The other films I usually just call by their episode numbers.

Same here. “Jedi” for me all the way.

“Ep 8” for The Last Jedi.

Thinking about it, for all the Prequel and Sequel films I say their “Ep #” in actual conversations. And “Star Wars”, “Empire” and “Jedi” for the ORiginal Trilogy. Huh.
